Gigabit switch

Gigabit switch 03/14/2005 06:18 PM
Since we got new servers we actually ran out of switch ports. We have an 8-port gigabit Dell switch BizRate gave us last year that we use for our internal network. We have another ancient 22 port old Cisco 29xx 100Mbit switch we use for our external network and (with a VLAN) for some of the internal network). They are both so full we had to unplug things we weren't using enough to get the new servers in yesterday. I'd...

Dewayne on the Gigabit Initiative

Dewayne on the Gigabit Initiative 09/07/2004 02:34 PM
Today at the Berkman Center, Dewayne Hendricks of the Dandin Group led a 1.5 hr presentation/discussion of California's Gigabit or Bust Initiative and the general state of massive wifi connectedness. Dewayne has been setting up large (really large) wireless networks in Tonga and Mongolia where the regulatory environment is - let's say - looser than here in the US. Thus, he can put technologies to the test that are caught in political bear traps in this country. Fascinating. The gigabit initiative intends to deliver 1 gigabit access to all Californians by 2010. Dewayne is convinced that only wireless will do...

Fiber Optics vs. Gigabit Ethernet

Fiber Optics vs. Gigabit Ethernet 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
For nearly two decades, twisted-pair cable has been the medium of choice for office networking and has evolved to accommodate ever-increasing data speeds. In recent years, however, fiber-optic cable has gained popularity because of its high-bandwidth capacity, reliability and immunity to electrical and radio-frequency interference and crosstalk.

1.4mm Thick Gigabit Ethernet Cable

1.4mm Thick Gigabit Ethernet Cable 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

flat_cable.jpgFlat network cables aren't anything new, but I'm pretty sure ones like this are. Japanese accessory king Elecom today announced the "LD-VAPF/SV05" network cabling, coming in at 1.4mm thick. With such a thin cable, you can run it pretty much anywhere you like; I guess it would work particularly well under carpet, in doorways, or as a new type of karate belt. The Cat5 standard cables support up to 1000BASE-T, and are reinforced with aluminium.
