Roland Piquepaille writes, "Ocean-diving Seagliders built at the University of Washington (UW) just broke endurance records. Two of these Seagliders, which are 1.8 m long and weigh 52 kg, were launched last September between California and Hawaii and reached the island of Kauai after 191 days in a trip of 1,860 miles. Both Seagliders did more than 500 dives down to 1,000 m during their trips. When a Seaglider reaches the surface, where it stays for only five minutes, it determines its position via GPS, uploads its data and downloads its new instructions via satellite. Meanwhile, two other Seagliders are still somewhere in the Labrador Sea for more than 193 days now and have yet to be retrieved." For more details and photos, see Roland's blog entry.

NASA's Spirit rover recently reached it's "Mission Success" point, meeting all the goals that NASA had outlined for the mission. The rover is still doing science and going strong, but the turbo-geeks at JPL marked the occasion with a cool little Quicktime video showing how the rover has done its work over the past 90 days by making a time-compressed sequence of the rover's exploits:

In 90 martian days, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit has performed a remarkable series of drives, digs and scientific investigations at Gusev Crater, Mars. This video documents many of the rover's accomplishments by stringing together images taken throughout the mission by the rover's front hazard-avoidance camera and microscopic imager instrument.

Sped up like this, it's fun to watch the thing sniff around Mars like an excited collie at the dog park.

The hills of Mars yield more tantalizing clues about how water shaped the Red Planet. Tests by NASA's robotic geologist, Spirit, found out this information, while its twin, Opportunity, observed the deep crater it climbed into two months ago.

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said Spirit discovered a swath of bedrock that showed signs of being altered by water. It may yield clues about the planet's primordial atmosphere. Scientist believe the bedrock was thrust up from below the lava-covered surface of the vast Gusev Crater, where Spirit landed Jan. 3 and spent months crossing to arrive at a series of promontories dubbed the Columbia Hills.

For the past week, the rover has conducted a series of tests on a rock nicknamed Clovis, that is perched on a spur about 30 feet above the plain. Both Spirit and Opportunity found ancient evidence of water on Mars earlier in their missions, but new data recorded by Spirit's scientific instruments this week suggests that the life-giving liquid was once more plentiful than they thought.
