Iraqis the Only Ones Getting Cheap Gas
(AP)
06/05/2004 02:43 AM
AP - One of the prewar forecasts was that by invading Iraq, the world would profit from stable exports of Iraq's oil. And that would translate into cheap gas for American drivers. Now, with U.S. gasoline averaging $2.05 per gallon — about 50 cents more than the pre-invasion price — that logic has been flipped on its head.

From Bob Morris writes in response to my newsletter article on how VoIP works: A Dedham MA provider, www.rnktel.com sells prepaid VoIP which is $.01/minute to most places in the world (Latin America being the major exception, where it is (a)poor connections and (b)$.06 and up). On their web site you give your credit card and get $5, $10, or $20 worth of billing. They send you a pin number by email. In their case, you call an access number in the 781 area or one in RI. No one I know has reported finding $.01 service in other...

A classic "modest proposal" written up by Christopher Kenton in Business Week about a way to solve the spam problem. Kenton has been pointing out all the same things lots of people have been pointing out about why all of the various spam laws won't work - and he's been getting slammed by angry emailers for it. One assumed that he is against these laws because he has a personal assistant who screens his spam for him - which is when he had his brainstorm: to help solve both the spam problem and the job situation, everyone should hire "personal email assistants" who can manually scan their email for them. He points out that not only does this solve the basic problem, but it has a nice balancing effect. Part of the reason there's so much spam is that the economy hasn't been great, and companies are forced to market more aggressively - such as by spam. However, if we put everyone back to work by making them email scanners, then the need for such aggressive marketing decreases - and the system balances out. Not only that, but now we all know the best way to help find yourself a personal email assistant: just send some spam. After all, under the new US anti-spam law, it's perfectly legal.

How Cheap is MySQL? 09/07/2004 02:27 PM
Speaking of MySQL, if these new results are to believed, MySQL is about 60% the cost of Oracle. MySQL ... $ 82.74/op Oracle ... $139.84/op That's measuring "total operations per second", which isn't the "normal" database comparison metric. But let's assume it's a fair way to compare databases anyway. (We could argue all day week the time about the "right" way to do it.) That's surprising, given the vast difference in size between the two companies, isn't it? Back when...

Cheap, Illegal Software

Cheap, Illegal Software 06/10/2004 05:43 PM

OEM software scams on the rise: In a moment of serious self-delusion I almost fell for one of these outfits. Yes, I'll admit, I wanted Dreamweaver MX for $60.

[sigh] Too good be to true, and all that.

It is not difficult to recognise the pirates from reputable resellers: their prices are typically much lower than those offered by official resellers. They often use anonymous domain hosting services and their sites lack sufficient contact information.

More importantly, the software they offer is unlikely to be OEM. Adobe never offered Acrobat or Photoshop (with the exception of Photoshop Elements) as OEM software, but it is widely available from OEM vendors.

I asked Chris for his opinion, and he noted that the ordering page of the site I was looking wasn't even secured with SSL. Yikes.

Cheap Protective LCD Film

Cheap Protective LCD Film 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

protective_lcd_film_six.jpgMy friend recently spent roughly $300 on a brand new Motorola V300 because his Nokia 3390 Gold was starting to show its age. After setting it up to work on his account and sitting down for a nice bowl of soup, he called my friend Evan to tell him about his purchase and give him his new number. The conversation lasted a whole thirty seconds, as my friend promptly dropped the phone into his bowl of soup, making it the most expensive cheese & broccoli he's had to date. The digital camera LCD protective film probably wouldn't have helped him that much, but we know how easy it is to scratch your screen without a second thought about it. Protect your cell phone, video camera or anything else with an LCD with this $6.00 film. The tacky side of the sheet has a silicone membrane to prevent air bubbles and the stickiness can be replenished with a quick dip in water. It’s also available in a number of sizes. (Thanks, Phil!)
