Upcoming Blogging and RSS Presentations
01/07/2004 04:55 PMIf you're in the Chicagoland area, here are two events at which
I'll be speaking during the next two months. If you've heard me talk
about blogging and/or RSS, there won't be much new here, but if you
want to make a New
Year's resolution for your library or for yourself (as in,
find out why news aggregators are so great), come on by because
they're both free!

How to
Use RSS to Know More and Do Less
SLS Tech Summit
Thursday,
February 19
1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
"RSS, also known as Rich Site Summary, is an XML format
that allows syndication of Web content. But what does that really
mean? Learn how to use a news aggregator to read multiple sites to
keep current while reducing the strain of your workload. Learn how
news aggregators help you beat information overload and keep you more
informed at the same time! In addition, you can start providing RSS
syndication of your own news for your library's
patrons."

Upcoming conference on Fair Use
Upcoming conference on Fair Use
06/15/2004 01:12 PM
The New York Times has a great
story about the painful process a college professor went through
to clear the rights for a short, informative video to be given to
incoming students:
"It's crazy," Professor Turow said of the labyrinth of
permissions, waivers and fees he navigated to get the roughly three
minutes of video clips included on the CD, which was paid for by a
grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The process took
months, Professor Turow said, and cost about $17,000 in fees and
royalties paid to the various studios and guilds for the use of clips.
The film used ranged from, for example, a 1961 episode of "Ben Casey"
to a more-recent scene from "ER."
As a result of the project, this Friday the Annenberg School for
Communication at University of Pennsylvania will be holding a
conference called Knowledge
Held Hostage that will explore issues of Fair Use in education. The full program
features Creative Commons co-founder and board member Hal Abelson.

upcoming conference at Stanford
upcoming conference at Stanford
04/06/2005 12:37 AMThe Stanford Center for Internet and Society is hosting a conference
on April 30, reviewing the cyberlaw day in the Supreme Court. Sign up
here. Here's their
announcement.
On March 29, 2005, the U.S. Supreme Court
heard arguments in two cases that together will greatly determine how
government can and will regulate the Internet in the future, and the
impact that the public interest will have on the development of
cyberlaw over the next decade.
In MGM v. Grokster, the Court will decide whether copyright holders
can veto consumer electronics and computing innovations that upset the
content industries' prevailing business models, even where the
technology's non-infringing uses provide substantial benefits to
consumers. The question is whether consumer demand for new and better
products will drive technological development, or copyright owners'
demand for control will retard it.
In Brand X v. FCC, the Court will decide whether the FCC should
retain the option to regulate cable modem services to promote open
access to broadband lines, universal service and network neutrality,
as it did in the early days of the Internet when most people connected
over common-carrier telephone lines. The question is whether
tomorrow's communications services will be defined by citizen choices
or by the business interests of a handful of cable broadband
companies.
At Cyberlaw in the Supreme Court, the Stanford Law School Center for
Internet and Society will convene a discussion of these cases, their
broader implications, and what effect the pending Supreme Court
decisions could have on the public interest. Panels of attorneys
litigating and arguing these cases, the parties affected by them, the
policy advocates whose work will begin once the Judges rule, and the
people thinking about what the legal landscape will look like for the
next ten years will discuss both cases and the impact the decisions
will have on the future.

War and the Media
04/09/2004 04:01 PMThe UC Berkeley Journalism School is hosting a great looking 3-day
conference on the role of the media and war this week. There is a very
interesting list of speakers, with some big and little names. Seeing
Todd Gitlin and a US Marine Corps Lt. Colonel on the same panel, it
seems likely that there will be some real debates, not just a liberal
echo chamber. Plus, unlike most of the tech conferences I like to go
to, it is free. If I can get away from my other duties, I'll try to
spend some time there this week and report back....

MySQL Conference Roundup
MySQL Conference Roundup
04/28/2004 03:22 AMRussell Beattie has an excellent MySQL conference roundup.
My notes of their notes:
From Jeremy's
post, it looks as if MySQL Cluster uses a new in-memory table
format, NDB. The benchmarks are impressive on a 72 CPU Sun Fire
server. Has limitations: 8K rows, no online reindexing, etc. Based on
internal R&D from 1996.
Yahoo is using MySQL for some mission-critical apps. There is an
internal battle between Oracle and MySQL advocates for such apps.
LiveJournal discusses memcached, a distributed
caching system. There is a PHP api for
memcached.
Sabre
is extremely impressive.

Well it looks like April will be a very good month. There's:

Open Source Content Management -- April 16-18, 2003 [_Go_]
Sigh. No way to be at both and it looks like I'm probably a speaker

still working out what to talk about but I suspect (or hope at least)
it'll be interesting.

Presentations Anyone?
Presentations Anyone?
12/03/2002 06:41 AMPresentations Anyone?
While I suspect that most of my regular readers have seen these
already, I just threw up a home page for all the presentations I gave
in the past year. [_Go_] My php-con stuff as well as my webbuilder
stuff is there. Unfortunately none of my presentations from preceding
years are online -- or likely to be. Some was company proprietary and
other so far predates PowerPoint it's not even funny. Sigh. Legacy
office data anyone?
Note: Yes I do "sigh" a lot. It seems like as far as we've come in
computing, there's just so damn far to go. At times it boggles the
mind how crude everything still is. I've recently been reading Tog on
Software Design which came out in Dec 95 and it seems like all of our
office software is exactly where it was when he wrote it. It's a
great albeit at times depressing book.
Oh and it snowed again in Boston last night. It seems like Old Man
Winter is here early and with a vengeance.
