08/14/2004 11:32 AMT-Mobile hasn't put out a press release, but is quietly spreading the
word about free Wi-Fi in Florida: With people losing homes or stuck
far away from home, T-Mobile has opened its hotspot service for free
in Florida through the end of the day on Monday. T-Mobile operates
service in Starbucks, Kinko's, Borders, and various airline lounges.
Wherever these locations are operating, the service will be free to
help folks communicate or just find out more about where they can go
next. Of course, these services require a computer or handheld, but
I'm guessing that people with that equipment in those locations will
be happy to help their fellow Floridians or fellow human beings....

From the Edge, Humanitarian Works
From the Edge, Humanitarian Works
07/25/2004 12:21 PM(This is also my Sund
ay column in the San Jose
Mercury News.)
They were soldiers and sailors, doctors and relief workers,
technologists and managers. Over the course of a few days, they
transformed a barren lava bed into a cutting-edge test bed of
communications and collaboration.
Their overarching goal, in a project dubbed "Strong Angel II" was
humanitarian: to help create a way for military and civilian
disaster-relief people to deal more efficiently with each other -- and
with the people who need assistance -- in the turmoil that follows
catastrophes.
I first wrote about the project two months ago, when it was
still in the planning stages. During three recent days on the site,
which was meant to approximate some of the harsh conditions aid
workers would find in the wake of war or natural disaster, I observed
much more than some brilliant technology. I saw how people with
poles-apart political perspectives could blend, in common purpose, to
achieve remarkable results.

War in Iraq: Not a Humanitarian
Intervention - Human Rights Watch
War in Iraq: Not a Humanitarian
Intervention - Human Rights Watch
01/26/2004 06:29 PM In sum, the invasion of Iraq failed to meet the test for a
humanitarian intervention. Most important, the killing in Iraq at the
time was not of the exceptional nature that would justify such
intervention. In addition, intervention was not the last reasonable
option to stop Iraqi atrocities. Intervention was not motivated
primarily by humanitarian concerns. It was not conducted in a way that
maximized compliance with international humanitarian law. It was not
approved by the Security Council. And while at the time it was
launched it was reasonable to believe that the Iraqi people would be
better off, it was not designed or carried out with the needs of
Iraqis foremost in mind. War in Iraq: Not a
Humanitarian InterventionHuman Rights Watch finds the post
fact rationale for the invasion wanting. It comes from their
World Report 2004 - Human Rights
and Armed Conflict, where other essays therefrom include:
Losing The Peace In
Afghanistan,
Sidelined: Human Rights
In Post-War Iraq and
"Glad to be
Deceived": the International Community and Chechnya, to name
but a few.

US sabotaging efforts to create

03/25/2005 06:37 PMCory Doctorow:
Donna sez, "In the aftermath of India being forced to adopt patent law
that quite literally kills people as a condition for joining the World
Trade Organization (WTO), US representatives at the World Intellectual
Property Organization (WIPO) are moving to counter efforts by
developing countries and numerous non-government organizations (NGOs)
to bring public-interest considerations -- like protecting human
health -- to its decision-making.
"Specifically, representatives have reportedly been circulating a
draft paper that attempts to reframe the problem, arguing that WIPO is
already addressing development issues and proposing merely a 'WIPO
Partnership Program' -- an Internet-based database to bring together
'donors and recipients of IP development assistance.'"

UNDER-REPORTED HUMANITARIAN EVENTS OF
2003
THE TEN MOST
UNDER-REPORTED HUMANITARIAN EVENTS OF
2003
02/10/2004 02:48 AM

Médecins Sans
Frontières
(Doctors Without Borders) recently released its list of the ten most
under-reported humanitarian events of 2003. The map above shows which
countries these events occurred in. Although the MSF site is temporarily down, you can read the
complete details of these stories here. The top 10 stories are:
- Tens of thousands seek refuge in Chad from wars in Sudan
and Central African Republic
- Ongoing oppression of civilians,
war and dislocation in Chechnya
- Tenth year of civil war in
Burundi lowers life expectancy to 40, causes massive
dislocation
- Three million displaced in Columbia,
infrastructure destroyed, violence & disease rampant, 'drug war'
ruins economy
- Daily terror and disease in Eastern Democratic
Republic of Congo pushes 20-year death toll past three
million
- Annual death toll from malaria in sub-Saharan Africa
reaches two million because $1 treatment is too
expensive
- Twelve years of violence, displacement, flooding and
drought make Somalia the world's most destitute
country
- Millions of refugees fleeing starvation and terror in
North Korea struggle in fear and deprivation in hostile
China
- 'Free' trade agreements deprive millions of AIDS victims
in Southern Africa and elsewhere of affordable treatment
- War,
displacement and lack of medical care produces massive malnutrition in
Ivory Coast and Liberia
Why aren't the media covering these stories? None of them is
physically
close to the West. None of them involves countries with resources of
strategic importance to the West. Almost all of them are ongoing, so
there is nothing 'new' to report each day. None of the people in these
countries has resorted to terrorist attacks against the West to bring
attention to our indifference to their plight. And all of them are
intractible problems, and therefore issues that those of us in the
West
would rather not know about.
