Identifying the supernodes
Identifying the supernodes
01/03/2004 12:12 AMBased on the top 100 listed at scripting.com's community feedlist, one
third of the news I read is read by the other 125 people. This list is
generated from the top 100 feeds out of everyone who's uploaded OPML;
you can do so, too. Just create an account and you're set to go. With
this data, you could identify what blogs the top 100 most-read
bloggers *aren't* reading, read them, and feed them interesting
tidbits that they might not see otherwise. You could customize your
blogging for any audience. You could target only B-list bloggers. You
could create a directed network graph of who's reading who, find out
who isn't reading who, and fill in the gaps. If this new service
provided an aggregate dataset, I could teach people to become
supernodes. Unfortunately, the aggregate dataset being collected by
this...

I have been doing my blog reading and writing primarily with Net News Wire for my
reading and Ecto for my
writing. A simply copy paste will paste html which is a very good
start for a blog post. The biggest problem is the multi-author blogs.
I bugged Boing Boing about
it, and they put the name of the author in the text, even though it
was already in their creator tag. This makes it much easier for me
because the name of the author is in the html when I copy from Net
News Wire. So Brent, and other news reader developers... I have a
feature request if you haven't done it already. Can you please figure
out an easy way to allow me to copy the name of the author and view
the name of the author in the post? Also, for people working on
syndication formats, keep in mind that in the case of group blogs, the
author is important and I think some of the templates don't
automatically add the authors.

rather, they are in the driver's seat of the new distribution.
States and their passive consumers (of political goods) are the
ones at risk.

Voice Over Wi-Fi a Niche App
Voice Over Wi-Fi a Niche App
11/11/2003 03:11 PMA There is a lot of talk and some confusion around the value of voice
over Wi-Fi: It will take some time for the market to figure out how
extensively it should be used. I think voice over Wi-Fi can be really
useful to certain workers, but the current products have so many
shortcomings that a company must have enough of those workers and be
able to benefit enough to suffer through the headaches. Voice over
Wi-Fi will become a routine service only if the products improve
significantly....

Niche Publishing - Engadget
Niche Publishing - Engadget
03/06/2004 01:59 AMNiche publishing really isn't just for Nick Denton anymore... Peter Rojas,
the original blogger behind Gizmodo has broken out of that gig to
start Engadget... a competitor
to Gizmodo.
Denton still has a leg up (first mover advantage we used to call
it) on individuals launching one or two focused sites on their own, as
he can aggregate his entire Gawker media property audiences if he
wants to for an advertiser, or he can sell the advertising
piecemeal... but, folks like Rojas can probably make enough money off
their sites short-term to support themselves, and long term to build a
living that they enjoy.
Best of luck Peter...

Social reading -- A niche to be filled?
Social reading -- A niche to be filled?
09/11/2004 08:54 AMThere's a niche in the blogging/media ecosystem I hope someone fills.
Aggregators are wonderful, but I find using them makes me as lonely as
a night watchman making his rounds. So, between the solipsism of
aggregators and the impersonalism of mainstream newspapers, I'd like a
site where my friends and I can read stuff together. We suggest blogs
and sites, and the aggregator surfaces the hot posts based on clever
metrics and heuristics (mumble mumble handwaving). And we get to
comment and annotate for one another. That last point is important
because I find that I often don't leave comments...

this prediction is right on the money. A gestalt, by the way, is a

are three of the many parts that comprise the gestalt.

EBay Spawns Niche Market
03/19/2005 03:09 AMWho says that innovation off the Web is dead? It turns out that eBay
has given birth to a neat little niche market that allows people to
drop off their stuff to a brick and mortar environment. OK, the idea
is sound for now. But is it anywhere near as recession proof as eBay
itself?…
