Rebuilt Da Vinci Self-Propelled Wagon
Rebuilt Da Vinci Self-Propelled Wagon
07/03/2004 11:36 AM
The Times has a
great article about a modern-day recreation of a design by Leonardo Da
Vinci -- a three-wheeled wagon that may not only have been the world's
first self-propelled vehicle, but possibly one of the first computers.
Powered by a wound spring, tensed by pushing the wagon backwards, the
range of the device -- which has been rebuilt for the Leonardo museum
and library in Vinci, Italy -- was only about 40 yards. Not enough for
a trip to the trip to the store, but enough, perhaps, to move a prop
across a stage by itself.

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
05/21/2004 02:35 AMBack in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville,
the small (mostly deserted) California town was
put up
for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8
million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only
problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and
the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that
the
buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has
been sold again -
but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking
price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go
through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on
eBay," contributing to the
use of
eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and
sellers.

eBay: Not For Everyone
eBay: Not For Everyone
08/27/2004 03:36 PMFor as big a group of users as eBay has, still there are plenty of
people who would
just rather buy products at a fixed price. Of
course, eBay does now have the "Buy it now" feature that solves
exactly that issue, but that seems like a footnote to how eBay is
supposed to work. The writer here notes that the whole eBay auction
takes too much time. If she wants to buy something, she just wants to
buy it. She doesn't want to bid. She doesn't want to check the
auction, and she doesn't want to wait a few days to find out if she
got the product. For the most part, I've had a similar experience.
While I have bought two or three things off of eBay, overall, I've
found better prices, reliability and service just by buying at fixed
price stores (including eBay's fixed price division Half.com).

Sun selling big on eBay
08/04/2004 09:57 AMSelling expensive items of hardware are no rarity on eBay; planes,
homes, cars, all are items that get traded on the the popular auction
site. However, Sun Microsystems are taking their eBay partnership to a
new hight.
"
Sun is aggressively engaging with ... alternate markets, such
as eBay, to generate new sales models where customers set the
price," said John Fowler, executive vice president of Sun's
Network Systems Group. "The success of recent eBay auctions has
exceeded expectations. Sun provides support for its highly scalable
and reliable Solaris OS, Red Hat Linux, and SUSE Linux, with servers
and workstations certified for Microsoft Windows -- the broadest
operating system support in the industry."

useful ways, especially with regard to reputation systems....

02/10/2004 02:49 AMAs reported by The Industry Standard, eBay is buying mobile.de, a
large German on-line auto classifieds site. In case you didn't already
know, mobile.de has been a long-time user of MySQL on their site. Not
only do they run MySQL, but from what I've heard they've managed to
push it very, very hard. Good stuff....
