MSFT won't Sasser-patch bootleg Windows
MSFT won't Sasser-patch bootleg Windows
05/07/2004 03:35 AMMicrosoft's anti-Sasser-worm patch can't be applied to copies of
Windows with serial numbers associated with bootleg or fake copies.
It's an interesting dilemma for MSFT: the more unpatched copies of
Windows (whether legit or not) the worm infects, the worse it becomes
for
all unpatched users, including those who paid their
license fees. It's like denying smallpox vaccinations to known crooks,
then having to pay the social cost of the smallpox outbreak that
infects everyone who hasn't had a shot (including honest cits).

Did The Sasser Informer Play A Part In
Creating Sasser?
05/18/2004 03:04 PMFor all the hype about how Microsoft's bounty
helped to catch
the accused writer of the Sasser worm, the police are apparently
now investigating
whether or not the informant helped create the worm himself. This
opens up a whole new set of questions about bounties. People who help
each other create worms and viruses can turn around and backstab their
partners for the bounty (and, of course, then be accused back by those
they fingered).

Delayed patch ends Microsoft's
patch-free month early
12/11/2003 12:02 PMA glitch in Microsoft's Windows Update automated patching service
caused a security fix that was released last month to be delivered to
computer users on Tuesday, the same day Microsoft proclaimed December
would be a patch-free month. The software patch fixes a serious
vulnerability in a set of Web site management tools called FrontPage
Server Extensions, which are part of Microsoft's Windows 2000, Windows
XP and Office XP software, according to Microsoft Security Bulletin
MS03-051 released Nov. 11. Exploiting the flaw could allow an attacker
to gain control over a user's PC, Microsoft said.

06/25/2004 08:37 AMPERSISTENT RUMOURS reach our ears that when Microsoft finally does
release Windows 64 XP, it may only be available in versions for
original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). If these rumours turn out to
be true, this would effectively deal a blow to smaller system
integrators and to enthusiasts seeking to build Intel or AMD 64 based
systems for themselves.
