Matching newlines in JavaScript
Matching newlines in JavaScript
09/20/2004 04:59 PMJust a quick note: the . character
in a JavaScript regular expression will never match a newline
character. If you want to match any character including newlines you
can use the [\s\S] character class
instead, which means "any character that's either whitespace or not
whitespace".
This differs from both Python and Perl, where regular expression
flags can be used to alter the behaviour of the . character (re.DOTALL and /s
respectively).

look ar a book on Amazon, they should have a little box that says "If
you like this book, you might like these blogs..."
Better yet, let people upload their OPML file to their Amazon
profile. Then they could have a box that said, "People who bought
this book are most likely to be subscribed to these RSS feeds..."
Got this idea while perusing the Share Your OPML app over at scripting.com.

Mixing and matching on one's public page
Mixing and matching on one's public page
06/06/2005 12:13 AMThough the stylesheet is still rather conservative, and the range
of external modules still limited; take a look at my public
page on Tribe.net (below.) Imagine this was your "About Me" page.
Notice that we're meshing in de.licio.us and RSS feeds, giving our
end-users the ability to put up more than one 'desktop image' up into
their interface and combining internal and external blogs.
We're also displaying different combinations of friends and groups
- and in general - fulfilling the 'customization' requirement of
DLAs.
This is what we all need - every DLA, portal, social network and
blogging tool around. The ultimate "About Me" page. Now that Tribe
has set the new standard, all other systems will be compared to
this.

I especially like this approach as it allows one to add in
additional modules - without fundamentally changing the UI.
Sure it looks allot like MyYahoo, and it could use three columns,
and sure we'd like sexier stylesheets and Tribe still needs a better
header - but that all will come with time. It's the ease of use and
power quotient that I'm excited about right now.
It's taken years - but the Tribe team: Paul Martino, Brian Lawler,
Chris Vale, Elliot Loh (among otehrs) - and the product marketing
dudes - Chris Law and Gary Chao - have finally figured it out.
It's called product iteration - and it's what we did with
VideoWorlks - for five years till we got Director - just right.

Hoping to cash
in on the iPod mini craze (and you know, I've heard more stupid ideas
before), Kyocera is selling five new color-matched versions of the
four-megapixel Finecam SL400R cameras. Color-matched, that is, to the
iPod mini. And while I'm sure they'll be super hot (at least to those
fashion-forward iPod adopters), getting one into the States may not be
so easy -- the cameras will only be available in Apple's Ginza store
and the online Apple Store (but for Japan-shipping only? Unknown!)

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail
Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail
05/26/2004 01:35 PMLast month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by
a California politician to create a law that would
ban
Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely
optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including
those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to
explain how email works, and have convinced her to
tone down
the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the
anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In
other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how
pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face
by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a
bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the
content of your emails to put in advertising.

RSS, updated items, and links
RSS, updated items, and links
12/29/2004 08:29 PM
One of the big differences between RSS and email is that RSS items can
change.
So the question for any newsreader developer is this: what changes
should trigger an item being marked as unread?
Specifically, today I’m thinking about a subset of that
question: changes to
elements.
Take this hypothetical case:
1. An item looks like this:

A title

A description

2. Then the feed updates, and the
element changes:

A title

A description

The question: should it be marked as unread or not?
Right now, NetNewsWire marks it as unread. My policy has always been
to err on the side of marking things unread—on the assumption
that, otherwise, you might miss something important.
(Actually, NetNewsWire marks it as updated, and you have a pref that
says whether or not to mark updated items as unread. Which most people
leave turned on.)
The RSS 2.0 spec
doesn’t address the issue of when to consider an item
significantly changed—and I’m not sure the spec
should say anything about that.
Of course, I don’t want new prefs or special cases, I want the
best policy.
Perhaps changes to
s should not cause an item to be
marked unread. What do you think?

On a related topic...
People have often asked me why we can’t use the

element as a unique identifier and permalink for news items.
It can’t be a unique identifier because it may change. The New
York Times feeds, for instance, change their
s frequently:
they include a query string that allows you to get past the
registration system, and that query string changes. (It’s the
New York Times feeds that prompted the discussion above about ignoring

changes.)

s can’t be permalinks because there is nothing that
says that a
has to be a permalink—it could point to
another site entirely.
Which is why I always ask people to use
s in their feeds,
so we can identify items, so we can know when an item is an updated
version of a previous item.
(About Atom there is one thing I adore: that guids—called

s there—are mandatory. I wish they could be
mandatory in RSS too.)
Multiple-enclosures on RSS items?
Multiple-enclosures on RSS items?
12/22/2004 01:10 AM
Disclaimer: These are my thoughts, not spec
text.
This question comes up from time to time, and I've resisted
answering it directly, thinking that anyone who really read the spec
would come to the conclusion that RSS allows zero or one enclosures
per item, and no more. The same is true for all other sub-
elements of item, except category, where multiple elements are explicitly allowed.
The spec refers to "the enclosure" in the singular. Regardless, some
people persist in thinking that you may have more than one enclosure
per item.
Okay, let's play it out. So if I have more than one enclosure
per item, how do I specify the publication date for each enclosure?
How do I specify the title, author, a link to comments, a description
perhaps, or a guid? The people who want multiple enclosures suggest
schemes that are so complicated that they're reduced to hand-waving
before they get to the spec, which I would love to read, if it could
be written. Some times some things are just too hard to do. This is
one of them.
And there's a reason why it's too hard. Because you're throwing
out the value of RSS and then trying to figure out how to bring it
back. There's no need for items any more, so you might as well get rid
of them. At the top level of channel would be a series of enclosures,
and then underneath each enclosure, all the meta-data. Voila, problem
solved. Only what have you actually solved? You've just re-created
RSS, but instead of calling the main elements "item" we now call them
"enclosure".
Sometimes linear thinking leads you to a dead-end, and this is
one of those times, imho. You end up in a torus, there's no wall that
says "you may go no further" but somehow you keep going in circles,
chasing your tail, re-inventing RSS, when there's absolutely no need
to.
So people ask how will we fit show notes into RSS? Maybe we
won't. When you get into show notes, think outlines, and think about
linking MP3s into outline structures. I think this has more potential.
I could be wrong of course (not joking).
