The end of the beginning

The end of the beginning 05/01/2004 03:15 AM

As 10 countries sign up to join the EU, it's worth remembering that this is not the end of a process, just a station along the way.

A new beginning 03/11/2003 09:43 AM

A picture named usaSmall.gifRemember what it was like on the day of the school play? We had rehearsed and rehearsed, then the dress rehearsal, then the big day. I remember lying in bed in the morning so incredibly excited. That day had a special quality no other day had. Finally the day I had anticipated for so long -- it was here! After this nothing would be the same. Today has that feel to me. The house that's so empty, still feels like my house, its emptiness feels like a betrayal, by me, of it. That looms large, I think because I'm still in it. I had enough years to explore every nook and cranny that I cared to explore. I wanted more adventure. Later today, around noon, I'll drive to Reno for the first leg of my cross-country drive. No more rehearsals, today it's the real thing.

I'm not sure what this means, but Microsoft is dumping Intel and switching processors in its next-generation Xbox. Apparently, Microsoft wanted to get in on the action, although most think the company is simply picking the PowerPC platform. This means the end of people turning hacked Xboxes into cheap Linux computers — something Microsoft detests. Now we can turn them into cheap Macs, I guess!

Beginning Aristotle 06/26/2004 12:59 PM
I'm excited. I haven't read Aristotle in 25 years, but I pulled down The Metaphysics and Randall's "Aristotle" this morning, because for the book I'm pre-writing, I want to remember what he says about genera and species. In particular, I'm curious whether his nested view of categories explicitly reflects the way political entities are nested: animal contains human the way Greece contains Athens. I thumbed through both books for about two minutes after blowing the dust off of them, and had a flash of why I used to love Aristotle. He believed that careful thought could understand the world,...

iTrip mini Available for Pre-order 06/02/2004 08:56 AM

prod_itrip_mini.jpg imageLooks like Griffin Technology has released a version of the iTrip specifically for the iPod mini which they're calling, unsurprisingly, the 'iTrip mini.' The iTrip is an FM transmitter for the iPod which lets you broadcast to pretty much any FM station you want via a sometimes kludgey 'frequencies as songs' interface. No matching colors, though, as the iTrip mini will only come in white, topping your mini like a stick of deodorant. Still, I have an iTrip for my iPod, and besides the aforementioned interface weirdness, it definitely gets the job done. Griffin is taking pre-orders now for $40 and expects to ship in July.

Griffin ships iTrip mini 06/11/2004 08:11 AM
Griffin Technology on Friday announced that it is shipping its iTrip mini, an FM transmitter designed to work with the iPod mini. The US$39.99 device attaches to the top of the iPod mini and enables users to play their music through nearby FM receivers in cars, homes and elsewhere. The iTrip mini can broadcast on any available frequency, and is tuned from the iPod mini itself. It uses no batteries, drawing power from the iPod mini, and powers itself off automatically when not in use. When Griffin first announced the iTrip mini they said it would ship in July, so this news comes a month earlier than expected.

itrip_mini_1.jpg imageGood news for everyone that pre-ordered an iTrip mini, the FM transmitter from Griffin Technology that is designed specifically to work with the iPod mini -- it's shipping a month early. How often does that happen? Well, I mean, I guess there was that time when the solids residue from that batch of 5,6-MeO-MIPT recrystallized faster than we expected from the EtOAc/hexane, but I guess, yeah, that was sort of a different trip altogether.

So, apparently, there's a band... from America... named Barcelona. They're no longer together, but when they were crankin' out the tunes, they recorded "I Have The Password To Your Shell Account." Wow. That's pretty darn geeky. Their style totally reminds me of another semi-favorite of mine, FreezePop. Props to a new friend, Scott, for pointing the way. Actually, I don't know if I can call him a friend yet, but I'm totally in love with his Special Edition LP set of The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack. He must trust me, as he lent me one of his Barcelona CDs. Or did he? Because, to my knowledge, Lent is over....
