Did The Sasser Informer Play A Part In
Creating Sasser?
05/18/2004 03:04 PMFor all the hype about how Microsoft's bounty
helped to catch
the accused writer of the Sasser worm, the police are apparently
now investigating
whether or not the informant helped create the worm himself. This
opens up a whole new set of questions about bounties. People who help
each other create worms and viruses can turn around and backstab their
partners for the bounty (and, of course, then be accused back by those
they fingered).

Linksys says faster..FASTER!
Linksys says faster..FASTER!
01/04/2005 08:10 PMOver at CES, Linksys will be announcing a new series of 802.11g
products that integrate SRX, a new speed boosting feature.
Currently, 802.11g networks have a range of between 120 and 160 feet
and a transfer at 54mbps.
Linksys claims that the SRX enabled 802.11g products can provide 3
times the range (450 feet) and is 8 times faster (i.e. nearly USB 2
speed wireless).
It's completely compatible with other 802.11g and 802.11b networks.
The wireless router is expected to sell for $199 and each card around
$129 and should be available at stores shortly.

"I learned from Bill Bumgarner that the iTunes Music Store now has

WebLog]
This is the kind of thing I've been waiting for from Apple. They've
got a good community built up around iTunes, but they've done a poor
job of connecting and exposing it. I'll have to play around with this
to see what it really means, but it would be great if I could find
iTunes users with similar tastes in music and then subscribe to their
feeds.
On a side note, here's yet another reason for full RSS feeds. I
can't get to the More Like This site right now, which means I can't
read the rest of the post OR get to the link. Incredibly
frustrating.

"I can understand a place like a restaurant asking mobile

quite understand...?" [JD on

rf City Libraries Gets Tough on Mobiles
"The new regulation,
which comes into force from 15 September, means that if a phone rings,
or if anyone is caught talking or texting, then they will face a stern
warning. After the first ticking-off, though, library vistors can
expect to receive fines of $250, $500 and $1,000 for repeated
offences." [The Register
-- in the U.K.!!!]
- Use a
Cell Phone in a Library, Pay $1,000
"City leaders of Huntington
Beach California adopted an ordinance, which takes effect September
15, that bans all cell phone use in libraries, including talking, text
messaging and ringing tones of any kind, reports The Associated Press." [textually.org]
And those links are just for starters (just wait until it hits Slashdot!). I feel bad for the
Library because this seems to be mandated by the City (was it
requested?), but can you imagine what teenagers must think of them for
this? How many young librarians do you think will read that story and
still want to work there?
I'm the first person to be annoyed by people talking on cell phones
and the ringers, but there are far better compromises than this. After
all, the press from the first $1,000 fine is not going to go well, and
either it will be dismissed (removing the bite from the bark) or the
Library will come out smelling quite badly. It would be far smarter to
have a designated area for cell phone use, and it's ridiculous to ban
text messaging as long as alerts are silent.
Instead, the Library is becoming the butt of jokes online. Do you
think they know what's going on their permanent record?

05/18/2004 04:25 PMThe wider use of fingerprint scanning technology in recent years has
made it easier than ever for law enforcement officials to share
information about criminals and quickly compare a suspect's
fingerprint image with millions of similar imprints, according to a
January report from the U.S. General Accounting Office. But it can
still take small police departments that can't afford the electronic
equipment more than five months to mail batches of fingerprint cards
to state repositories, the report said.
