A.C.L.U. Hypocrisy
A.C.L.U. Hypocrisy
12/22/2004 01:19 AM Excerpted from the nytimes (free registration required):
The American Civil Liberties Union is using sophisticated
technology to collect a wide variety of information about its members
and donors in a fund-raising effort that has ignited a bitter debate
over its leaders' commitment to privacy rights. Some
board members say the extensive data collection makes a mockery of
the organization's frequent criticism of banks, corporations and
government agencies for their practice of accumulating data on people
for marketing and other purposes. Daniel S. Lowman,
vice president for analytical services at Grenzebach Glier &
Associates, the data firm hired by the A.C.L.U., said the software
the organization is using, Prospect Explorer, combs a broad range of
publicly available data to compile a file with information like an
individual's wealth, holdings in public corporations, other assets
and philanthropic interests. The issue has attracted
the attention of the New York attorney general, who is looking into
whether the group violated its promises to protect the privacy of its
donors and members. "It is part of the A.C.L.U.'s
mandate, part of its mission, to protect consumer privacy," said
Wendy Kaminer, a writer and A.C.L.U. board member. "It goes against
A.C.L.U. values to engage in data-mining on people without informing
them. It's not illegal, but it is a violation of our values. It is
hypocrisy."

Community Values, Corporate Profit and Pornography
"Popular culture isn't popular because members of the "tax-hiking,
government-expanding, latte-drinking, sushi-eating, Volvo-driving, New
York Times-reading, body-piercing, Hollywood-loving left-wing freak
show" (to borrow a line from a campaign ad this year) are the only
customers. It's because there is an unquenched thirst for it, and the
corporate profiteers (who are members of and contributors to both
political parties) see a nationwide market for it." What will we tell
the children?

Hitler imagery, neither side deigns to tell the whole story.

05/19/2004 07:43 AMNY Times: White House Is Trumpeting Programs It Tried to Cut. Like many
of its predecessors, the Bush White House has used the machinery of
government to promote the re-election of the president by awarding
federal grants to strategically important states. But in a twist this
election season, many administration officials are taking credit for
spreading largess through programs that President Bush tried to
eliminate or to cut sharply.

On the role of government. The Houston Chronicle had a
s
tory (404 now) on then governor Bush's 1999 law giving hospitals
the power to remove life support of the terminally ill. The decision
hinges on the prognosis and, of course, the patient's ability to pay.
The law recently gave power to the Texas Children's Hospital to
remove the breathing tube of a 6-month old infant
o
ver his mother's wishes. What do people who support Bush's
intervention in the Schiavo case think about Bush's Futile Care Law?

Oracle, Hypocrisy and Opinion Laundering
05/09/2004 12:57 PMOn April 27, a Washington lobbying organization, the Association for
Competitive Technology, or ACT, announced it had signed up two new
members from Silicon Valley. One was VeriSign. The other was Oracle.
Companies work with trade and lobbying organizations all the time. But
this announcement, by a group best known for backing Microsoft in its
antitrust battles, was surprising. Only four years ago, Oracle had
done its best to discredit the organization it was now joining.

Antitrust Biting Oracle; Hypocrisy

02/11/2004 09:30 AMIn announcing and defending the Microsoft sellout, Ashcroft, who is
carrying out President Bush's policy, has used high-sounding policy
principles as his motive even though there plainly were political
reasons as well. For them to now discover the virtues of antitrust
would look like a totally political move with overtones of retribution
-- hardly the first time from this crowd, of course. But no one should
believe they've suddenly discovered that it's a good idea to have a
serious competition policy for the technology industry.

Hurston Plays Expose Copyright Hypocrisy
Hurston Plays Expose Copyright Hypocrisy
01/16/2004 11:28 AMOver on Siva Vaidhyanathan's blog, Peter Hirtle rightly nails
the Library of Congress for its hypocritical stance on copyright.
Library of Congress Having it Both Ways!
"Did you see the following press release from the Library of
Congress's American Memory project? They are crowing about the fact
that they have made important unpublished plays by Zora Neale Hurston
available through their web site.
I (like them) think this is a terrific thing - but they can only do
this because the plays were registered for copyright as unpublished
manuscripts. The copyright was then never renewed.
Since that time, and with the active support of the Copyright
Office (in the Library of Congress), registration has been removed as
a requirement for copyright and copyright term has been lengthened. If
the law as it stands today was in effect when the plays were written,
these plays could not be made available until 2031." [SIVACRACY.NET]
And let's not forget that most of these plays were lost to the
world until 1997 when they were rediscovered in the Copyright Deposit
Drama Collection. If they'd been buried under copyright law, we
wouldn't even know about them until (at best) 2031.
