JBoss?s Fleury: The benevolent dictator
is good for Java
04/30/2004 07:01 PM

JBoss is best-known as the provider of the JBoss open source application server, and it has also been known for having disagreements with Sun about licensing of Java test suites. But those disagreements were resolved in 2003. InfoWorld Editor at Large Paul Krill met with JBoss CEO and Founder Marc Fleury during the ?J2EE Kickoff Event? earlier this week in San Francisco to discuss the company and open source issues.

Benevolent "Virus" Helps Reveal the Hidden Web
http://www.syllabus .com/article.asp?id=9680

Perennial problem: locating data in the "deep Web." Ingenious solution: combine the Open Archives Initiative mission to promote interoperability standards with pervasive Apache server modules and add a nice infectious (but benevolent) virus. Thanks to funding by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the melding of these three concepts is helping make it
possible to find more treasures on the hidden Web. It's elegantly simple says Phil Long, Ph.D., of the Academic Computing Enterprise at MIT. First you make something for a host that is widely distributed in the population. Then you make it incredibly easy to transmit it symbiotically -- that is, in a way that does not detract from the host's general health, but adds capability. Nearly 64% of Web sites worldwide use the Apache server, which allows programmers to launch new features through easy-to-install modules. The modules to be launched to help tap hidden databases are driven by the Open Archives Initiative's Protocol for Metadata Harvesting, based on the open standards HTTP and XML. So the host is the Apache server, and the "viral" package to distribute is the high-performance federated digital search service implemented as an Apache module, mod_OAI. This has been added to Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Fist of Fleury

Fist of Fleury 05/23/2004 04:52 AM

Looks like Marc Fleury, JBoss boss and a world class bacon (?!?), is on the grill again.  He is being accused of praising JBoss and trashing competitors anonymously at well known Java websites like TheServerSide.  What a character he is.  I wouldn't be surprised if he makes an appearance in the next Tarantino movie.

Revisit Funnyside of Open Source for a classic taste of Fleury.

Update:

BileBlog had all the juicy bits on this story which surfaced when TheServerSide forum added a feature that lookups posts by IP address.  Ouch!  It looks like rest of the JBoss gang is into masquerading as well.  I even recognize some of the supposedly bogus characters (underlined):

... Marc Fleury. Who else does the slimy little fleury have hidden away in this too-large-for-one-person personality of his? Why, none other than our friend Arun Patel! Arun, for those of you unfamiliar with TSS, posts incredibly offensive polemics that happen to exactly mirror the unspoken thoughts of a certain JBoss cult. ...

So, who else posts from that IP? Well, we have James Hardy. James' posts are often of the 'I'm sane but lets face it, JBoss rule' variety, as opposed to another on that list of deranged psychopaths, Chip Tyler. Chippie here will eagerly pipe in in any number of threads to say how much CDN suck, as well as how every move JBoss makes is intelligent and wise. There are literally dozens of other accounts that show how widespread this behaviour is. The only thing they have in common is a surprising love and admiration for all things JBossy, and disdain and abuse for all things non-JBossy.

Needless to say, Ben Sabrin and the majority of the JBoss folks are all on the trail too. So while it's impossible to actually draw lines between the fakes and their puppetmasters, it's very very easy to spot the group of nefarious rumprangers who have embarked on this laughably incompetent marketing exercise. Having said that, some of the linkages are very clear and easy to follow to individuals who happen to not work in the same turdfactory as the fleurys do. Bill Burke has the highly dubious honour of also being Joe Murray, famous for making noises to the effect of 'Mike Spille doesn't exist!'. Let's see you uuhmm and err your way out of this one Billy! Marc'll have you back in that gimp suit pretty sharpish if you keep being this sloppy.

The saddest part about all this is that the most likely outcome is for these posters to now ensure they use a different IP when posting, to disguise the trail more effectively. I'm sure the very notion of 'gosh, maybe we should let our software do the talking instead of using underhanded tactics like these' is heretical in that camp.

Tiger vs. Dictator

Tiger vs. Dictator 03/06/2004 02:02 AM

I have updated my Coup d'eta post with a picture you might enjoy.

dictator 0.9.4 (Default branch)

dictator 0.9.4 (Default branch) 04/19/2005 04:19 AM
Screenshot Dictator is a program for on-screen reading of text files, developed with the intention of making it easier to read some of the fine electronic texts available on the net, such as those produced by The Gutenberg Project. The problem with these texts is that reading them on screen is not particularly pleasant and printing them out is even less pleasant. Dictator employs the Rapid Serial Visual Projection (RSVP) method of displaying words consecutively in the same place, at a user-controllable rate. In theory, this method prevents unconscious re-reading of adjacent text and decreases the tendency of the reader to oralise the text, allowing for increased reading speeds. It also allows the use of larger fonts for text display which improves text clarity.
Changes:
This release adds file history, customisable text filters (e.g. open PDF, DOC, RTF), URL open, customisable Web references, simple text search, navigation by paragraph, the ability to open from clipboard (wxPython 2.5 only), some help documentation, a multiple size icon set for Windows, and the ability for text to wrap in wxSTC.

Dictator 0.9.2 (Default branch) 04/11/2005 03:52 AM

The problem with these texts is that reading them on screen is not particularly pleasant and printing them out is worse. In theory, this method prevents unconscious re-reading of adjacent text and decreases the tendency of the reader to oralise the text, allowing for increased reading speeds.
Changes:
All colours and fonts are now customisable. Font dialogs are now disabled in full-screen mode with wxPython 2.4 due to problems. A layout bug was fixed in the bookmarks dialog. Rate change at very slow speeds was fixed to avoid delayed response. Old configuration files are now ignored if they are incompatible.
