Last week I watched (and I hope you got to see) one of the greatest comebacks in sports history during the Men's All-Around Gymnastics competition at the Athens Olympics. American Paul Hamm missed his dismount so badly on the vault that he endangered the judges when he landed, flat on his dignity, in front of them. From leading the competition, he was suddenly thrust into 12th place with only two of six events left. But later he managed to get the two highest marks awarded to any athlete in this competition to eke out first place, the first time in 100 years for an American, by 1/1,000th of a point. Marvelous!

Neat-o-keen epidemiological concept: use informal surveys to identify the highly connected individuals who are likely to be super-spreaders of illness, then vaccinate them.

The idea is to randomly choose, say, 20% of the individuals and ask them to name one acquaintance; then vaccinate those acquaintances. Potential super-spreaders have such a large number of acquaintances that they are very likely to be named at least once, the researchers found. On the other hand, the super-spreaders are so few in number that the random 20% of individuals is unlikely to include many of them.

Does anyone know of a free/cheap tool for OS X that will let me rotate video clips by 90 degrees? I have a little Exilim camera that shoots short video clips, and I'm perennially framing my clips in portrait, forgetting that the camera saves everything as a landscape-ratio AVI. I want to be able to open the clips, rotate them 90 degrees clockwise or counter-clock and save them again as AVIs or MOVs. Mail me if you know the answer, please!

OK, here are a couple of solutions for this:

1. In QuickTime Pro: Movie -> Get Movie Properties -> Video Track/Size -- then use rotate buttons
2. Simple Rotate, an iMovie plugin

Hence, Life. And yet, the most complex information sorting system yet devised by humans, the Internet, remains relatively simple and flat, rather as life was before the Cambrian explosion. Every IP address is like a single celled animal, with larger critters yet to emerge. I've been expecting to see more new forms of order in Cyberspace than I have so far and am always watchful for the substrates of connection that might support it as it emerges. Lately, I've been watching sites that seek to narrow and map the famous 6 degrees of separation, like Friendster, Tribes.Net, and LinkedIn.Com. I'm not entirely sure these things are going anywhere truly interesting, but they are certainly diverting to observe from a sociological standpoint. The former two are like gigantic singles bars for Burning Man refugees, while the latter seems to function largely as a means to reduce professional surface tension between aspiring business types. It occurs to me, however, that since I am eager to increase the personal connectivity among you BarlowFriendz and give you better opportunities to know one another without passing through me, these sites might be useful to us. (There is already a so-far fairly quiescent BarlowFriendz "tribe" on Tribes.Net.) At least, it feels worthy of an experiment....

Of course, as the article points out, the definition of what is a diploma mill is a bit tricky. KALW in San Francisco did an hour long radio interview with John Brady Kiesling and John H. Brown, the American Foreign Service officers who resigned over Bush's Iraq policy. Both are impressive speakers, and Kiesling is as articulate and as convincing as his letter:
