The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform
03/19/2005 03:17 AMIt seems that any time you hear someone saying they're trying to reach
the "middle ground" on an argument, you might want to suspect their
motives. That was the case a few months ago when some think tank
wanted to
reach
a middle ground on file sharing, which was really a thinly veiled
explanation for why the entertainment industry should control the
internet. We've now got another one, which is even scarier.
TheRegister has published an excerpt from a paper supposedly about
"media literacy" which claims its looking for a
"
middle ground" between "etopians" who want the internet to remain open
and the regulate and control crowd who want to ban and filter
everything. However, the conclusions are anything but a middle
ground. They're saying that people are stupid and can't handle the
internet as is, and that there should be a separate
internet that is
more like TV, with acceptable providers handling the content, and
acting as the guides to all the content out there. This is
mischaracterizing the debate. It's not a middle ground at all, but a
fairly radical solution. There's already a TV out there. This is
designed from the wrong mindset. The internet
is
not a content platform, but a communications one. This
article flips that around and assumes that it's a content platform --
for the sake of the content providers.

PHP Journal is a new, quarterly technical publication focused on all
things PHP. The first issue of PHPJ is scheduled for publication in
January 2003, and features a great line-up of columns (that will
appear in every issue) and feature stories, all written by
experienced PHP developers and authors. If you want to know more about
the content of the journal, check our Web site (http://www.phpj.com),
which is just starting to take shape. Watch for subscription
information between now and January.
One of the regular columns in PHPJ is called "Out in the Open," and
it's dedicated to getting PHP community news out to the ommunity. For
example, do you run a PHP user group and want to invite others to
attend? Are you writing a book about PHP, or are you already
published? Have you release a new PEAR module or PHP application that
you'd like to share with others? If it's about PHP, we want to hear
about it.
If you'd like your announcement to appear in "Out in the Open", please
send your announcement in the the following format to phpjed @
phpj.com:
Title (what are you announcing)
Brief description (50 words of less)
URL (for more information)
We are happy to receive product announcements, press releases, and
blurbs from individuals and groups. Entries will be edited for grammar
and space, and not every announcement can run do to space constraints
in the printed version of the magazine.
We look forward to hearing from you!

04/15/2004 06:16 PMEngadet reports on Aiwa's new ¥15,000 headphones, which can take
standard audio input and play it through and/or record it as an MP3 to
its built-in 128MB of memory. It's a great idea, and I can think of a
million things I would love to use them for, from recording tracks off
vinyl records to the air-traffic control chatter on Channel 12 on
United flights.

scripting (XSS) attacks. It should be used to
filter input supplied by the user, such as HTML
code entered in form fields.

The Compact Disc Input and Control library encapsulates CD-ROM reading
and control for applications wishing to be oblivious to the OS- and
device-dependent properties of a CD-ROM. It provides an API for access
to SCSI-MMC (multimedia commands) and support for CD image types like
BIN/CUE, cdrdao's TOC, and Nero's NRG, which gives applications using
the library the ability to read disc images as though they were CDs.
ISO-9660 filesystem support is included, as are utility programs for
displaying CD and CD-ROM drive information, reading the blocks of a
CD, and extracting files from an ISO-9660 filesytem image. cdparanoia
is also included.
Changes:
The cdparanoia library and cdparanoia command are now included, making
this the only single-source cdparanoia that works on FreeBSD, Cygwin,
Solaris, BSDI, and GNU/Linux. The manual documentation and API
documentation (via doxygen) were reworked, the internal filesystem
structure was reorganized, and a number of platform-specific bugfixes
and fixes for C++ compilation were made.
