Rejoining Netflix

Rejoining Netflix 05/08/2004 11:54 AM
I'm a sucker, I guess. Though my previous experiment to not watch TV for 30 days didn't entirely work, I've been TV free for a couple months now--ever since I moved into the new place. I even sold my Tivo to someone at work. As a result I've had more spare time but have occasionally been looking for some entertainment. No problem. I have a small collection of DVDs to watch. But now I've seen them all and am at...

Netflix RSS feeds?

Netflix RSS feeds? 05/31/2004 10:12 AM

Watching movies in the age of the Internet is way different. Now I can look something up after watching a movie, like for example, did you know how many future stars were in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? It's pretty amazing. Scatman Crothers, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd.

A picture named jack.jpgLast night I went to see Troy with a friend, a perfectly awf ul movie. So much for the theory that I like everything. This one just goes on and on. At one point the camera focuses on an old man who at first looks like he might be Peter O'Toole. Oh good, we'll have some real acting now, I said to myself. But on closer examination, it's just a sad old man, not O'Toole. And the acting continues to be absolutely terrible. The best moments are when Brad Pitt preens, looking beautiful. And that's pretty bad. Anyway on getting home I looked up some reviews, and hold on, that was Peter O'Toole. Holy hanna. He's aged so poorly, and has become a really shitty actor (or is it really shitty direction). Either way, a shame.

It seems that Netflix would be just the kind of network service to give me an RSS feed I can subscribe to, where they would give me interesting articles about movies I just saw, or ones I'm about to see, or movies playing near my house that I would probably like, movies my friends liked, etc etc. They already do a bunch of stuff like that on their site, so why not do it in a feed?

Also, did I write this just so I could include a picture of a youngish Jack Nicholson? I'm not telling.

Netflix + TiVo: Done

Netflix + TiVo: Done 09/07/2004 03:08 AM
Back in January, we had discussed that coming convergence of TV and movies in the video-on-demand space and discussed the somewhat obvious connection of TiVo + Netflix. It appears that the management of both of those companies has figured it out as well, as Newsweek has the "high level sources" rumor mill spinning about TiVo and Netflix teaming up to offer a combined movies-on-demand service. While the details aren't there, this does make a lot of sense for both companies, who each need to differentiate themselves from the growing competition within their space. Both have built up great brand names, and extraordinarily loyal followings, but are now facing strong competition from more established players with huge wallets. A combined solution that let users download movies directly to their TiVo (and, even better, take them "on the go" with TiVoToGo) has tremendous potential and would keep them a step ahead of the competition for now. Still, it remains to be seen exactly how they implement this solution. If it's not done well, it could be damaging to the reputation of both companies, while taking attention away from their existing solutions. It's also unclear if there will be exclusivity in this relationship, or if both players will be able to team up with others as well.

Netflix on the Skids

Netflix on the Skids 03/19/2005 03:23 AM
I just heard a Netflix ad on the Radio that trumpets its ability to ship your selections in one day.  That is true.  It does take one day.  The problem is that the rest of the service has been substantially degraded.  Here's how:
  • It now takes two days for returns to arrive at the Netflix processing center (it used to take one).
  • It takes a day to process your selection at the facility after it recieves the return (it used to be same-day).
  • Saturday processing and shipments have been terminated (they used to provide this).
  • Lost, damaged, or wrong reports take a day to process (it used to send you a replacement or your next selection on the same day you report).
  • Popular movies are almost impossible to get in the first month of their release.  Cult movies are impossible to get.

If I was an investor in Netflix, I would take these actions as a sell signal.  I can't recommend the service to my friends and family anymore.

Green Netflix Envelopes?

Green Netflix Envelopes? 12/19/2004 03:43 PM
What's with the green Netflix envelopes? Hacking Netflix thinks it's because of the Shrek 2 promotion, but it's not just Shrek Green, it's Bright Neon Green. In related news, they have been hideously slow receiving and shipping movies in their Santa Ana distribution center lately. Movies are taking 2-3 days to be received there and ~2 days to get here where it used to be 1-2 days for them to receive it and 1 day for us to get it....

Cancelled Netflix Tonight

Cancelled Netflix Tonight 04/17/2004 11:05 PM

The wife and I were watching Frida, which is quite a good movie, when we decided to cancel our Netflix subscription.

We've been subscribers of Netflix since December of 1999. We bought our first DVD player then when we were living in Dupont, Washington. It was a Sony (still have it and it works great btw) and it included a little Netflix promo card in the box along with the manuals.

We signed up then, and we were paying $15.95 for 4 movies out at any time. We watched a lot of movies back then -- generally one a night, because it was all so new...

And the quality of the service was fantastic. We'd watch a movie, mail it back, and get a new one within 3 days. We'd watch it that night and mail it back that morning.

In 2001, we moved back to Texas, and service was sort of crappy at first. It took 8 or 9 days to get replacement DVDs when we first moved back to Texas, because of the speed of the US Mail, but then, Netflix opened up a distribution center in Texas, and we were back to our 3 day turn around, and all was well.

At some point, Netflix changed their service levels such that our price went up from $15.95 to $19.95. We were happy with the service, and the 'no late fees' peace of mind.

Then, they changed their service to only allow 3 movies out at one time, but they grand-fathered us in, so that we kept our 4 movies out at a time service level for $19.95.

We got in the habit of sometimes watching a lot of movies, and sometimes not watching any for months on end.

Then yesterday, I got an email saying the price was going up to $21.95 for the same service level. I applaud their ability to offer me 4 movies out at a time for $22/month, with a 3 day turn-around. I was happy enough to stay a customer, and then...

We watched a movie last night that was so scratched up that it skipped chapters, and we missed out on a chapter or two and the whole experience was ruined. Eh... no biggy, it's happened before... and I was prepared to write off that one bad disk as a once every six months issue...

But then tonight, Frida skipped a couple of chapters too. Ruined the experience again. And what a good movie too...

So, I logged into my Netflix account and cancelled the service.

Cé la Vie, eh?
