Falling Spiders

Falling Spiders

Falling Spiders 05/04/2004 02:30 AM

So I'm laying in bed while talking on the phone and I notice a spider walking on the ceiling several feet above my face. That of course got me wondering (or maybe worrying?) if the spider would fall on my face during the night. Not being a fan of spiders, that's a mildly disturbing thought. But then I realized that spiders are really good at not falling. In fact, I've only seen spiders fall in very specific circumstances. When one...

The truth about camel spiders

The truth about camel spiders 04/09/2004 04:04 PM
camel_spiderHere's the myth about camel spiders, the monsters of the Iraqi desert.
"Supposedly they leap onto the backs of camels and suck out the blood. I've been told that a couple of these things can kill a full grown camel."
Link

"Here's the lowdown on camel spiders, which aren't spiders at all:

In reality, camel spiders aren't some mysterious Arabian creature -- we have them in the United States and in Mexico, where they are called matevenados. They are slightly smaller than the human hand, and while they do run quickly, their top speed is 10 miles per hour, not 25. But they also make no noise, they excrete no venom, and although they can be voracious nocturnal predators, they don't eat camels. They eat delicious crickets and pillbugs, and sometimes scorpions."

Robots, a.k.a. spiders or Web crawlers are used to feed data to a user, such as Google. Most robots are useful, but some, such as EmailSiphon and Cherry Picker are spambots. Here, you'll learn what robots do and how to gain control over them. By Lee Underwood. 0824

The Sky is Not Falling

The Sky is Not Falling 05/15/2004 11:13 AM
Now that everyone seems to be pissing and moaning about the licensing fees for MovableType 3.0 (or migrating to WordPress), I see that Mena has posted a clarification of sorts. Not only that, they've made a few adjustments to their plans based on all the feedback they've received. (Gee, just maybe they're not evil after all?) As Brad notes, their definition of weblog for licensing purposes is different than the definition of weblog in MovableType. That seems to have been...

Bits keep falling from the sky

Bits keep falling from the sky 04/26/2004 07:05 PM
I've been fooling around with BitTorrent lately. Nothing big, just fiddling to see how it all works and playing around a bit. (Yeah, OK, I admit it--I've been snagging manga scanslations off the shub-internet :) Definitely a cool idea, though the reference implementation lacks some things that'd make it otherwise handy. Things like a global rate limit and client cap, handy for those of us with full-time internet connections that don't mind being seeds for a directory full 'o stuff, but don't have that much bandwidth on hand. (I don't at all mind letting a torrent client run for a...

Like crap, falling from the sky

Like crap, falling from the sky 01/11/2004 07:04 PM
Well, it's officially happened. Someone wrote an automated comment spammer for Movable Type. As I type this, I'm watching repeated netstat show port 80 connections, and seeing the "MT-Blacklist comment denial" messages show up in the log. (36 so far) After 37 of the damn things actually made it through (some while I was in the midst of de-spamming things). Whups, make that 40 of the damn things. A few more just slipped through. And even more on the logs, and I'm not going to bother counting. (Okay, I did. 70 were blocked, 38 made it through (I mis-counted) in...

Flakes are falling

Flakes are falling 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

If you happen across a giant swath of dry skin on the streets of NYC in the next few days, it's probably mine. After conscientiously applying SPF 30 multiple times a day in Anguilla and suffering only a bit of sunburn on my face, I am now leaving an epidermal trail throughout Manhattan. I blame the recent snow and excessive work schedule for causing my tan to flee.

falling leaves in my mind . . .

falling leaves in my mind . . . 06/14/2004 09:20 PM
Everyone else in the family had gone to sleep, and it was past midnight. I just wasn't able to sleep, so I sat on the couch and tried to read . . . but I couldn't focus. In the back of my mind, I knew that I was avoiding the real reason that I haven't been interested in weblogging, so I put down my book, and faced it. I turned off the light, opened the window over my head, and sat there, in the green glow of my ambient orb, and listened to the crickets in my back yard. I let my mind drift, and the answer came to me.
