Austin Wireless Juggernaut Continues to
Roll Through the Press
06/10/2004 07:18 PMIf you haven't read enough about Richard MacKinnon yet, just click:
MacKinnon is now officially ubiquitous, along with many other members
of Less Networks and Austin Wireless City, through this extensive,
multi-story coverage in the Austin Chronicle about the efforts that
lead to the current free movement in that city, and how it's
proceeding through cooperation with commercial entities, retail
establishments, and the city. MacKinnon is a civic booster of the
finest order: he doesn't talk and hold meetings--he builds. Zane
McCarthy of Austin Unleashed (inset) is interviewed alongside his pal
Bruce Sterling: McCarthy couples an interest in the community side
with business-grade installation and support. This takes some load off
volunteers and provides businesses who want someone they can pay to
worry about their problems with an outlet....

Live from CeBIT: Siemens CeBIT Videos
Live from CeBIT: Siemens CeBIT Videos
03/14/2005 06:03 PMYesterday's sunny, breezy day has been sandwiched between wet,
hateful storms, where each sloshing stomp between buildings gives the
clouds opporunity to pry open my orifices and dillute the pneumonia
sauce already boiling in my lungs. As a reprieve, I have been hiding
in Siemens New Media trailer, where I've watched them edit together a
bunch of movies documenting Siemens' CeBIT stuff, which they are
posting to their site under 'Highlight of the Day' > 'video clips.'
(It's a Flash pop-up site, which sucks, but alles kla.)
Disclaimer: I'm here as a guest of Siemens. Nobody told or even asked
me to link this, but I wanted to point it out—because I'm a
total whore and an ethics-free journalist and you should probably
write something really damning and personally insulting on your blog
exposing your mom our moral turpitude—and also
because I've seen how hard they've been working on it and it's been
interesting to see it come together.

The problem is that people who see you as a rock, instead of a

to be thinking about ways to get around the rock than listen to
it. Let them
realize too late that rocks can roll.

Hyatt on a Roll
04/16/2005 07:04 PMJust last month, I was griping about
Apple’s complete lack of transparency. As if to prove me wrong, Dave
Hyatt, the main Safari man, has recently revivified his
blog with a series of excellent pieces about plowing his way
through the Web Standards Project’s Acid2 compliance test.
He’s pushing back where parts of the test seem questionable, which
is totally appropriate. Then, yesterday, he did a just-the-facts post about Safari 1.3, which you get with OS X
10.3.9. I’ve been happily alternating between Camino and Firefox,
but will definitely give Safari another try.

Tomorrow night's edition of "
Nightline&quo
t; on ABC will be a departure from the norm: the entire program will
consist of Ted Koppel
reading the names and showing the
pictures of more than 700 US servicemembers killed in Iraq since
March 19, 2003.
Here's
an interview with the Nightline executive producer whose idea it
was.
The idea is
not without controversy: Lisa de Moraes of the
WaPo decries it as "a cheap, content-free stunt designed
to tug at our heartstrings and bag a big number on the second night of
the May ratings race." (Is this
really Nielsen-bait?)
And the
Sinclair Broadcast Group,
which owns eight ABC affiliates, is
refusing to air the
broadcast, calling it "motivated by a political agenda
designed to undermine the efforts of the United States in
Iraq."
