Microsoft Acquires Giant, Plans Antispyware Release: Giant's site has essentially been replaced by a big press release. I didn't use any of their products, but they included Spam Inspector, which I hear was quite good. I wonder how many of Bill's four million emails a day it could head off?

Microsoft today announced its acquisition of New York–based Giant Company Software Inc.[...]

Microsoft will use the acquisition to create an antispyware solution for users of Windows 2000 and later. Key personnel from Giant will join Microsoft to make this possible. A beta release of the as-yet-unnamed product is planned within one month.

More information in this CNN article, including information on Microsoft's plans to charge for the product.

The sleeping giant

The sleeping giant 02/05/2005 09:50 PM

Man, I didn't know that my little late night blurb written mostly to myself would spark such a reaction. I guess I woke a sleeping giant or something. Dave is annoyed, Tom blames it on tools, and Andre wants more flexibility.

The funniest thing is I kind of called for this to grow last summer, and I never really thought about how it affects end users. I uploaded a gallery of 20 photos or so to flickr a while back and a couple people said the feed was overrun with the shots, so much so that they wanted a way to remove them somehow.

For the last few years, I've had a site filled with stuff that I recently wiped in the hopes of starting over. Ideally, I'd like to get something close to Leonard's site, where all my feeds for separate services can live on one page, but there can still be a place to write longer text pieces like this one that dominate the space. I always envisioned One Feed To Rule Them All containing the parts from every sub-section, but after reading stuff like Dave wrote, maybe I'll default to the text blog feed, with other feeds sepate and one megafeed that you could subscribe to, but that tools wouldn't default to picking up.

Giant Easter Egg

Giant Easter Egg 04/09/2004 04:08 PM
This giant Ukrainian Easter Egg (pysanka) was built in 1975 in Vegreville, Canada by (then) Univ. Utah Computer Science Professor Ronald Resch. Interesting egg factoids can be found here--including that it swivels like a weather vane. Vegreville has an annual festival. More images of egg here. The Vegreville Pysanka was the first physical structure completely designed with computer-aided geometric modeling software. There is a good description here of the complex geometry involved. It's based on a technique (PDF) he developed and patented for folding a flat material (i.e. sheet metal) into flexible surfaces. Ronald Resch has had an interesting career.

NYC Plans Giant Safety Net

NYC Plans Giant Safety Net 06/18/2004 11:54 PM
Computerworld reports that New York City will build a wireless network to supports 10,000s of public-safety users at speeds of up 70 mph: Bids are expected next month. They'll start with a three-month pilot project to test with multiple bidders, and then award a five-year contract with the potential for two five-year renewals. The bid's spec apparently calls for two Mbps access and simultaneous streaming for 1,000s of users. The first phase would support about 5,000 fire, police, and emergency medical personnel. The full cost could be $500 million to $1 billion, but the city won't confirm it. Mesh architecture is practically a necessity, the article quotes experts as saying. Tropos says they could deploy such a network with 600 of their access points in the 2.4 GHz band. More would be needed to use the 4.9 GHz public-safety band. Lucent suggests that EvDo running at 2.4 Mbps in the 1.9 GHz band would be an option as well....

The best part, of course, is that it's fully functional. G4 includes some great instructions on how to go about making your own utterly useless, incredibly difficult to store NES controller, complete with wiring diagrams and lots of pictures. Build your own and do Rick Moranis proud.

ladybug_player_3.jpg imageFirst of all, there's nothing wrong with a company named 'Giant Ox,' especially when they make a cute little flash-based MP3 player that looks like a ladybug. It's only available in sizes up to 256MB, has a limited 6-hour battery life, and only has two buttons (according to DAPreview), but I think all can be forgiven. It looks a lot like the Beetle USB drive—in fact, I'm 99% sure it's the same product with MP3 capabilites added in.

Recently, a parent donated several of the beasties to a Wisconsin school. The US Department of Agriculture was called in after teachers learned that their latest classroom pets were illegal aliens. Link

Announcements from Gentle Giant 02/13/2004 06:36 PM
Updates to the Gentle Giant website today included a funky line of two to three inch tall Star Wars "Bust-Ups". Photos of series one are on the site and include Han as above, plus Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, Yoda, and C-3PO, though he is not shown. Another line of 1/6 scale collectibles called the Star Wars Armory Collection also premieres on the site. Shown is an X-Wing pilot helmet and listed is a TIE Figher Pilot helmet. Looks like this is set to replace the cool Riddell helmet line.
