How colds work

How colds work

How colds work 05/04/2004 05:14 AM

Someone has given me a vicious cold. My third this year. I thought that quitting smoking meant fewer colds, not more. Bugger. Anyway, here's how colds work:

The nose contains shelf-like structures called turbinates, which help trap particles entering the nasal passages. Material deposited in the nose is transported by ciliary action to the back of the throat in 10-15 minutes. Cold viruses are believed to be carried to the back of the throat where they are deposited in the area of the adenoid. The adenoid is a lymph gland structure that contains cells to which cold viruses attach.

One of the downsides to the fact that people can work whenever they want is that it's sometimes hard for people to stop working. According to a study done in Europe, many overly stressed out workers are asking their bosses to cut their hours and salary just to gain back some control over their lives. Meanwhile, many bosses in IT are increasingly worried that their staff is going to burn out. Of course, a lot of that could be solved if companies hired more people, but they still seem hesitant to do so.

EFF is hiring! EFF is the best employer I've ever had -- including myself, when I was self-employed, and the company I helped found -- and it's hiring a new Membership Coordinator: the person in charge of satisfying current members and increasing membership. If this sounds like you, apply!
The Membership Coordinator reports to the Director of Development and is a key part of EFF's fundraising team. The MC is responsible for managing all contact with EFF's 12,000+ members, helping to develop strategies to grow the membership, processing all donations to EFF, mailing regular "thank-yous"and renewal notices to donors, ensuring an efficient donation system, managing the donation pages of the website, and responding to any issues donors may have. The MC also manages all aspects of EFF's online shop, including order fulfillment. Additional responsibilities include various marketing projects, including oversight of the design and printing of t-shirts, hats, stickers, brochures, and other materials. The MC also attends a number of commercial conferences each year, managing the EFF booth presence and speaking informally with conference attendees.

They Work For You

They Work For You 06/06/2004 03:53 PM

Today is/was (you never can tell with these wretched time zone differences) NotCon 2004, London's premiere low-cost, informal, one-day technology conference. Friday's MiniNTK promised the unveiling of a new project from the people behind FaxYourMP and PublicWhip and sure enough, here it is: TheyWorkForYou.com.

TheyWorkForYou.com is the finest example of a political hack I've ever seen. It's basically an ultra-user-friendly front-end to the Hansard public record of all speeches and debates in the houses of commons, with each MP getting their own page complete with a summary of their recent performance and member's interests and a list of their recently recorded parliamentary appearances.

The community features are pretty impressive as well: you can add comments to any speech made in any debate, and there's also a user-populated glossary which is automatically linked in to the speech transcripts.

But with all that, the most useful feature is probably the most subtle: you can subscribe to an RSS feed of your MP's appearances, meaning you can keep track of everything they say on your behalf. It's simple, powerful and a perfect example of the political hacker ethic at work.

We can work it out

We can work it out 09/24/2004 05:45 PM

BBC commentator Bill Thompson, riffing on the ongoing dispute between Apple Computer and Apple Corps (the Beatles), has a suggestion:

In the days they set up Apple Corps they were radical hippies who challenged the establishment in many ways.

Wouldn't it be nice if they did the same thing now, and made the music available without rights management systems, under a non-commercial Creative Commons license that let others reuse their songs?

It would be a wonderful gesture to the future, recognising that the Fab Four only succeeded because they were inspired by those who came before, taking riffs and musical forms from others.

Maybe it'll never happen with the Beatles. However, today's radical musicians may wish to consider the message that wraps up Justin Cone's Building on the Past before selling out:

Creativity always builds on the past.
And you're building the past right now.
Share now.

How Finns work

How Finns work 01/16/2004 11:03 AM
I guess this tells something about the nature of Finns:

I was up uncharacteristically early this morning, and waiting for a tram with a bunch of other random people. The tram comes, and the driver can be clearly seen waving around, as if she had flies in her driving compartment - or as if she was simply mad. This is slightly worrying.

The tram stops, and the doors take a while to open. The driver looks at us and says "This tram will turn."

People stare at her, uncomprehending.

"This tram will TURN!" she says, sounding a bit angry this time. "There's another tram right behind us", she continues.

Nobody asks the obvious question "where will the tram turn and why there are then people in it and what the fuck do you mean by the whole thing anyway, lady", and everybody steps politely back and lets the tram go. Apparently a tram which turns is a very bad thing, and you are not to board one.

Comes the next tram, and people hop onto it. This tram follows the previous one very carefully for many minutes, until it turns out that the first one does not actually turn anywhere, but it goes straight from a crossing that it was supposed to take a right turn at. Regardless, I could've taken either route - both got me very close to where I was going anyway...

This is so highly confusing at 8 am.

Games In Ads Still Work

Games In Ads Still Work 11/06/2003 05:21 AM
Back in 1996 or 1997 when banner ads were first becoming popular online, I (like so many folks) quickly learned to ignore them. Then, one day, I came across the banner ad that got me hooked. I was ashamed to admit it, but there was a banner ad from HP for a product called the mopier (yes, I still remember), and within the banner ad, you could play the game pong. Yes, it's a very simple game, and there were probably other places online I could have found pong, but I got hooked for at least half an hour playing pong in a banner ad. Afterwards, I was a little ashamed, but later spent time trying to search out the same ad. The HP mopier product never went anywhere, but that ad has stayed in my head ever since. Of course, since then, there have been plenty of other ads that have involved games, and I've learned to ignore all of them as well. However, I'm reminded of that story in reading this article from an editor at PC Mag who basically went through an identical game-in-ad playing experience recently - but in a pop up ad. It seems that no matter how much you dislike ads, sometimes you just can't ignore a little game.

Work and Camp

Work and Camp 08/14/2004 10:52 PM

I have been really busy with a client for the past few days, trying to get a good handle around a misbehaving web service benchmark.  Oracle JDBC drivers played a key role by hanging instead of complaining.  My opinion of Axis, an open source web service toolkit,  took a dive as well.  It's a complicated, buggy, and slow tool that makes you want to chuck it aside as soon as you use it.  Unfortunately, it's what most people are using on the Java side these days.

Thankfully, I'll be camping at Tahoe again starting this Sunday.  But before that, I got a ton of work to do Saturday.  Decent weekends are rare for me.  When I was young, I dedicated my weekends to my singles life, dating and clubing.  These days, I am working for either myself or my clients every weekend.

If I am not working on weekends, it's usually because I am recovering from too much work during the weekdays.  My method of recovery is to read or watch two three books or movies in a single sitting.  Of course, this leaves little room for quality family time so I am glad for the occasional camping.

So the work begins....

So the work begins.... 09/06/2004 03:35 AM

We did an IRC chat last night (my time) for the OpenMedia project.

Here's the beginnings of those efforts - An XSPF-based schema for OpenMedia playlists from Lucas Gonze.

Now I gotta go figure out what's XSPF (something tells me it has something to do with Kevin Marks) and how this works with all the OTHER playlist formats out there.

There's nothing I hate more - than redeundant work, overlapping cofusions and tech politics in general. That seems to take up most of my time.

Like yet another digital ID format - from Atom.

Ugh.

Anyway - thanks to Lucas for this - it's great getting this effort started. Maybe we should call it ourMedia.org instead.

What do you think?

We couldn't really nail down the other domain.
