Q&A: Unique Program Aims to Make
Technology Easier for Small Businesses
04/30/2004 04:35 PM

The small business segment is a unique audience with special requirements. In order for technology geared to small businesses to be accessible and effective, it must be affordable, easy to manage and incorporate support programs. A strategic relationship recently announced in London between Microsoft and British Telecommunications (BT), one of Europe's leading providers of telecommunications services, aims to transform the quality and delivery of technology available to small businesses in the UK. A market test of the new initiative in two regions of Scotland will target this currently underserved segment of the business community and seek to narrow the technology gap between large and small businesses.

“Father” of Mac platform aims to make
computers easier to use
01/05/2005 07:26 PM
Jef Raskin, credited with being the “father” of the Macintosh computer and former Apple employee #31, has recently obtained $2 million in start up funding to make computers easier to use. Raskin is featured today in an article by the California-based Pacifia Tribune. "We formed the Raskin Center for Humane Interface," he says. "And we have been funded by a multi-national corporation for $2 million. Our plan is to work out of this office to show the world how to make computers much easier to use." Raskin wrote the groundbreaking book, "The Humane Interface," which has now been translated into dozens of languages and is part of most university computer courses. The new business is an offshoot of the philosophical work begun in the book. Raskin's concept involves "unified" computer programs. Instead of multiple applications that must be "opened" before they can be used, Raskin's model allows a computer user to simply shift between word processing, spread sheets, photo manipulation, and just about everything else through simple "command sets." His new project also involves his son, Aza, a 20-year-old college student. With an eye to the reality of the business world, Aza says the purpose of the Raskin Center for Humane Interface won't be to put computer companies out of business, it will "save them money in technical support." The Raskins say they are confident that the Raskin Center for Humane Interface will be offering the world an authoritative product within 18 months.

Among the many buzz phrases being tossed around these days is policy-based computing. Windows network managers can be excused if they show a complacent grin when they hear that phrase since policy-based computing has been a part of Windows for a number of years. But the new thing, the new paradigm, if you will, is using policies to control and monitor your entire network.

Small Businesses Struggle

Small Businesses Struggle 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

In Les sons Learned the Hardest Way, by Going Belly-Up, Laura Randall profiles the experiences of 4 small businesses that have closed recently and offers this snippet of information:

New small businesses start every day, and fail just as frequently. About 34 percent of businesses with 500 or fewer employees close within two years of opening, and 50 percent fold after four years, according to the Small Business Administration.

Yep, my first personal business venture closed after only 6 months of start-up time... luckily, none of the founders lost too much money on the deal. I'd agree with the idea that it's tough to start your own business, and it's even tougher to make money at it, if you're not truly focused on every aspect of it.

Why Small Businesses should bl0g

Why Small Businesses should bl0g 08/03/2004 12:19 PM

In Small businesses and blogging, Church of the Customer discusses blogging options for small businesses, gives some examples of small business blogs, and provides a half-dozen reasons why a small business owner should write a blog:

  1. They fan the flames of customer evangelism. They help humanize you and your organization.
  2. They can function as an instant-feedback machine about your company and its products and services (because of the comments and trackback functions).
  3. They compel you to Napsterize more of your knowledge, which attracts prospects thanks to the search engines which index your ongoing knowledge automatically. Attraction is easier than hunting.
  4. The facilitate the spread of buzz if you’re honest, authentic and write your blog yourself.
  5. They allow you to have more conversations with customers and prospects than you could ever do in person.
  6. They help position you as a knowledgeable expert in your industry.

How Property Management Software Can

How Property Management Software Can
Help Make Filing Your Taxes Easier
03/14/2005 05:57 PM
Tax time can become very stressful for many real estate investors, it is a time when you need to get all your financials in order to present to the government for your yearly tax filings. Many investors try to manually work through their incomes and expenses on paper, going through numerous receipts, checks, etc. The job becomes very tedious and error prone, potentially leading to tax filing errors and the hence the dreaded tax audits. The good news is that there are better alternatives, mainly in the form of property management software. These software applications can really help speed up your tax filings, and not only that, they can also give you additional reports that can assist you in getting better returns from your investment properties.
