Free Software's new audio heir apparent

Free Software's new audio heir apparent 05/04/2004 03:55 AM
While proprietary OSs have been blessed by an onslaught of competing audio players, the Free Software world has remained relatively stagnant since XMMS was released in 1997. Recently, however, there has been a lot of development work surrounding Free Software media players. I ran across several audio programs worth looking into, including mpd, muine, and musikcube, but the most promising program I found is Rhythmbox.

Lossless encoding in iTunes

Lossless encoding in iTunes 04/28/2004 05:55 AM
Apple released iTunes 4.5 with a bunch of new features. One of the most interesting is lossless encoding. I'm looking forward to playing with that, even if it might not be terribly useful with my ~25GB mp3s and a 4GB iPod. Also new convert WMA files to play them on the iPod, a "Party Shuffle" rolling random playlist queue you can reorganize and a "Print CD inserts with album cover art" feature. After upgrading I recommend you hurry to the...

Free but shackled: The Java trap

Free but shackled: The Java trap 04/12/2004 06:04 AM
Editor's note: Stallman's timing with this piece is impeccable, and it dovetails nicely with the questions raised by Javalobby's Rick Ross in this article. If your program is free software, it is basically ethical--but there is a trap you must be on guard for. Your program, though in itself free, may be restricted by non-free software that it depends on. Since the problem is most prominent today for Java programs, we call it the Java Trap.

Free software Java platforms

Free software Java platforms 01/14/2003 02:28 PM

Richard Stallman is interested whether XSLT-process, my XSLT processor and debugger Emacs interface for the Saxon and Xalan XSLT processors runs on top of a free software JDK.

As far as I know Kaffe is one such free-software implementation of a Java virtual machine. There are many other implementations listed at Kaffe's Web site.

Does anybody have any experience with any of these in a real project? How much of the JVM functionality and the associated class libraries in JDK 1.3 are implemented? Can one run an XML parser and an XSLT processor like Saxon or Xalan on top of them?

Elemental Audio Systems on Tuesday introduced Neo dynium, a plug-in for RTAS, Audio Unit and VST-compatible audio software designed for compression and dynamics processing. Neodynium costs US$159 (and is available for $139 for a limited time). It works with Digidesign Pro Tools, Emagic Logic and other software. System requirements call for a G3 or faster with Mac OS X v10.2 or newer and a compatible host application.
