Gawker Launches Lifehacker, Gridskipper

Gawker Launches Lifehacker, Gridskipper 02/01/2005 09:09 PM

These are the things I hate: Powerbooks that blow up on the same day that new models come out. Windows' tantalizing burst of speed compared to my Mac, punctuated by lock-ups every few seconds. The Killers. Firefox 1.0 being less stable than Firefox 0.8. A lack of proper backups.

Here are the things I love: Ordering replacement hard drives that should make my Powerbook considerably faster. Enjoying a song from The Killers while still hating them. Launching new blogs on Gawker. Launching new blogs about using technology to make life easier and seedy concentrated travel experiences.

Sorry about the radio silence, internet friends. I've got a semblance of a workflow restablished and am brewing another pot. Looks like we've got a long afternoon ahead of us.

SITE
04/06/2005 03:21 PM

1sploid.jpgWe've launched a new site, called Sploid. Edited by Choire "Boo Boo Bear Prime" Sicha, Henry "Once Intern, Now Man" Seltzer, and Ken "Yeah, I Actually Don't Know This Guy" Layne, Sploid is like a Gawker blog but even lazier, as up-to-the-second news headlines are snarkily regurgitated in easy-to-read font sizes and just a dabbling of that always-original, never-a-Daily Show-knockoff Gawker-brand humor. And in just in case you're afraid we pinko New York liberals skew the noise to our gay/jew agenda, publisher Nick Denton reminds you that our 'political line' is "anarcho-capitalist," the same bullshit phraseology he uses to explain our pay scale.

But really, I love it already, so go give them a new first day traffic spike they'll look at wistfully for months to come.

OMG IT'S THE SITE [Sploid]

Gawker jumps the snark

Gawker jumps the snark 11/03/2003 12:17 PM
Dude, like, Gawker is OVER. Not shut down, I mean, like, so OVER. As in, when New York magazine publishes a feature which includes phrases like "Gawker Explosion," "Gawker Effect," and "Gawker-fed hotness" about your site, all your je ne sais blog vanishes like a broken RSS feed in the night. (Note to God: please, please, please, don't let them ever pen so much as a word about BoingBoing, or I'll have to go back to spamming friends with lists of art-porn urls. Oh wait, I still do that! OMG! LOL!).

Still, Choire has teh funny. And Elizabeth Spiers is somehow managing to stave off the ravages of obscurity despite having turned down Jason Calacanis' infamously unrefusable offer. As for Nick Denton, the blogtrepreneur is said to be launching new sites, very soon -- the first of which is Fleshbot, a hot pink orb devoted to all things porny. Link to NY Magazine hand job story.

On Wonkette and the rest of Gawker
media...

On Wonkette and the rest of Gawker
media...
01/24/2004 01:43 PM

So Nick Denton's Gawker media has released its latest offspring into the world, and so far (particularly after the enormous success of fleshbot) it doesn't look like much of a contender. Wonkette has been described as Gawker for DC (by Glenn Reynolds, no less), but so far she's evidenced little of the ready wit and weblog-savvy of that rather superior organ's array of editorial talent. Wonkette's Ana Marie Cox writes like a weblog-naif - she's overly fascinated by the speed of the publishing and the novelty of not having an editor (and too involved in the immediacy of her voice over the quality of the material she's referencing) to make the site a really compelling read. I've no doubt all this will change of course - the novelty of writing for a weblog can fade over time. But in the meantime: For God's sake, calm down before you do yourself a mischief!

Gawker media is in my mind a lot at the moment, for a whole range of reasons. First and foremost, I've got a paper that I should be writing for an upcoming conference on e-publishing at the Lo ndon Book Fair. Specifically, I've been thinking about writing about Nick's model of nanopublishing and the way in which these small ventures can create grass-roots, highly-targetted brands - brands which could be floated off into larger ventures, used as branded chunks (syndicated columns perhaps) within larger publications or simply used to colonise the brain-space of people who feel disenfranchised by the large and inhuman face of large-scale media. In particular I want to talk about that alternative model of online publishing - in which large teams of individuals are brought in to run online presences / support sites for commercial magazines or other large media presences at tremendous expense - expense which evidently might simply not be necessary.

But of course the problem with Nick's nano-publishing model (and he problem with my proposed paean to it) is that it doesn't really seem to make anyone that much money and that perhaps as a direct consequence, no one else seems to want to do it. I mean, short of business ignorance (which we shouldn't dismiss as a likely proposition) what other reasons could there be for the lack of competition to Gawker Media? I mean, it's established a model that's far from hard to replicate if you have a little money lying around and a certain amount of savvy. And it's even generated a core concept (local savvy correspondents filtering and condensing the regional media down to thick paste that is as much about myth-making the place as it is purporting to give back-stage access into what's really going on) that's eminently replicable to every decent-sized on the planet. I mean, we can all imagine a London equivalent, a Tokyo equivalent or a Sydney equivalent - we can all see the possibilities in a version of this model for Rome, Paris, Edinburgh and Barcelona. Which leads me to wonder - where are they?

I have my theories, of course. Do you have any?

adirtyshame.jpg imageOh hey, sister site Defamer (the one with lots of pictures of girls' boobs, but with clothes on) has launched one of those special advertising section blog things, except this time it's cool (to me), because it's promoting John Waters' new movie "A Dirty Shame." What does that have to do with gadgets? You know, probably nothing, but if you can't shill your buddies' work on your weblog where can you do it?

Besides, do you really want me to make a connection between John Waters and gadgets? I can't even begin to think of the hate mail I'd get for that. Also, why didn't we get a launch party with the cast? This selling out shit is a rip off.
