Creating Sasser?

For all the hype about how Microsoft's bounty helped to catch the accused writer of the Sasser worm, the police are apparently now investigating whether or not the informant helped create the worm himself. This opens up a whole new set of questions about bounties. People who help each other create worms and viruses can turn around and backstab their partners for the bounty (and, of course, then be accused back by those they fingered).

Save The Children calls on release of Iraqi children from jails. This apparently in response to recent media reports on the abuse of children in Iraqi prisons. And it's not just Save the Children who is concerned, but UNICEF, Amnesty International, and the Red Cross. Infact, Congress has called for a special briefing tomorrow from the Pentagon on "confidential reports" from the Red Cross on prison conditions in Iraq. The Pentagon is closing the briefing to the public, however, and apparently thinks that even Congress shouldn't know the details of how we treat prisoners.
"It's something of a stretch of policy and procedures to give them to the Congress," Rumsfeld spokesman Larry Di Rita said.

Firefox Spawns Two Books 02/01/2005 10:00 PM
In the February issue of Wired Magazine, Josh McHugh, in his article “The Firefox Explosion,” said, “It’s fast, secure, open source - and super popular. The hot new browser called Firefox is rocking the software world. (Watch your back, Bill Gates.)” Now, O’Reilly Media - the premier information source for leading-edge computer technologies - offers two books about Firefox, virtually assuring the browser’s continued assault on Microsoft’s fatally flawed Internet Explorer. New security features are an important improvement in ASP.NET 2.0. These features include membership services that manage a database of user accounts, hashed passwords, a role manager for managing role membership for users, and five new server-side controls that make implementing forms authentication much easier. ASP.NET 2.0 also offers a provider model that gives you complete control over the implementation of the Membership and Role services and cookieless forms authentication. You also get easy Web-based administration for simple local and remote administration of user accounts and roles, as well as enhanced control of other non-security related settings.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Headaches

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Headaches 07/19/2004 11:41 AM

Companies brace for Microsoft security update: An interesting look at the apparently huge Windows XP Service Pack 2 due next month and what it means for software companies. The changes will affect thousands of programs that have depended on how Windows handles certain things.

The new system bolsters security on Windows, its built-in Internet Explorer browser and Outlook Express e-mail. Among the changes, a Windows Firewall will automatically be turned on, helping to guard against attack. The browser has been fortified, and a new attachment manager will offer tougher policing against e-mail-borne attacks.

The changes in the way Windows polices itself — particularly the newly strengthened firewall — could cause troubles for applications that are used to working with Windows' old ways. Some say that's particularly true of applications that regularly interact online, such as gaming programs or music services.
