Microsoft, Spend Your Money!
Microsoft, Spend Your Money!
06/03/2004 12:10 PMI've been thinking about the Sasser worm, which sneaks into your
system and at a minimum ruins the machine's performance—if you have
any left by now, since the patch to stop the worm also ruins the
performance. Such worms are the worst, since they literally "worm"
around the Internet looking for open ports on any machine connected to
the Net. Certain ports have weird vulnerabilities, for reasons only
Microsoft can understand. A worm jumps into the port, then executes
itself inside the OS, which seems eager to oblige. Next thing you
know, your machine is screwed up.

Microsoft security spend greater than
the Star Wars missile system
05/27/2004 03:41 PMMicrosoft has spent more on securing its software than was spent on
the Star Wars missile project, the company's head of security has told
conference guests. An unfortunate analogy for Iain Mulholland to use
since the project was a complete failure and little more than the
private obsession of a few top American ego-maniacs.
But, despite - and because of - this Herculean effort, viruses and
worms are going to get worse. They will become more complex, more
vicious and more dangerous because the days of quick and easy exploits
have come to an end, thanks to the software giant's efforts. According
to one expert anyway.
