A War for Us, Fought by Them
by William Broyles Jr.
New York Times, 05/04/2004

If children of the political elite were fighting in Iraq, a resolution to the current military imbroglio would soon be found. The author, a Vietnam War veteran, proposes reinstating the draft to ensure the US military gets the support it needs and to relieve pressures on an over-extended volunteer force. Most importantly, he argues, a draft would also prove the ultimate test of Americans' support for the war in Iraq.

William Broyles Jr., the founding editor of Texas Monthly, wrote the screenplay for "Cast Away."

New York Times
A War for Us, Fought by Them

The problem is, I don't see the images of or read about any of the young men and women who, as Dick Cheney and I did, have "other priorities." There are no immediate family members of any of the prime civilian planners of this war serving in it — beginning with President Bush and extending deep into the Defense Department. Only one of the 535 members of Congress, Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota, has a child in the war — and only half a dozen others have sons and daughters in the military.

[...]

This is less a matter of politics than privilege. The Democratic elites have not responded more nobly than have the Republican; it's just that the Democrats' hypocrisy is less acute. Our president's own family illustrates the loss of the sense of responsibility that once went with privilege. In three generations the Bushes have gone from war hero in World War II, to war evader in Vietnam, to none of the extended family showing up in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I remember when I was living in the US with a Green Card (permanent residence card) and I had to sign up for the draft in high school. I thought it was strange that I couldn't vote, drink or buy a gun, but I could be sent to fight a war for the US. It definitely did make me think a lot about war. I think that reinstating the draft in the US is an interesting idea.

Opinion Source is an interesting site run by some of my friends that summarizes op-eds and editorials from around the world. I need to tell them they need better permalinks.

GNU-Darwin: blackout anniversary

GNU-Darwin: blackout anniversary 04/09/2004 04:10 PM
On this day last year we announced our intent to blackout in protest of US aggression in Iraq. All of the major points of our argument have been vindicated, while the Bush administration has spent the past year back-pedaling, whitewashing, and covering up the many lies that they have told. If you are interested in revisiting the rationale for the GNU-Darwin anti-war blackout, it was formalized and generalized in a short essay the following April .

Challenging Darwin: Is sex really all
about the genes?

Challenging Darwin: Is sex really all
about the genes?
04/15/2004 10:30 AM
Author challenges Darwin's theory of "sexual selection." To Darwin, mutations that don't enhance survival, like peacocks' tails, must be aids to attracting mates to pass on genes. Homosexuality, therefore, is to Darwin and the Christian-right both an unnatural aberration. But with ever growing evidence of homsexual behavior in animals, from bonobos to penguins, isn't it time that Darwin's theory get replaced?

Charles Darwin on Tsunamis (1835)

Charles Darwin on Tsunamis (1835) 01/03/2005 12:14 PM
Xeni Jardin: During his crew's historic voyage on the Beagle in 1835, Charles Darwin experienced an earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Snip from Darwin's description:
Shortly after the shock, a great wave was seen from the distance of three or four miles, approaching in the middle of the bay with a smooth outline; but along the shore it tore up cottages and trees, as it swept onwards with irresistible force. At the head of the bay it broke in a fearful line of white breakers, which rushed up to a height of 23 vertical feet above the highest spring-tides. Their force must have been prodigious; for at the Fort a cannon with its carriage, estimated at four tons in weight, was moved 15 feet inwards.

A schooner was left in the midst of the ruins, 200 yards from the beach. The first wave was followed by two others, which in their retreat carried away a vast wreck of floating objects. In one part of the bay, a ship was pitched high and dry on shore, was carried off, again driven on shore, and again carried off. In another part two large vessels anchored near together were whirled about, and their cables were thrice wound round each other: though anchored at a depth of 36 feet, they were for some minutes aground.

The great wave must have travelled slowly, for the inhabitants of Talcahuano had time to run up the hills behind the town; and some sailors pulled out seaward, trusting successfully to their boat riding securely over the swell, if they could reach it before it broke. One old woman with a little boy, four or five years old, ran into a boat, but there was nobody to row it out: the boat was consequently dashed against an anchor and cut in twain; the old woman was drowned, but the child was picked up some hours afterwards clinging to the wreck. Pools of salt-water were still standing amidst the ruins of the houses, and children, making boats with old tables and chairs, appeared as happy as their parents were miserable.

Kiwi Vies For Darwin Award

Kiwi Vies For Darwin Award 08/30/2004 01:27 PM

This is about two years old, but I ran across it on SlashDot today in the midst of the discussion of a guy that strapped a jet engine to a wheelchair (worthy of his own post). What tops that? How about this New Zealander:

Unfortunately that small quantity of ice would not keep multiple beers cold during the course of a day in the shed. And no, you cannot, not under any circumstances, put ice into the beer. No!

It was obvious I had to come up with a better solution to the problem.

I knew from some long forgotten physics lecture that when a liquid expands into a gas it will draw heat from its surroundings. And I happened to have a source of a suitable liquid right in my shed in the form of a LPG cylinder. [...] What I needed was a way to use up a lot of fuel very, very quickly.

What I needed was a jet engine!

If you're a tinkerer, this is a good one to print and give to your spouse so that they can see that you could be so much worse.

Screenshot Darwin pkg_tools is a fast and simple way to manage darwinports. It can check what installed ports are obsolete and upgrade them in one easy process. It also gives you the ability to backup your compiled ports as binary tarballs which can be reinstalled at any time if something goes wrong.
Changes:
In this release, the version checking code is 500% percent faster, pkg_upgrade can update all ports at once, and there are some cosmetic fixes.

The founder of the GNU-Darwin project wrote an interesting editorial on Apple and open source today. I really appreciate that the GNU-Darwin project played a role in helping to make the APSL a better open source license.

In my opinion, Apple has made a lot of good progress (such as opening up Darwin, WebCore, and the Objective-C runtime under the APSL) but I do hope they'll go further and open up Cocoa under the APSL. Frequently when programming in Cocoa I remember that I have no significant rights since everything is still, as all of the Cocoa header files simply say, "Copyright 2003 Apple Computer. All Rights Reserved". I didn't use to care about that. Open source helped me realize that I can have rights, too. Apple's been gracious so far, I hope they continue to be. It's played a significant role in me buying and evangelizing Apple products.
