The lemmings go over the cliff, or the
inmates are driving the bus
The lemmings go over the cliff, or the
inmates are driving the bus
03/16/2003 04:52 AMAs you may be able to tell from the links that I have selected tonight
for the
Midnight Blog, I am
feeling fairly disheartened, too disheartened to do much original
writing. Once I again, I find that my writing, which starts off being
about technology and its effect on people, people and their use of
technology, my voyages of discovery on this crazy thing we call the
'Net, and the fun random stuff that crosses through my brain, ends up
focusing on politics, writ large. I don't know how
not to write
about politics, as we go to war.
I feel like I am living in Europe in the summer of 1914 after the
assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand, and I am watching the
troops mobilize across Europe for a quick fight to "show who is
right," and I know how it is
not going to turn out. History has
many more examples of wars with different outcomes than their
instigators' intended than it does of wars that turn out as planned.
It is not going to be a short glorious war, although the opening
stages may look like it. One billion Muslims may not rise up at once,
but they are not going to be happy with Christian occupation of the
Islamic heartland, and some of them will find nasty ways to express
their unhappiness. It is not going to be the war to end all wars, nor
will it make the world safe for democracy. Like all wars, it will
brutalize the participants and bystanders alike. In this case, both
sides will probably make use of advances in military technology to
commit new barbarities.
So it was particularly disheartening to read this brilliant article,
Just the Beginning, Is Iraq the opening salvo in a war to remake
the world? by
Robert Dreyfuss.
Dreyfuss looks at the intellectual godfathers who agitated for a war
against Iraq in the 1990's, neoconservatives like Richard Perle,
Michael Ledeen, Reuel Marc Gerecht and Douglas Feith, most of whom are
now in or associated with the Bush administration. As Dreyfus
documents using their own words, they see the war against Iraq as just
the first step in a war to remake the Middle East by militarily
attacking or otherwise overthrowing the governments of Iran, Syria,
and Saudi Arabia. They want to see a Middle East dominated by an
alliance between the United States and Israel, backed by overwhelming
military force. They either ignore the fact that being democratic does
not mean being pro-American policies, something that should be
self-evident to even the most ignorant person by now, or they are
clear that what they are after isn't democracy -- they would be just
as happy to have authoritarian pro-American rulers. And they are
prepared to have America go to war to install satraps for the new
American empire. Some quotes:
"I think we're going to be obliged to fight a regional
war, whether we want to or not," says Michael Ledeen, a former U.S.
national-security official and a key strategist among the ascendant
flock of neoconservative hawks, ... the very logic of the global war
on terrorism will drive the United States to confront an expanding
network of enemies in the region. "As soon as we land in Iraq, we're
going to face the whole terrorist network," he says, including the
Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic
Jihad and a collection of militant splinter groups backed by nations
-- Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia -- that he calls "the terror masters."
"It may turn out to be a war to remake the world," says Ledeen.
...
In their book, The War Over Iraq, William Kristol of The Weekly
Standard and Lawrence F. Kaplan of The New Republic write, "The
mission begins in Baghdad, but it does not end there. … We stand at
the cusp of a new historical era. … This is a decisive moment. … It is
so clearly about more than Iraq. It is about more even than the future
of the Middle East and the war on terror. It is about what sort of
role the United States intends to play in the twenty-first century."
...
"Nostalgia for the last shah's son, Reza Pahlavi … has again risen,"
says Reuel Marc Gerecht, a former CIA officer who, like Ledeen and
Perle, is ensconced at the AEI. "We must be prepared, however, to take
the battle more directly to the mullahs," says Gerecht, adding that
the United States must consider strikes at both Iran's Revolutionary
Guard Corps and allies in Lebanon. "In fact, we have only two
meaningful options: Confront clerical Iran and its proxies militarily
or ring it with an oil embargo." ...
Perle called on Israel to work with Turkey and Jordan to "contain,
destabilize and roll-back" various states in the region, overthrow
Saddam Hussein in Iraq, press Jordan to restore a scion of its
Hashemite dynasty to the Iraqi throne and, above all, launch
military assaults against Lebanon and Syria as a "prelude to a
redrawing of the map of the Middle East [to] threaten Syria's
territorial integrity." Joining Perle in writing the IASPS paper
were Douglas Feith and Wurmser, now senior officials in Bush's
national-security apparatus. ...
Chas Freeman, who served as U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the
Gulf War, thinks it will be a disaster. "This outdoes anything in
the march of folly catalog," he says. "It's the lemmings going over
the cliff."
Required Reading, especially for anybody who thinks this war
has anything to do with freedom.
Like Chas Freeman (a brilliant diplomat, one of the US' best), I am
convinced that the insane asylum inmates have taken over the bus that
was transporting them to the loony bin, and they are driving the bus
over the cliff. Unfortunately, we are on the bus too.
What is a concerned citizen to do? I I write my Congresswoman and
Senators, to support their opposition to the war, I write in this
weblog, but I fear that all this writing is just preaching to the
converted. The inmates have taken over the bus, and there doesn't seem
to be anything we can do to stop them. Instead, we just watch as the
bus goes over. I wonder if this is what it was like to watch the troop
trains scurry across Europe in August of 1914, knowing that death and
destruction were on their way, but feeling powerless to stop them.
Suggestions for meaningful action welcomed.

Records from the trash: rescued audio
Records from the trash: rescued audio
08/23/2004 06:36 AMCory Doctorow: Great LiveJournal post about one
person's garbage-picked record-album habits:
And if something is not my cup of tea, I try to pass it on. For
example, I'm not a huge fan of hip-hop, though I certainly like some
of it. Whenever I show up at my local with a pile of records I've
scavenged, Andre, one of the barmen, will probably say, sounding
genuinely offended, "How come you never get any for me?" A few months
ago, I spotted a gigantic stack of mostly hip-hop 12-inches awaiting
the Sanitation Dept. I grabbed a gigantic pile, as many as I could
carry, and made my way back to the bar, where I'd just seen him. "Hey,
Andre, I got a present for you…" I said, and dropped the discs
on the bar. "I'll be right back--there's more." It was worth it just
to see the startled look on his face. (Out of the whole bunch of maybe
250 I kept about 8 or 10.)
And then there are 78s, which most people don't have the machinery to
play. I've become interested in old 78rpm records ever since my father
gave me his collection of jazz records--as well as a turntable to play
them on--not long before his death. While there were some LPs in the
bunch--and some of those were amazing ones--the majority of the
collection consisted of jazz 78s, mostly from the 1940s, but some
dating back as early as 1929, which means I'm the third generation to
own them, since my father was only 15 that year and obviously acquired
those records secondhand.

Insurance Company Offering eBay
Insurance
11/17/2003 04:17 AMEveryone has heard about various eBay scams, and it's making people
increasingly nervous to buy or sell products on the site. So, along
comes an insurance company to try to help alleviate some of the
problems. They're offering
a form of eBay insurance, though it might not work the way
you would expect. It's targeted at eBay power sellers who are willing
to give up a small percentage of each sale for the right to display a
"BuySafe" logo. The logo is supposed to link to a site that will
verify that the logo has been approved. The insurance company
(Hartford) then insures that the buyer will either receive the good -
or the money they paid for the good will be returned. Of course,
they'll only handle claims that occur within 30 days of the sale, so
if the seller keeps telling you to hang on a little while longer, you
might be out of luck. Also, eBay offers their own service like this,
but the fine print is a killer. While the service promises to refund
up to $1,000, it
isn't
$1,000 per purchase, but $1,000 per seller. So, if (as did
happen) a seller with such a logo scams people out of a million
dollars, the company would split $1,000 among all the victims. Not
particularly comforting.

Tsunami tales
12/28/2004 05:19 PMBehind the doleful ticker tape of news stories about rising death
counts in Southern Asia, the Web is humming with firsthand accounts of
the tsunami's wave of destruction. One of the most compelling is a
string of ongoing dispatches from BBC reporters
in affected areas. On Tuesday, for instance, Roland Buerk in Sri Lanka
notes that tourists who were killed are being placed in mass graves
alongside native inhabitants who have also perished. "Apparently the
people who are burying them are trying to make a note of where the
graves are," he reports, "and if they find a passport they are taking
a note of that too, in the hope that perhaps one day those remains
might be returned to their home countries." Buerk's
personal account of when the tsunami first struck
him in a Sri Lanka beach house is also striking. "We swam out of the
room neck deep in water, forcing our way through the tables and chairs
in the restaurant and up into a tree."

Tales of Interoperability
03/06/2004 01:49 AMThe Register reports on a story that ran in a magazine called
Computing Which? that details failures to get standard Wi-Fi gear from
different manufacturers to interoperate: The editors tried to set up a
Linksys 802.11g router and a Netgear bridge but couldn't get the two
devices to interact. Eventually one Netgear help desk agent told the
writers the products could be incompatible. It doesn’t appear that the
original story is online so it's hard to know more about this trial.
It sounds as though the aim of the report was to test how easy or
difficult it is to set up wireless networks. The writers concluded
that it's too hard to use. It would be unfortunate if the industry has
a hard time attracting additional users because the products are
inoperable and difficult to use....

Tales of New Hotspots, Services
03/08/2004 11:15 PMWayport is just one of a handful of companies announcing new places to
find hotspots over the last week: Visitors to San Francisco's Moscone
Center will be able to get access from Wayport in common areas and
meeting rooms by the spring. Most of the conference center will be
covered by then with the rest coming later. A slightly different
clientele will likely be using a new hotspot in Philadelphia. The
mayor announced that the city will set up a hotspot in Love Park.
Apparently the park used to be filled with skateboarders who were
recently banned from using the park. But a compromise is being worked
on that will allow skateboarders during certain hours. They'll now be
able to tote their laptops to the park as well. In other city hotspot
news, San Jose is planning a big bash Thursday, March 11 at 11:00 at
the Circle of Palms to celebrate San Jose's downtown Wi-Fi service.
The mayor and members of the Silicon Valley Wireless Communications
Alliance will be there. Demonstrations of the service will be
available and the new Downtown Wi-Fi portal will be launched. Finally,
for those iPass customers who have been waiting for the iPass/T-Mobile
agreement to come to fruition, the wait is over. Starting today, iPass
users will see 4,200 T-Mobile hotspots in the iPass directory of
available access sites. IPass customers can also find more information
about those and all iPass broadband access sites now that iPass has
licensed a directory tool from JiWire. IPass customers will be able to
view maps of where the hotspots are and read detailed information
about the venues that offer the hotspots. The tool includes
information about all iPass broadband locations, wired or wireless,
around the globe. JiWire is a Wi-Fi Networking News partner. The
announcement about the T-Mobile sites isn't available online and
JiWire doesn't seem to have posted its news release on its site
