Teen Gets Prime Minister's Phone Calls

Teen Gets Prime Minister's Phone Calls 07/30/2004 03:51 PM
Recycling of phone numbers is not a new thing. My home phone, for instance, used to be the phone number for the local social security office, apparently. I get a fairly frequent stream of calls (even if I've had the number for many years already) from people trying to reach social security. Nowadays, the problem tends to come from recycling of mobile phone numbers. There was the well-publicized story of Chris Rock's old mobile phone number going to some woman. In the UK, there are problems with people receiving expensive premium SMS services they never ordered, but which were set up by the previous owner of the same number. Now, in Norway, a 16-year-old girl is receiving phone calls meant for the country's Prime Minister, after he ditched his mobile number, and it was recycled to her. How often do you get to say "sorry, wrong number," to leaders around the world?

Smoking gun

Smoking gun 08/03/2004 04:31 PM
The NY Times reported today on the front page that the information about the planned attack on financial buildings in NY and Newark is 3-4 years old. That is, it's information we may have had even before 9/11.The indications that there will be an attack before the elections does not point to the information about those four buildings. So why is it being trotted out now? I, of course, have my suspicions, almost all of which end with the phrase "grounds for impeachment."...

The Smoking Gun

The Smoking Gun 03/13/2003 10:25 AM
Remember that whole drone "cover-up"? Here's the plane. The prototype of Iraq's smoking gun WMD threat. Constructed of balsa wood and duct tape, it says Allahu Akbar (God is great) on the side. And, well, they were probably half right. While it's not really a gun, it probably does smoke -- it uses lawn-mower-style two-stroke engines. Washington Post story here.

Not Smoking...Again

Not Smoking...Again 03/23/2005 12:34 PM

Starting this morning, I am not smoking.  Instead, I am doing the niccotine lozenge called Commit.  The candy looks like a small alka seltzer tablet and, as expected, tastes chaulky and tingles as it dissolves.  It's less convenient than niccotine gums because I am not suppose to use it within 15 minutes after eating or drinking.  So no more mixing niccotine with coffee or full stomach for me.

I have no idea whether this will work.  Longest smokeless run for me was six months.  We'll see.  Hopefully, lozenge won't bring vivid dreams like patches did.

Please don't wish me luck.  I can't smoke luck.

One gun smoking, the other gun holstered 05/31/2004 08:26 AM
Smoking gun: Time reports on a Pentagon email (from Douglas "Chicken Hawk" Feith) that says that Dick Cheney's office "coordinated" the awarding of a multi-billion dollar contract in Iraq for the company he formerly headed, Halliburton. (Reuters) Holstered gun: The Boston Globe's Wayne Washington reports that Bush no longer mentions the prescription drug bill he rammed through Congress: A Globe survey of Bush's and Vice President Dick Cheney's remarks indicate 22 mentions in December and January, four in February, five in March, one in April, and three in May. The reason seems clear: The Medicare expansion, once viewed as a...

No smoking gun in Iraq

No smoking gun in Iraq 02/01/2005 09:15 PM
In fact, there was no gun at all! In news that I'm sure surprised no one, the US announced the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq -- the justification for our pre-emptive invasion of that country -- ended after two fruitless years. The New York Times opines in its editorial Bulletin: No W.M.D. Found: The search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq may have been one of the greatest nonevents of the early 21st century, right up there with the failure of the world's computers to crash at the end of the last millennium. That Y2K scare at least brought us an updated Internet. Fear of the nonexistent W.M.D. brought us a war. No matter how the Administration spins it, the ends do not justify the means. Lies, scare mongering, and faulty intelligence have no place in a democracy, regardless of whether a democratic Iraq is the ultimate outcome of the war. This tactic has been so successful for President Bush that you can see it being applied once again, now to Social Security and its current 'crisis' (though projections show benefits will be solvent until 2042, see Democrat disputes Social Security 'crisis'). Americans, I beg of you, in the words of Chuck D: Don't believe the hype!

When I stopped smoking

When I stopped smoking 06/14/2004 08:37 AM

On the Sunday before my surgery, I said to Tori -- "You know I haven't decided to stop smoking yet."

Then after the surgery, not sure which day it was (probably Tuesday morning) in the ICU, the surgeon comes to see me, really sharply dressed, with a sharply dressed woman with him (not sure who she was).

The doctor says "You're a computer guy, right?" I said I was. "What's the word you guys use for seeing something?" I asked if he meant visualize. "That's it!" he exclaimed.

"Now I want you to visualize yourself as a smoker." Since I had been trained in meditation, I thought I was about to be deprogrammed. Okay, I'm visualizing.

"You're dead!" he said and started laughing.

What do you mean? I asked. "People like you who keep smoking are usually dead within three years," he explained. Gulp. Somehow, in all the doom and gloom it had never really sunk in that I had almost died. If I had waited another couple of weeks to deal with this, well, I don't even like to think about it.

Anyway, that was the moment. That was when I decided to stop smoking.

Quitting Smoking

Quitting Smoking 07/21/2004 04:53 PM

Dave Winer writes about his experience quitting smoking, and it reminds me of my experience quitting. Many years ago I was a smoker, and it took a couple of tries before I quit successfully.

My first attempt at quitting was doomed to failure. See, I noticed that my cravings were stronger when my friends and I went bar-hopping, so I told myself I'd only smoke when I was drinking. The result? I drank more. Duh.

So I quit cold turkey, and that was well over a decade ago. I've smoked one time since then, about three years ago - not a perfect record, but not bad. The thing that made it easier to quit was that I stopped smoking right after the end of a relationship gone sour. I figured as long as I was giving up one bad habit, I might as well give up smoking at the same time.
