Government Comes Out With Cyberspace
Study -- Seven Years Late
03/31/2005 04:50 PMPeople have said, in the past, that internet years are like dog years.
Things change so fast that a single year feels more like seven years
in a non-internet business. Perhaps the government works on the
reverse. Seven years real time is more like one year of operating
time. That might explain why the Commerce Department has just now
released their "Signposts in Cyberspace" study that they
were told to put out in 1998 as part of the Next Generation Internet
Research Act. The findings, as you might imagine, seem a bit... out
of date. Nothing too ridiculous, but certainly nothing particularly
new. And, some of the recommendations, like increasing the number of
top level domains available, started happening a few years ago
already.

Intel chips that turn desktops into
wireless base stations
12/02/2003 01:24 AMIntel is working on a microchip that would let desktop PCs double as
access points for wireless networks. It's already possible to jigger a
PC do something like this already, so I suppose the idea is to make
this cheap enough and easy enough that most people wouldn't need to
bother buying a standalone wireless access point. On the other hand,
the cost of 802.11b access points is dropping to near zero, so is this
really solving a major problem? Read...

Generation April Fools Gags
04/01/2005 05:04 PMThere are what appears to be an even higher than normal set of
ridiculous April Fool's gags out there today. While we do our best to
avoid them (while chuckling here or there), the folks over at
MobilePipeline deserve extra credit for not just coming up with an
original April Fool's gag, but mocking the whole concept... all in
one! Yes, it's a study on the
steep growth curve
associated with next generation April Fool's gags, predicting an
ongoing "increase at a compounded annual rate of 22 percent through
2009." However, at the same time, they're noting that, with this
rapid growth there has been a marked decline in quality -- which the
industry needs to watch out for: "Vendors must embrace the fact that
market penetration occurs not because of the quantity of the gags but
because of the quality." Meanwhile, as all of these analysts like to
do, they try to dig deeper into the meaning behind such a trend: "The
dramatic increase in April Fools gags indicates a vibrant technology
sector that, perhaps, has too much time on its hands." Indeed.
