Ferel Robot Dogs Sniff Out Pollution

Ferel Robot Dogs Sniff Out Pollution

Ferel Robot Dogs Sniff Out Pollution 05/03/2004 11:38 PM

Almost a year ago, we first heard about Natalie Jeremijenko and her ferel robot dogs. Today, an Ithaca Journal article describes a recent visit by six of Natalie's ferel robot dogs to Washington Park, Ithaca, New York where they successfully sniffed out the source of some coal tar pollution. Because their primary goal is educating the public about pollution hazards, Natalie has taken to calling the robots "weapons of mass instruction". She hopes to make the plans simple enough that any high school student can download the information, upgrade their existing robot dog, and start sniffing out pollution in their neighborhood.

RFID-Equipped Robot Guide Dogs

RFID-Equipped Robot Guide Dogs 02/01/2005 10:04 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes, "A professor in computer science at Utah State University (USU) is building robots to help people with disabilities, according to a Utah Statesman article. The story, which is more focused on the professor than robotics, carries several anecdotes, such as an embarrassing voice recognition system. After a blind man cleared his throat, the robot misinterpreted the sound as a sign that the man wanted to go to the bathroom. Later, every time a man cleared his throat before speaking, the robot changed directions and guided him to the restroom. The project at USU is far more ambitious. They want to design RFID-enabled robots mounted on mobile carts which will welcome blind persons at the entrance of supermarkets and guide them through the store. I bet you'll never find those carts at a Wal-Mart." For more on about these RFID-equipped robots, check out Roland's latest blog entry on the subject.

A Bad Idea

The Return Of iSmell - How To Sniff Out
A Bad Idea
02/19/2004 12:45 PM
Final damning evidence that the internet bubble is back: some of the most ridiculous ideas are coming back. When Real Networks (back when they were Progressive Networks) first came out with Real Audio in the mid-90s, someone put up a fake site for "RealSmell", which joked about the ability to smell the internet with special scents being sent over your internet connection. It was a joke, but it didn't take long for one company, DigiScents, to actually pitch such a product - bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase "that website stinks." It should be no surprise at all that DigiScents died a quick death, but unfortunately the idea lives on. Apparently a British ISP is getting ready to offer an internet based "scent dome" that will let you download smells for your computer. Here's the best part: for the privilege of letting you smell the internet (mmmm), they plan to charge you about $475. Update: The BBC has an article with more details and pictures (but, sorry, no smells).

BoingBoing reader Cliff Van Eaton of New Zealand says:
The New Zealand postal service just introduced a scratch n' sniff postage stamp (although they call it a scratch and "smell" stamp, since I guess they've decided us Kiwis don't "sniff"). It's a 45 cent stamp (the normal rate for sending a letter) that gives off the scent of New Zealand-bred magnolia when it's scratched.

The only draw back is that it's only available as part of a presentation pack of all 5 flower stamps. I've had a good go at a normal over-the-counter book of ten 45 cents stamps, and I'll I get is the faint aroma of offset lithography.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

Straining pollution from the air

Straining pollution from the air 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
Recently Volvo began installing on some of its cars an air filter behind the front intake grill that cleans the air of more pollution than the vehicle itself emits. They've begun to sell models with this feature built-in; a fleet of mobile air cleaners will descend upon the world, cleaning it of smog -- in theory. Installing these filters on each vehicle in the city bus fleet seems a logical step forward from this; my rusty grasp of airflow says 5280 cubic feet an hour of air is about 140 cubic feet per second -- presuming the air intake is a foot square. Given six hours averaging 5 miles an hour, the bus will sweep 15,840 cubic miles of air. Data on the density of air particulates would be a valuable proof to this experiment; sampling the air repeatedly over...
