Writing in the Granite State News about New Hampshire’s Technology Promoting Student Excellence Program, Mary Saliba reports, “The Governor provided each Paul School 7th grader with a Macintosh iBook laptop in January, and in this short time, principal Matthew Jozokos reports, ‘Every child has increased grades.’ He also said there have been decreased absences, and that the students were much more excited to be learning. He added that the teachers were learning a lot too.”

Student Who Changed Grades Caught

Student Who Changed Grades Caught 05/11/2004 03:16 PM
A student who hacked into school computers to change his own grades has been caught. The student has been suspended and they're debating whether or not to file charges against him. This seems like such a cliche hack. The student also apparently tried to delete over a thousand files on the computer system as school officials were monitoring them and trying to track down the hacker. So, this week we have stories about the stere otypical teenager Sasser hacker and a kid who changed grades in the school computer. What other stereotypical hack is missing to completely drive home the nerdy teenaged hacker stereotype?

Updated iBooks

Updated iBooks 12/17/2004 06:34 PM
Apple have updated the range of iBooks. Processing power has increased and Airport cards are now standard across the range. Price reductions also bring down the 12-inch model below the magic $1000 mark (in the US obviously). The revised 14-inch model looks particularly good value — 1.33 GHz G4, 60Gb HD and DVD-R/CD-RW for £1049. Certainly a worthy alternative to the 12-inch PowerBook G4. Far be it from me to circulate rumours, but a revision to the iBook range suggests that the G5 PowerBooks may not be too far away…

Ribbon Dancer robot

Ribbon Dancer robot 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

At Gel, Bruce Shapiro, artist in residence at the Science Museum of Minnesota, talked about his notion of "motion control" as an "emerging medium for artistic expression". As his website explains, motion control is a "term used to describe a variety of techniques for orchestrating the movement of machinery and objects".

One of the machines he brought to demonstrate its artistic expression was Ribbon Dancer. The willowy one-armed robot performed a routine for us for a couple minutes to a classical piece of music. Near the end of the piece, the ribbon got hung up on the lower part of the apparatus while the arm kept going with the routine, tugging obliviously on the caught fabric. The crowd gasped. For a second there, we thought the arm was going to pull the whole thing over -- not unlike the robot-like AT-AT that got tripped up by a Rebel harpoon on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back -- but Bruce stepped in to stop the machine and free the ribbon. Despite the mistake, the crowd's emotional reaction to the dancer's potentially hazardous misstep demonstrated the potential for the acceptance of artistic expression by machines.

(And in a somewhat more disturbing demonstration of the dancer's representation of life, when Bruce stopped it at the end of the routine and began to walk off the stage, it began to twitch awkwardly from some stray electrical signals, a death rattle of sorts. Bruce leapt back on stage and pulled the plug; the twitching abruptly stopped and the arm fell slack atop the metal shaft, like he'd killed it.)

The state of Maine has distinguished itself by offering iBooks to all public school seventh and eighth graders. The cost of the iBook program has been a political minefield especially as legislators in the cash-strapped state consider expanding it to public high schoolers. A new deal put forth by Apple may give that plan new hope, according to the Portland Press Herald: Apple is willing to rent laptops and defer their payments for a year.

Blue Bands for Blue Budgets

Blue Bands for Blue Budgets 02/01/2005 10:09 PM

I had to go all the way over to LISNews< /a> to find out that a sister Library System here in Illinois has started a totally awesome project called Libraries Matter. Here at home, our kids saved up some money to buy the 10–pack of Lance Armstrong yellow wristbands because they’re all the rage at school. Can you imagine if we could start something similar with these blue ones for libraries? Brilliant job, Alliance Library System!

One thing, though – how about offering packs smaller than 50 so that ordinary folks like myself can buy some and give them out to friends, kids, etc.? Let’s get some grassroots support going, not just top down from the institutional level! Then, let’s think about how we can use these on Advocacy Day this year.

Tangent: When visiting the ALS web site tonight, I realized they’ve added blogs to the home page (kind of, sort of). Sweet! Unfortunately, no RSS feeds to be found anywhere, which means I won’t be able to add them to my aggregator, which means I’ll have to keep relying on other web sites to highlight ALS projects for me. Not sweet. C’mon, ALS, show us the RSS!
