That AK-47 Automatic Rifle? That's Just
My MP3 Player
02/10/2004 02:41 AM
By now we've seen all sorts of odd or confusing convergence products, where people will try to add an MP3 player to a variety of different products that don't necessarily make sense as an MP3 player. Here's one, however, that goes a bit further than you might have predicted. Apparently, a UK company is selling the AK-MP3 - an MP3 player built into the ammunition clip of a Kalashnikov automatic rifle. The company selling this is doing so pretty much as a publicity stunt to sell the players loaded with audio books they're pitching. Their website includes a picture which suggests that not only should you be wandering around swinging your automatic rifle around while bopping to music coming out of your headphones - you should do it in a camouflage bikini. The rifle, the girl and the bikini are apparently not needed to use the MP3 player. The folks behind the player point out that: "This is our bit for world peace - hopefully, from now on many militants and terrorists will use their AK-47s to listen to music and audio books."

Automatic Condom Fitter

Automatic Condom Fitter 04/19/2005 08:47 AM

condom_auto.jpgA Senegalese inventor is getting quite a bit of press for his automatic condom fitting device that is being shown at the International Exhibition of Inventions. The device is designed to help men slip on prophylactics in one smooth motion—so fast that "with a bit of practice the man's partner probably won't even notice that he had reached over and used his trusty auto condom fitter."

The device is not commercialized at this time, but Mor Maty Seck hopes to see it in production soon. I can't tell off hand if it's a one-time use sort of thing or something that you'd just wear around your neck on a chain. (Thanks, pt!)

Researchers have devised software that churns through sports video and automatically grabs the highlights. A New Scientist article describes several of these projects--from snooker analysis at Trinity College to soccer game scanning at the University of Florence. Computer vision problems are notoriously difficult, but, according to the article, "as sports follow fixed rules, and take place in predictable locations, computers ought to be able to pick out the key pieces of play and string them together." Automatic feed unsubscibe

Automatic feed unsubscibe 09/16/2004 07:38 AM

Dave Winer asks about automatic unsubscribing from a feed, and it's an interesting question. If a feed is no longer updated, how should the publisher tell aggregators to unsubscribe from it? I think the simplest solution is for the server to return HTTP status code 410, as recommended here and here. An aggregator that receives a 410 for a specific found should then automatically unsubscribe from it.

This will be supported in the next build of FeedDemon, and I believe it's already supported by several other aggregators. In FeedDemon's case, the user will be prompted to unsubscribe, since automatically unsubscribing would remove the feed from FeedDemon's cache - losing the user's history of that feed's postings. If the user chooses not to unsubscribe, FeedDemon will turn off automatic updating for that feed.

Automatic Software Downloading Now
Patented
06/15/2004 11:49 AM
The latest in a long line of patent hoarding companies to come out of nowhere with a patent for something obvious to threaten lots of companies is British Technology Group. They're now waving around a a patent for automatic software downloads for things like anti-virus updates and are threatening a number of companies, including Microsoft, if they don't pay up. First off, there must be some prior art on this. Automatic software downloads are hardly a "new" technology. It would also be interesting to hear how this is possibly "non-obvious" considering that tons of companies offer this feature on their software, and its unlikely that most of them did so because they dug up some obscure patent and "stole" the idea. Instead, they just implemented a perfectly obvious idea to improve their own software. Now, thanks to the patent hoarding process, just about any software product that needs regular automatic updates will be more expensive, or won't work properly. This is innovation?

Automatic line ending conversions in IE 02/16/2004 09:27 PM

I've just updated my SitePoint blog with a tale of Javascript debugging woe. To cut a long story short, Internet Explorer for both Mac and Windows automatically converts sane line endings in to the platform specific alternatives whenever you assign a Javascript string to the value attribute of a text area. It's the kind of quirk that can take up a whole morning's worth of debugging.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition

Automatic Number Plate Recognition 03/06/2004 01:56 AM

London Congestion Charge : This is an interesting Wikipedia article about the "congestion charge" levied on vehicles entering the busiest zone in Central London. Apparently traffic was so bad here, that they charge people $9 US for a day pass to drive in it.

Those sneaky Brits are too smart for mere tollbooths for enforcement:

Two hundred and thirty CCTV-style cameras, of which 180 are installed at the edge of the zone, record a stream of video of roads in the zone. There are also a number of mobile camera units which may be deployed anywhere in the zone.

It is estimated that around 98% of vehicles moving within the zone will be caught on camera. The video streams are then transmitted to a data centre located in Central London where a computer system equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (OCR) software deduces the registration plate of the vehicle.

Here's another good article about the technology. I think the Brits have pioneered this just because the numbers on the license plates are so big.

Linux vs. OpenBSD

Linux vs. OpenBSD 12/17/2003 06:03 PM
I received the email first thing in the morning from the IT department. Our network would be undergoing a major overhaul to correct the ad hoc growth it had experienced in the last year, and starting next week Internet access would be sporadic. There would also be a new firewall and security measures, replacing the old OpenBSD system I'd managed to get installed last Spring. Happy for the heads-up, I went to work right away to make sure Linux had no place on our network. Since the Open Source Mullet had been canned, a new threat had arisen at my workplace: the Fat Perl Hacker had assumed most of the Open Source Mullet's system and network administration duties, and it was no mystery to anyone at my workplace that he had a hard-on for Linux tucked away under his enormous, cascading gut. Since he was a major suck-up and workaholic, he had a lot more credibility than the Open Source Mullet — this would be a real challenge for once.

The OpenBSD Project released OpenBSD 3.5 exactly on schedule on May 1, adding support for new functions and devices in the kernel and updating the base system. While it may not be the most versatile operating system in the world, OpenBSD shines when it comes to security, providing a default installation that doesn't have to be locked down and partially disabled before using it.
