Why Sony Can't Create An iTunes For
Movies
Why Sony Can't Create An iTunes For
Movies
03/31/2005 07:20 AMAs if the content companies haven't already been making fools of
themselves with some recent strategic decisions, things are only going
to get worse. Sony is now saying that it wants to
create an
"iTunes for movies," saying it will "set business models, pricing
models, distribution models like (Apple chief Steve) Jobs did for
music, but for the film industry." First of all, that's simply not
going to happen. Sony is in the content business itself -- so its
competitors in the movie business probably aren't going to be
thrilled about contributing to its movie store. However, even if they
can set up business models, pricing models and distribution models
just like iTunes, they've totally missed the point. That, alone, is
not what made iTunes successful. It's the
customer experience.
Apple made the customer experience work. They made it easy. While
some of their decisions have been less than user friendly concerning
copy protection and the forced-iPod connection -- overall it's the
user experience that makes iTunes work. That means, for the most
part, not treating your customers like criminals. However, Sony's
entertainment execs have made it clear that
they
already view their customers as criminals and will do everything
they can to lock all their content down. Hell, just take a look at
Sony's widely disparaged
alread
y existing iTunes clone for music to see how copying the business
model isn't nearly enough.

Sony to create "iTunes for movies,"
release 500 films digitally within a
year
03/31/2005 11:46 PMXeni Jardin:
At
a
conference in Santa Monica today, Sony Pictures Digital
Entertainment SVP Michael Arrieta said:
"We want to set business models, pricing models, distribution models
like (Apple Computer CEO Steve) Jobs did for music, but for the film
industry," [said Arrieta], "I'm trying to create the new
'anti-Napster."
To that end, Arrieta said, his group plans to digitize Sony
Pictures' top 500 films and make them available for the first time in
various digital environments within the next year. He said the
distribution for films like "Spider-Man 2" will go beyond just
Movielink, the video-on-demand joint venture of Sony Pictures and
several other major studios, which to date has hosted a limited
library of Sony's movies.
For example, Sony plans to sell and make films available in flash
memory for mobile phones in the next year, Arrieta said. It also will
further develop its digital stores for downloading and owning films on
the PC, he said in an interview. Sony's plans--and similar moves by
other studios--are likely to avoid empowering any one technology
company--such as Apple in the music equation--and allow studios to
pocket more of the profits. The philosophy in Hollywood is "Define
your own agenda or someone else will for you."

Hurricane report from Q-Burns Abstract

Hurricane report from Q-Burns Abstract
Message
08/18/2004 12:23 PMFamed DJ and friend of BoingBoing Michael Donaldson, aka
QBurns Abstract
Message, had just returned from tour in Eastern Europe last week
when the hurricane hit his home in Florida. There's no electricity yet
in many places, but he's hiding out in his recording studio with a
dial-up connection and a hamster-powered laptop and e-mails us this
report. Image: snapshot of a frightened cat coming out of hiding a
couple days after the storm.
The winds here in Orlando were at about 90 MPH when it hit. The was a
lot of destruction, but somehow my house and property ended up
completely unscathed. The worst part lasted 45 minutes. I just sat in
the dark with my cat and a bottle of wine watching the whole thing out
the window. It was really crazy. Saw the trees flapping around and
then I kept seeing flashes of blue and green in the sky ... I thought
this was some strange lightning but found out later it was actually
electrical transformers exploding across the neighborhood. Wow.
I've been through at least 3 hurricanes in my life and have never seen
anything like this either. The city is like a warzone with debris and
fallen trees and power lines everywhere. It was starting to get
cleaned up as I left home yesterday, so hopefully when I return all
will be back to normal. I can't even imagine what it looks like down
south in the Ft. Meyers area, which received the full force of the
storm. It actually weakened a bit before it hit central Florida.
My business partner has a 30 foot tree laying in his backyard. Another
friend has a tree about that big in his swimming pool (no idea how
he'll get that out). Yet another friend lives in a neighborhood that
is in a 'dead end' road. A huge tree has fallen in the path of their
only exit, and they can only leave by foot. I guess I got off easy.
None of us have any power, though.
The storm was followed by eerie silence and the even eerier sight of
my neighborhood residents walking the lightless streets, Night Of The
Living Dead-style, surveying the damage. A friend of mine owned a bar
that miraculously had power so after a few phone calls we convened
there 90 minutes after the hurricane's end. About 60 people showed and
I started playing records and doing vodka shots. This had the makings
of a really nice party as a ton of frustration and stress was being
expelled by all. We were stopped at about 1 AM by a number of cops who
claimed the city was in a state of emergency and there was a curfew in
effect all over the city. We either left the party or we were to be
arrested. Thus we were ordered to tipsily navigate the darkened,
traffic light-less, wreckage covered streets to our hot, powerless,
and, in some cases, devastated homes. You think the 'man' would give
us a break.

Brief Abstract of Wikipedia's
Mesothelioma Cancer page
Brief Abstract of Wikipedia's
Mesothelioma Cancer page
06/26/2005 02:07 AMMesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated with
previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant (cancerous)
cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most
of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura
(outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in
the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium
(a sac that surrounds the heart).
Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they
inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and
fibre in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member
who worked with asbestos, or by home renovation using asbestos cement
products.
In the United States, the average mesothelioma-related settlement was
$1 million; for cases that go to trial awards averaged $6 million,
according to a study by the RAND Corporation. Only a small fraction of
the thousands of asbestos-related lawsuits in the United States every
year are related to mesothelioma. In 2004, a bill in the United States
Senate aimed a asbestos litigation reform failed to reach a floor
vote. In January of 2005, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen
Specter announced he would again try to pass an asbestos litigation
reform bill.
A separate bill introduced on March 17, 2005, the Fairness in Asbestos
Injury Resolution Act of 2005 (FAIR act of 2005), seeks to ensure a
set amount of compensation dependent on the symptoms of the victim.
The range is from Medical Monitoring for victims with Asbestosis or
Pleural Disease to $35,000 for victims with Mixed Disease With
Impairment all the way to over $1,000,000 for Mesothelioma victims and
nonsmoking Lung Cancer victims
