20-inch OLED screen 03/19/2003 10:25 PM

a-Si-OLED.jpgPrototype of a 20-inch display from Taiwanese company IDTech that uses OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes). These are going to be replacing LCD screens really, really soon, since they're brighter, thinner, use less power, and will eventually be cheaper to produce than LCDs.

Samsung on Tuesday announced it has developed the largest single-panel active matrix (AM) OLED (organic light emitting diode) display for computers and televisions. "With the development of the world's largest OLED at WUXGA resolution, Samsung has achieved a technological advantage and is positioned well to be a leader in the large-sized OLED for the TV market," Jun-Hyung Souk, senior vice president of the LCD R&D Center said. The 21 inch OLED features 6.22 million pixels and uses AM-based technology for low power consumption and high-resolution qualities.

Casio's 2.2 Inch VGA Screen

Casio's 2.2 Inch VGA Screen 09/22/2004 06:13 AM

22_640.jpg imageCasio comes out of absolutely nowhere with a 2.2" amorphous TFT LCD capable of display VGA resolution. Hell, I didn't even know Casio made screens.

If you've forgoten your display terminology, VGA resolution is 640 x 480 dots - what used to be the standard number of pixels a screen could display at the same time. Modern computer screens (like the one you're looking at now) can display, oh, 1024 x 768 dots of resolution, and often more. (OMG, N00b. - ed.)

Toshiba GENIO with 4-Inch Screen 09/01/2004 01:18 PM

vga_genio.jpg imageKeitai Watch has posted a report from the "PDA Solutions Fair 2004," and probably the most attractive item is Toshiba's new version of the "GENIO e" Windows Mobile PDA. And by attractive, I mean VGA - 640 x 480 resolution. On a 4 inch screen, no less. Yes, I am attracted to 4" VGA screens, and it takes a man to admit it.

06/24/2004 09:47 AM

benq_fp231w.jpg imageThe only bad thing I can say about BenQ's new FP231W large-screen LCD monitor is that my video card might not have the polygonal prowess needed to pump out 1,920 by 1,200 pixels worth of videogame. However, if there were one sitting on my desk here -- and I'm cleaning off a little spot, actually, just so it knows that it would be welcome to stay over -- I would take the 23-inch, 16ms flat panel and a favorite game and try. Sure, we might drop some frames here and there, "chug" some of you kids call it, but we'd be trying something new together, which is beautiful, really, and although it might be a little awkward at first, I'm sure we'd both learn to make it work.

irivern10.jpg imageKorean MP3 fabricator iRiver has announced a new flash-memory-based pendant-style player with a 16-shade OLED display. Dubbed the N10 (INTENZ!), the unit will be offered in 128MB, 256MB, and 512MB options. Apparently, the N10 already sells in Europe for around $360 (yeah, no way, right?). Flash players are extremely neat in function and size, but pricing like that is just painful.

Future looking bright for OLED displays

Future looking bright for OLED displays 04/19/2005 07:05 AM
The growing number of electronics devices using OLED (organic light emitting diode) displays shows that, after years of promise, the technology is finding a home in more and more products. But while OLED displays might challenge LCDs (liquid crystal displays) as the screens of choice for smaller gadgets, don't expect the technology to become mainstream for notebook PCs or TVs within this decade.

Ovideon OLED Media Player

Ovideon OLED Media Player 12/22/2004 01:36 AM

ovideonplayer.jpg imageIs it Christmas yet? Can we start drinking? Is that what people do for Christmas, or just my family? We get together over a steaming mug of Nyquil to share in The Yule Sob, then donate our tears to charity.

There are still a few people kicking out there in gadget land, I hear, like Ovideon—they just announced a new portable media player with an OLED screen. And even cooler, they're based right here in the US of A, in beautiful Silicon, uhm, Illinois. And even though the screen is sort of small (or at least appears to be—I can't find official stats) it has a relatively high resolution of 512 by 218 pixels, as well as a 1-inch hard drive inside. LiveDigitally is quoting a price of $600, though, so you're going to really want an OLED screen player to shell out that cash.

Unlike the iPod Photo, the Ovideon player has a built-in cable TV tuner and can record video.

Samsung Builds World's Biggest OLED TV 01/05/2005 02:07 PM
Today's technology announcements typically involve smaller and smaller components, computers and other gadgets, but Samsung Latest News about Samsung this week touted the "world's largest" television based on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology -- a 21-inch flat panel display.

While Samsung has addressed common OLED issues such as power and resolution with an active matrix (AM)-based OLED, analysts emphasized that the 21-inch screen was merely a demonstration and still a long way from the consumer market, where traditional liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma technology are among the hottest commodities available.

muziojm200.jpg imageA new Muzio from Korean manufacturer Jungsoft (promoting the hot new band, "Man and His Cymbals"), this one called the JM-200. Besides being sort of ugly, which is probably not a bullet-point feature, the Muzio supports USB Host functionality, SRS (some sort of surround sound magic?), OGG Vorbis support, FM radio, aluminum body, and recharging via USB. Plus, it has a two-color OLED screen, which probably isn't too much to get worked up over, but there you have it. I4U has some information, and apparently a test model, so expect a proper review in the next few days.

Did I mention it's a flash player? It's a flash player.
