Unsanity has announced updates to FruitMenu (now version 3.3) and Xounds (bumped up to 2.2). For those unfamiliar with these system add-ons (aka "haxies"), FruitMenu allows complete control over the content of the Apple menu and contextual menus and Xounds provides audio feedback and effects while using Mac OS X. You Software has released You Control 1.3, an update to its menu utilities collection that adds four new modules -- CPU Monitor, Disk Monitor, Memory Monitor and Network Monitor -- and updates the iTunes module with the ability to view and modify song ratings, as well as choose new button designs for the controls. The CPU Monitor graphically displays how much processing power is consumed by each application, including the system software, while the Disk Monitor shows available space in all mounted hard drives as well as each drive's read/write activity.

I've removed the menu on the top of the front page from the site for now. Since I launched it, I've been playing with it on and off, listening to feedback, and trying to determine whether or not it adds or substracts from the user experience of the site. When I got back from vacation, I loaded up kottke.org in the browser and just didn't like the looks of the thing sitting up there. Don't know why exactly, but since it still does that flicker thing in Firefox and doesn't work in Opera at all (thanks to everyone for sending in their fixes, BTW), it's probably for the best. I'm going to work on it some more and it will probably return in some modified form soon.

Unsanity have released ShapeShifter, a shareware utility for installing and previewing themes on Mac OS X. As the blurb states -

ShapeShifter is a revolutionary new product that lets you change the overall appearance of your Mac using 'themes'. We're not talking about just desktop backgrounds and icons here, we're talking about everything - the look of windows, menus, buttons, absolutely everything.

Themes are a popular part of the Linux world and (as far as I know) this is the first proper application allowing reliable theme management and control in Mac OS X. I have my reservations though - when it comes to installing third party themes, I remember using Kaleidosc ope on my old Performa and battling frequent crashes and hang-ups. I'm also quite happy with the way the Finder looks in Panther - if it ain't broke why fix it?
