Varargs. Or, these days, stdargs. It's how C lets you define functions that take a variable number of arguments. Why do I hate it? Because, even though you're forced to view the argument list opaquely, there's no argument count! That is, the standard says the variable length argument list lives in a magic va_arg thingie, you must use the Magic Functions to get the individual arguments out, and you must have the magic ... signature to note varargs in the function declaration, but... the standard can't be bothered to mandate that an argument count is passed. This seems utterly mad....

One Less Reason Not To Switch 05/11/2004 01:45 PM

Novell has announced in a p ress release that they will release the Exchange Connector for Ximian Evolution, previously a $75/seat plugin, as open source.

Novell today announced its Connector for Microsoft* Exchange Server will be integrated into EvolutionTM 2.0 and made available as open source, beginning today with the current Connector 1.4. Evolution is Novell's award-winning e-mail and workgroup client for Linux* systems and is the most widely used collaboration suite on Linux. Evolution Connector allows Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003 users to easily manage their e-mail, calendars, group schedules, address books, public folders and tasks from Linux desktops.

I was thrilled to hear this. Evolution (particularly the current betas) is the equal of MS Outlook in features, but without many of the problems. The only downside was that you had to pony up the cash to natively connect with an Exchange server. My guess is that Novell feels that having this out there will speed the adoption of Linux, and that will provide them more revenue than they had been making by selling the plugin. A positive side effect of Ximian being purchased by Novell.

It appears that Novell has recognized their increasing irrelevance in their old niche, LAN products, and is jumping in to open source with both feet. Could this approach put them back into dominant position?

New York Times (reg req): Worke rs Assail Night Lock-Ins by Wal-Mart. The reason for Mr. Rodriguez's delayed trip to the hospital was a little-known Wal-Mart policy: the lock-in. For more than 15 years, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, has locked in overnight employees at some of its Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores. It is a policy that many employees say has created disconcerting situations, such as when a worker in Indiana suffered a heart attack, when hurricanes hit in Florida and when workers' wives have gone into labor.

I just loaded Blue Phone Menu on my laptop and had a friend call in. Holy cow is this a cool little app. It made my entire desktop blink on each ring, with a centered popup showing who was calling and what number they were using. I keep missing calls when I'm at my desk listening to music on my headphones so this is a killer app for me.

I also like the actual percentage battery life indicator on my desktop, it's something even my phone doesn't really tell me specifically (there's just a battery icon and estimated standby time left).

Earlier today, I happened upon old posts (never published) about Parisian restaurants. I decide to publish them, for no reason. My friend Alaina reads them and thinks, "Meg will like this Parisian food weblog. I will email it to her." She does. I read the email and then load up Chocolate & Zucchini in my browser. I am instantly in love, even before I see the entry for Oeuf Cocotte. I am now anxiously awaiting the time to read all the archives, and even more anxiously awaiting my (currently unscheduled) return to Paris. I've got a serious Paris jones. I've got a serious Chocolate & Zucchini crush.

Update!! Chocolate & Zucchini author Clotilde is a software engineer! But wants to leave it all behind for a cooking a career. She's my French twin!
