Erik Davis on Led Zeppelin IV
Erik Davis on Led Zeppelin IV
03/17/2005 03:56 AMDavid Pescovitz:
BB pal
Erik Davis, author of
Techngnosis, has just published a brilliant short book riffing on the
magick and mystery behind Led Zeppelin's nameless "Runes Album," AKA
the one with Stairway to Heaven. I read this foray into pop occulture
in one sitting and it's classic Davis--fun, informative, and damned
funny. As always he tempers his deep knowledge of mysticism with a
devilish smirk. The book is part of publisher Continuum's inspired
33 1/3 series of pocketbooks where edgy
writers are paired with classic albums ranging from the Beach Boys'
Pet Sounds to Radiohead's OK Computer. (For example, former Mondo 2000
and BookForum editor Andrew Hultkrans indulges his passion for Love's
Forever Changes.) From Davis's book:
It must be said that many rock bards name Black Sabbath rather than
Zeppelin as the true font of heavy metal. After all, Sabbath pack an
unparalleled eldritch punch, and in many ways represent a purer source
of bane: the riffs more consistently morbid, the stance more prole,
and the whole shtick more out-of-nowhere and hence more monstrous,
more contrary to nature. But Zeppelin had a vaster palette, a more
richly perfumed darkness; perhaps most importantly, they sold way more
records. Like all origin stories, this one depends on your frame of
reference, your own lineages, your taste. It’s very much like
the question of who deserves blame for the genre of heroic fantasy,
whose multi-volume sagas of dwarf-lords and magic blades continue to
clog the SF sections of bookstores. Hardcore sword-and-sorcery buffs
will rightly name the pulp peregrinations of Robert E. Howard’s
Conan, while more literary types will nominate, with equal
justification, Tolkien’s "Lord of the Rings". Sabbath is Conan;
Zeppelin is "Lord of the Rings." But Zeppelin is a special sort of
"Lord of the Rings," one where you get to root for both
sides.

Erik Davis
sent along this inside scoop on the film adaptation of Philip K.
Dick's "A Scanner Darkly":
"Well, I got some tasty news for all your Dickheads out
there. Richard Linklater is indeed making PKD’s A Scanner
Darkly. And this, I suspect, will be it: the first “real”
“authentic” PKD movie. Having read (and advised on) two
versions of Linklater’s script, I can say that, while the film
updates the historical vibe from paranoid 70s to paranoid 00s, the
script is dark and tart, funny and faithful.
As has been reported, the cast is topped with Keanu Reaves as Bob
Arctor, the Orange County narc who is assigned to spy on himself.
Linklater has been planning this project for years; it was
Reaves’ interest in the story that finally got the ball rolling.
(One cannot fault the guy’s taste.) With an appropriateness at
once amusing and touching, the rest of the cast includes some of
Hollywood’s more notorious dopers: Winona Ryder, Robert Downey
Jr., Woody Harrelson, and Rory Cochrane. (OK, I don’t know
anything about Rory’s personal dispositions, but he sure looks
like he’s scraped the barrel of party.)
As a special treat, the film will be animated by the same genius
team whose digital rotoscoping helped make Waking Life one of the few
American film masterpieces of the new millennium. These are definitely
the guys you want to bring Bob Arctor’s scramble suit to life.
PKD wrote a lot of great books, but A Scanner Darkly is the one I
would hand to a literary professor. It’s atmosphere of
surveillance, creepy drugs, and what you could call
“scopo-phrenia” is where we are. Hats of to R. Linklater
for making sure that PKD’s peculiar posthumous sojourn in
Hollywood will not end with Paycheck."

Erik Davis
sends us this exclusive bit of insider insight into the Hollywood
adaptation of Philip K. Dick's surreal SF novel "A Scanner Darkly":
"This spring, I had the opportunity to read and consult
on Richard Linklater’s screenplay for Philip K. Dick’s A
Scanner Darkly, which is set to start filming this July. As I love
many of Linklater’s films, this was a great honor, although much
less funny than the New Yorker’s description of me as a
“Dick expert.” Expert or no, I can tell you that I have
every reason to believe that Linklater’s film will be what
Dickheads everywhere have been waiting for: the first
“real” “authentic” PKD movie. While the film
updates the historical vibe from paranoid 70s to paranoid 00s, the
script is dark and tart, funny and faithful. Nearly all the dialogue
is drawn from the novel, and the few changes sharpen Dick’s
themes rather than squelch them. Linklater has kept the story dark,
and haunted by rumors of God.
As has been reported, Keanu Reaves will play Bob Arctor, the Orange
County narc who goes schizo after being assigned to spy on himself.
Linklater has been planning this project for years; it was
Reaves’ interest in the story that finally got the ball rolling.
As has been already noted, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr., Woody
Harrelson, and Rory Cochrane round out the cast, though it also needs
to be mentioned that these are some of the most famous druggies in
Hollywood. Actually, I don’t know anything about Rory’s
personal habits, but he sure spouted convincing cannabinoid bon mots
in Dazed & Confused.
During my time at Linklater’s pine-forested getaway pad
outside of Austin, which features a pagoda, a huge stone tower, and
many pinball machines, I got to meet the genius team whose digital
rotoscoping helped make Waking Life one of the few masterpieces of the
new millennium. These are definitely the guys you want to bring Bob
Arctor’s scramble suit to life."
