IBM In Denial Over Lotus Notes? Not
Really.
04/07/2005 05:29 AM
As Lotus Notes steadily loses share to Microsoft Exchange, people are
seeing similarities to
Lotus 1-2-3's loss of share to Microsoft
Excel. Microsoft Exchange is outselling Lotus Notes by a large margin,
and the only reason Notes still has a hold is because of its
entrenched install base. Today, all but one of the top analyst firms
recognize Exchange as the leading email product.
Yet, IBM and its Lotus Notes consultants still
continue to claim that they are the "best selling" email product on
the market. Sure, it's marketing spin (and thanks to Gartner,
it's not entirely false), but Forbes is missing the point (and
watching too much Monty Python). IBM is milking as much revenue from
what it already deems a dying product. IBM is strategically doubling
down on its services businesses and getting out of businesses that it
deems not core to this goal (
lapto
ps, anyone?). Their willingness to exit a commoditized,
competitive email software market in favor of growing other, more
lucrative parts of their business is actually a good display of
discipline. IBM is not hiding their head in the sand on this one --
they correctly recognize that the holy grail isn't email software.

Microsoft Opens Up Live Meeting Options
Microsoft Opens Up Live Meeting Options
08/11/2004 11:52 AMToday Microsoft will be unveiling new subscription/ licensing plans
for its Live Meeting Web service. Soon after Microsoft acquired
PlaceWare it launched Live Meeting. Live Meeting allows users to
present information over the Internet such as presentations, and
allows users to collaborate better on projects. As of right now
WebEx, Cisco, and Raindance Communications dominate the Web
conferencing market. Something Microsoft is hoping to change over the
next few years.
Already Microsoft is making good progress. Earlier this year
Microsoft announced a partnership with MCI. Together with Intercall
these two companies are giving Microsoft’s Live Meeting the push it
needs. There are a total of three new subscription/licensing plans.
The first plan is called "Named User". This plan supports a
maximum meeting size of 15 with prices ranging from $180 to $300
dollars (Standard and Professional Edition). The next license is
called "Room" which has a maximum meeting size of 2,000 with
prices ranging from $6,000 to $10,000. The last new license is called
"monthly minutes" which carries an unlimited meeting size,
which only costs at $0.35 to $0.45. Please note that I haven't listed
the minimum purchase for each new license. This information can be
found on Microsoft’s site later in the day.
Live Meeting is showing some real potential as Microsoft continues to
improve upon it, but it's going to takes some time for businesses to
adopt it. The Web conferencing market has shown to be pretty
profitable, especially during last year. If Microsoft plays its cards
right it may have another cashcow.

WIPO's development agenda meeting notes
WIPO's development agenda meeting notes
04/12/2005 03:56 AMCory Doctorow:
Donna sez, "The world's premiere IP-expansionists are considering the
radical proposal that more rightsholder protections aren't always in
the best interests of developing nations. Several copyfighters have
been taking collaborative notes all day inside the cavernous main
hall, and you can check out the transcript..."
Brazil (Group of Friends of Development - FOD): Highlight that this
document is supported by 14 Member States. Recall WIPO General
Assembly proposal. Development Agenda concerning IP issues.
New document is not a subsitute for previous document but
complementary. It is lengthy. Not exhaustive document. Further
develops 4 aspects of our proposals from last year. All of the 14
countries have reserved the right to further elaborate on different
aspects.
It is both conceptual and pragmatic. It contains conceptual
elaborations -- development concerns broaden IP system -- broaden and
strengthen WIPO's role, giving WIPO a more development-oriented focus.
Issues in this document affect Southern constitutencies, academics,
NGOs. This document is a platform for substantive debate on WIPO. This
is why we welcome ad hoc accreditation of NGOs. Document also contains
concrete proposals -- we welcome constructive engagement from other
WIPO Member States.
FOD -- relationship between development and intellectual property. How
is development affected by enforcement and implementation of IP
agreements? We could work on a consensual outcome that we could
forward to the General Assembly. We resist attempts to fragmentize the
components.
Central element; broad perspective on relationship between IP and
development. We seek to keep this proposal before the IIM. It is
important that this proposal be treated holistically; it's not
appropriate to separate out aspects of it, but we have broken it into
sections to allow for discussion of the 4 elements.
1) Mandate and Governance: we support a more "UN" agency type role for
WIPO. We support openness and transparency -- all voices should be
heard at WIPO, including IGOs and NGOs.
2) Norm-setting: Development oriented benchmarks. Norm-setting should
not be separated from development.
3) Technical Assistance
4) Technology Transfer

ETECH Notes: Life Hacks Live!
ETECH Notes: Life Hacks Live!
03/19/2005 03:03 AMCory Doctorow:
Here are my notes from Danny O'Brien and Merlin Mann's
Li
fe Hacks Live, at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in
San Diego. Danny's been doing variations on his Life Hacks talk since
the last Emerging Tech conference -- it's basically an effort to
research the productivity patterns of very prolific geeks and convert
them to wisdom that anyone can follow. Merlin has been adapting the
fantastic productivity cookbook
Getting Things Done into a series of tools for geeks, on an
equally fantastic blog called
43
Folders. They're now working on a book version of their stuff for
O'Reilly called
Life Productivity Hacks, and today's session
was a preview of it -- it was uproariously funny and incredibly
inspiring.
Here's a recap of last year, in bumper stickers:
HACKERS HEART PLAIN TEXT
Geeks store what they do in text and spurn big apps, using plain text
editors. Simplicity and speed, ease of search and extraction, cut and
paste. All you need in a filing system.
MY OTHER APP IS IN ~/BIN
If it wasn't plaintext, there's one app that they loved, like mail,
Excel, PowerPoint, etc. The rest was little glue scripts in ~/bin,
secret scripts they are embarrassed about and don't share with others,
though it turns out that they're all really similar.
SUPER PROLIFIC GEEKS DO IT IN PUBLIC WITH COMPLETE STRANGERS AND LIKE
IT. OH YES.
(don't put this on your car)
Geeks get their credibility and prolificness out of sharing everything
-- put it in public and the public organizes it for you. Put it on a
Wiki and others will fix it.
