Having just talked about the new Vaio laptops, I
somehow feel obligated to mention the new Vaio desktops. But are they
really new? No.
On the very high end of things is the Vaio type R desktop, with a
3.8 GHz CPU, two 250GB hard drives (intertwined by RAID 0,
nonetheless), and 1GB of RAM. It also includes a 20" LCD, which when
you think about the 460,000 yen price tag (about $4,400 USD), is
entirely understandable.
Working our way down the ranks, through the two other type R
models, three type HX models, three type V models, and two type M
models, we finally reach the bottom of the pack — the Vaio type
M "VGC-M31B/W" has a 15.4" screen, 2.7 GHz CPU, 256MB of RAM, and
integrated video (good 'ol SiS), and costs around 160,000 yen (about
$1,538 USD).

Intel desktop price cuts slated for next
week
08/18/2004 04:26 PMThe Inquirer is reporting that the Intel plans on slashing prices for
its desktop processors. This price cut is expected to be announced by
Intel on August 22nd. It should also be noted that AMD will most
likely announce a similar price drop(as they often do). If, however,
they dont, it would be a go indicator that AMD may be in the position
to command a bit of a premium for its products.
Intel will issue price cuts on almost all of its processors, such as
the LGA 775 and 478 pin Prescott’s, and its Celeron/Celeron
"D" processors. In most cases, this price cut will be
pretty substantial. In quantities of 1,000, you can get Intel's 560
processors for $417 compared to the old price of $637. On the Celeron
front, price drops won't be as big as Prescott’s, but still a decent
price drop of $8, on average.
These price drops are right on time for one of the busiest parts of
the computer sales calendar (back to school). This is the time of the
year that all computer companies look forward to - be it Intel, AMD,
Dell, or Apple.
