Government Comes Out With Cyberspace
Study -- Seven Years Late
03/31/2005 04:50 PM
People have said, in the past, that internet years are like dog years. Things change so fast that a single year feels more like seven years in a non-internet business. Perhaps the government works on the reverse. Seven years real time is more like one year of operating time. That might explain why the Commerce Department has just now released their "Signposts in Cyberspace" study that they were told to put out in 1998 as part of the Next Generation Internet Research Act. The findings, as you might imagine, seem a bit... out of date. Nothing too ridiculous, but certainly nothing particularly new. And, some of the recommendations, like increasing the number of top level domains available, started happening a few years ago already.

Laugh a little -- barbecuing 03/31/2005 09:41 AM
Definition of Outdoor Barbecuing It’s the only type of cooking a “real” man will do. When a man volunteers to do such cooking, the following chain of events is put into motion: (1) The woman goes to the store. (2) The woman fixes the salad, vegetables, and dessert. (3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils, and takes it to the man, who is…

"Massive misinformation" from Arab news networks such as Al-Jazeera is hampering the US effort in Iraq, Rumsfeld told the troops during his Christmas Eve visit to Mosul: "Everything we do here is harder because of television stations like Al Jazeera and Al Arabiyah." In remarks that were not quoted in the American press, the defense secretary went on to tell the troops, "We don't go out and hire journalists and propagandize and lie and put people on payroll so that they'll say what you want. We just don't do that and they do and that's happening" (which is itself meta-misinformation.) Meanwhile, the Pentagon's multimillion-dollar solution -- the CIA-funded Iraqi news network, Al-Iraqiya (featuring "Iraqi programs that make you laugh, cry, and learn") -- has become "an irrelevant mouthpiece for [coalition] propaganda" according to one of its own former correspondents, veteran news reporter Don North.

David Pescovitz: Dogs, chimps, and rats laugh when they're having fun, according to psychologist Jack Panksepp of Bowling Green State University. Reporting in the journal Scien ce, Panksepp suggests that laughter may be an ancient emotional response older than humans. From BBC News:
Young chimps "play pant" as they mischievously chase and tickle each other.

And when rats play, they make chirps which some scientists associate with positive emotional feelings.

When rats are tickled in a playful way, they become socially bonded to humans and are rapidly conditioned to seek tickles, the US neuroscientist explains in Science.

A man, just back from a trip abroad, went to an incompetent fortune-teller. He asked about his family, and the fortune-teller replied: "Everyone is fine, especially your father." When the man objected that his father had been dead for ten years, the reply came: "You have no clue who your real father is."--that's one of the jokes from The Laughter Lover (Philogelos), an ancient Greek joke book published in the 4th or 5th century AD. The New Yorker commented on it, and other old jokes here,< /a> stating about one of the possible authors: ... there is some scholarly speculation that the Hierocles in question was a fifth-century Alexandrian philosopher of that name who was once publicly flogged in Constantinople for paganism, which, as one classicist has observed, “might have given him a taste for mordant wit.”

Woody Woodpecker laugh-guy is dead 04/24/2004 03:19 AM
Harry Babbit, the voice of Woody Woodpecker's laugh, is dead.
Dubbed "Handsome Harry" by Kyser, Babbitt sang on several hits, including "Three Little Fishies,""On A Slow Boat to China,""(Lights Out) 'Til Reveille,""He Wears a Pair of Silver Wings,""Jingle, Jangle, Jingle" and "The Umbrella Man."

Babbitt's high voice was later used on a solo recording of "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth," for which he included a lisp. He was even responsible for the laugh on "Woody Woodpecker," Kyser's 1948 hit novelty tune.
