A Digital Divide

A Digital Divide 08/27/2004 02:03 PM
It would be better for consumers if Apple began licensing its digital rights management software, only because the iTunes Music Store will not be able to lock up access to all the copyrighted music in the world. But RealNetworks' conetnion that Apple is stifling freedom of choice is self-serving. By New York Times (via MyAppleMenu)

Digital Divide Among Kids Is Shrinking

Digital Divide Among Kids Is Shrinking 09/17/2004 11:55 AM
For all the talk about the "digital divide" and how poorer kids weren't getting access to the internet that would be important to their ability to get jobs in the future, it looks like much of the problem is going away. Nearly all children in the US now have some form of internet access, though, there still are differences in how they access it. It shouldn't be much of a surprise to find out that wealthier families are more likely to have internet access at home for their kids. Either way, this is clearly a positive step.

It seems that every other week a report comes out saying that the digital divide is a problem, followed the next week by a study saying that the digital divide isn't a problem or is going away. This must be the second week. The UN has put out a report saying that the digital divide among nations is decreasing much faster than anyone anticipated. While there are still gaps, the study found that, even in many very poor nations, people did have access to things like a telephone, if they needed to use it. Still, that doesn't mean the people are actually using the technology, but it does suggest that the problem isn't one of getting infrastructure built.

China Gets Wired... But Digital Divide
Exists

China Gets Wired... But Digital Divide
Exists
07/21/2004 02:54 AM
The internet is growing in China, as they now have 87 million people online, though they are apparently connecting through just 36.3 million internet connected computers. The number of Chinese netizens puts them firmly in second place, though just about everyone expects them to take first place before long. That 87 million represents just 6.6% of the population, which may point to a bigger issue. While the US worries about the "digital divide," it looks like a much bigger issue in China. Internet usage is much more common in more developed areas, and many seem worried that less developed areas will get left even further behind. While the Chinese government has tried to go online, the study found that most such sites are unused, and many government officials prefer not to use their own websites. None of this is particularly surprising, but it's still interesting to see the data.

Majorium’s Integrated Multicast Learning technology makes training a habit rather than an event. It provides trainers with a seamless platform to deliver blended, effective employee training. Companies find Trainer’s Choice attractive because of its value pricing: $ 75.00 per employee. What makes the Trainer’s Choice Program more appealing is it can be configured to meet employees’ needs. Training is delivered continuously over three months, where lessons are actively reinforced and cross-linked. Knowledge is strengthened through blended training activities that are directly applied to the workplace. [PRWEB Aug 6, 2004]

Across the great divide

Across the great divide 09/04/2004 09:18 PM
I first pointed to this stunning Valdis Krebs infographic back in March 2004, when the New York Times published it. Krebs has long been fascinated with the clusters that emerge from an analysis of Amazon's related-purchase data. I was reminded of his chart the other day when I heard this exchange (Real, 1 min, 40 sec) between Terri Gross and Norman Podhoretz, which includes this quote:
I have almost no friends any longer who are liberal, and I suspect this is true of most people on both sides of the divide. Since the sixties, the polarization has become more intense, and there are fewer and fewer friendships that can be sustained across the divide in this country.

What religious differences used to be, and aren't any more (in our world, not the Muslim world), political differences have become. They've acquired a kind of religious intensity, and are tinged with a kind of intolerance that used to characterize religious differences. [Norman Podhoretz, inteviewed by Terri Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, Real, 20 min.)
Having lived on both sides of the chasm -- he was a radical liberal before he became a founder of neoconservativism -- Podhoretz seems to have a rare appreciation of the great divide. I suspect the majority of us, not having lived on both sides, lack that same gut-level appreciation. ...
