HTTP over SOAP!?!?!?

HTTP over SOAP!?!?!? 05/01/2004 10:19 AM

Check out SOAP Resource Representation Header, a recent product of the XML Protocol Working Group. The idea is you stick a resource representation in a SOAP header. When I first read this, I checked the date to make sure it wasn’t April 1st...

Soap 04/14/2004 07:57 AM
Spent most of yesterday evening wandering aimlessly in the local IKEA, having a Tyler Durden moment. It all looked so ugly, and... empty. Void of all emotions. Like a cage, built of warm colors and gentle wood.

My hair is now orange-ish. The hairdresser next to the office said that it was good to do something else than always the plain, average cut to the plain, average engineers.

Perhaps this all is fighting, refusal to become average.

Maybe it is futile, and I am just lying to myself.

A presentation summarizing REST and SOAP by Peter Drayton, Program Manager (CLR), Microsoft.

The thesis for my talk was that this area of intersection (RESTful SOAP) is actually a good thing, as it provides an opportunity for SOAP to learn valuable architectural lessons from REST, and an opportunity for REST to benefit from SOAP's widespread acceptance among corporate developers.

REST vs SOAP

REST vs SOAP 03/11/2003 11:53 AM
My POW, FWIW:
The sweet spot is GET and POST of XML Infomation Sets. REST's content independence and SOAP's transport independence are simultaneously both key strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Both contain speculative features that have not been widely adopted (e.g., DELETE? Content-Negotiation?). The most underrated feature of SOAP is asynchronous messaging.

REST + SOAP is a powerful combination.

Don't throw out the SOAP with the

I showed up twice in print this week defending the WS-* technologies. First, in my column:
What goes around comes around. Three years ago, mine was one of the voices urging the Web services movement not to lose touch with the Web's essential nature, as embodied in the architectural style known as REST (Representational State Transfer). Perverse devil's advocate that I am, I'll now switch sides and urge the REST movement not to dismiss Web services and SOA (service-oriented architecture).

...

Now that the benefits of REST are abundantly clear, it's time to circle back and ask when REST isn't sufficient. The answer is that we'll need the kinds of capabilities WS-* provides as our point-to-point, client/server-like applications evolve into webs of communicating services.

We're mostly not there yet. On today's Web, security, asynchrony, reliability, routing, and proxying are, in general, aspects of the data communications layer. On tomorrow's Web they'll be aspects of the application layer, and we'll operate more like weavers of business processes than plumbers of networks.

We call that future Web a variety of names: grid, service bus, fabric. It will arrive, sooner or later, because it has to. Our challenge is to phase it in smoothly and incrementally, in ways that leverage and gracefully extend the RESTful Web. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]

SOAP Interop by Passage

SOAP Interop by Passage 07/30/2004 03:56 PM

I spent the last couple of days designing a web service API.  Last time I did that was more than six months ago, so I forgot a lot of little tricks and gotchas which I had to relearn.  To save you some trouble, here are some notes:

Getting Started

Currently, Visual Studio .NET is the best environment to start in for web service design.  So I started a Web Service project in VS.NET 2003, wrote my API classes in C#, and launched the service to get WSDL.  I also wrote a .NET client to polish the API.  BTW, VS.NET generates doc/lit style web service which is usually what you want.

I used only simple datatypes to avoid interop issues later.Complex datatypes should be used only if the benefits are clear because most binding generators will map them to classes which have to be instantiated on both side.  You might want to go easy on the Enums too because VS.NET uses enum symbol names as string literals.  I dislike verbose XML, so I used string flags (similar to fopen mode flags) instead as a compromise.

Interop by Passage

Now that I had a WSDL, I fed it to Apache Axis's WSDL2Java tool to generate Java bindings.  I ran into several interop issues with Axis 1.1 so I ended up using Axis 1.2beta2 after a few hours of agony.  Since the service I was designing will be implemented in Java, I generated server-side bindings first and hosted them in Tomcat.

Once the Axis-based service was running, I added a Web Reference to it in my C# client and made sure results from the Axis-based service matched the .NET-based service.  Note that at this point, you have two WSDL, one from each side.  You'll eventually have to let one of them go depending on where the service will be hosted in a Java web server or ASP.NET, but it's nice to have both to clients in other languages.
