Are Video Games Good For Kids?

Are Video Games Good For Kids? 08/11/2004 05:30 PM
While it does seem that the anti-videogame folks blow the danger of video games way out of proportion, a new festival seems to be going in the other direction by claimin g video games are good for kids. It's such a broad statement that it has to be untrue. Certainly, some video games might be good for kids, in helping them deal with differe nt kinds of challenges, but it hardly seems like random anecdotal evidence (about all that's presented in the article) proves that video gaming is "good." For example, the article includes this sentence: "Dr Judy Robertson, of Edinburgh University, said some children had told her during computer games workshops that playing violent games did not result in violence in real life." Just because some kids say something doesn't necessarily make it true (even if it probably is true). If they really want to show this, wouldn't it make more sense to actually promotes the ways that video games can be helpful to kids, rather than just declaring it so? I'm all for real studies that show the positive impact games have for kids, but hyping up something without substance just makes the arguments seem weak.

It seems that every recent story about Atari has been about their attempts (in their modern form -- quite different from the original Atari) to make a killing on the nostalgia market, offering up classic games from years back to today's adults -- either on computers or (increasingly) on mobile phones. However, it appears that many feel the basic concepts of old Atari videogames are still valuable for game designers to learn -- resulting in a competition to design new games for the Atari 2600. Of course, there's one twist: the games needed to be created in 24 hours. While the story is amusing to read, what it really does is remind people that, despite all the amazing graphics found in today's game, a game is still about gameplay at its core -- which many of today's game designers seem to forget.

Cory Doctorow: Child's Play is EGM's recurring feature in which kids who play video games are sat down in front of game classics like Tetris and Adventure and Donkey Kong, then encouraged to deliver scathing hilarious commentary on the general suck of yesteryear's treasured games as compared to today's offerings.
Bobby: I've played this on my cell phone.

EGM: [Pointing to the humans on the ground] What do they look like?

Parker: They look like those little characters in the game Life, the little people you have to stick in your car.

EGM: Before this came out in compilations, we used to put quarters in arcade machines.

Parker: You wasted quarters on this?

EGM: Yeah.

Parker: That's so sad.

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids
12/27/2004 04:42 AM
Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being used by buyers to generate publicity, as well.

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PM
The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

I think it was Dave Winer who originally pointed out that the Government of Canada has has a bunch of RSS feeds. I subscribed to the main National News feed; it has some predictable puffery along the lines of “Prime Minister outlines bold vision for future of llama-farming,” but also has useful health alerts (there’s been some nasty stuff getting into the honey supply), plus The Daily, a regular snippet of statistics from Statistics Canada, which for some weird reason is a world leader in the field of country measurement. In today’s Daily I found some Crushin g statistics.
