Charleston Coast-Guard Veterans Keep
Troubled Computers Afloat
01/07/2005 04:14 AM
For the residents and businesses in Charleston and its neighboring communities in South Carolina, getting a computer repaired used to be a daunting task. First they had to find a local repair shop, then they had to disassemble their entire computer system, lug its many bulky components to their car, and drive to the store. And to make matters worse, those small repair shops often took several days to fix a PC, which caused tremendous headaches—especially for small or home-based businesses that rely on computers to keep their operations afloat. Fortunately this type of scenario is a thing of the past, thanks to high-tech entrepreneurs Ron Roddam and Elizabeth Lasicki who recently launched two new franchises with Geeks On Call®, the nation’s premier provider of on-site computer support. Roddam and Lasicki’s team of mobile computer professionals zips throughout Charleston and its neighboring communities in their trademark blue Chrysler PT Cruisers (affectionately dubbed “PC Cruisers™”) to deliver essential computer services including troubleshooting, repairs, upgrades, wired/wireless networking, one-on-one training, and custom-built PCs. Transatlantic Rowboat

Transatlantic Rowboat 06/08/2004 01:41 PM

rowboat2.jpg imageIf you're going to row across the Atlantic Ocean, you've earned the right to get a little extravagant with your rowboat, I say. French adventuress Anne Quemere has made it across the pond once before, but if she completes her Cape Cod to Brittany, France tour this time she'll be the first woman to row across the Atlantic in both directions. Her 22-foot rowboat, Le Connetable, weighs about 1,300 pounds and will be packed to the gills with enough food, water, and equipment to sustain Quemere during her three month journey. In addition to built-in GPS, Le Connetable will have an Argos Beacon to report her position by satellite (sort of reverse-GPS) or emit a distress call, if necessary, as well as a desalinator for converting the fishy salt water into fishy, drinkable fresh water. Oh, and she'll carry an Iridium sat phone for talking to her friends about her day.

Xeni Jardin: Snipped from the site:
" Rowboat Vets for Truth is here to share the real story, to correct the misleading use of our images, against our will, in paintings, woodcuts and pamphlets across the colonies.

The Rowboat Vets for Truth will counter the outrageous claims made by Mr. Washington and the liberal printing presses in Boston and Philadelphia.

We speak from personal experience - our group includes men who served beside Washington in combat against unarmed Germans on Christmas night, 1776. Though we come from different backgrounds, shoe menders, haberdashers, stable boys, candle holders to the wealthy. etc., and hold varying political opinions, we agree on one thing: George Washington lacks the potential to lead."

AirWave Wireless's tool for managing large-scale access point deployments has signed 10 major universities: A little indulgence here, but my alma mater (Yale) and my hometown university (University of Oregon) are both on the list of 10 universities that AirWave will provide their management platform to. AirWave's approach allows heterogeneous enterprise APs from many major manufacturers to be used on a single network and managed with a single interface. If you're all Cisco or all Proxim, you might choose their expensive, exclusive management consoles. Or, you can opt for AirWave and have more flexibility about mixing and matching equipment that can be monitored and configured centrally. A tool like this helps commoditize enterprise hardware by allowing a level playing field for equipment from many vendors--including those that don't offer a central management system....
