Code Red and Nimda requests are annoying at best, and can complicate log processing. One option of dealing with these requests is to have Apache log the requests to a separate log file, which can be processed as needed. Add...

“Networks, including the Internet and power grids, are complicated entities. They are made up of nodes — servers or power stations — that connect to greater or lesser degrees with other nodes, and they are susceptible to cascade failures, which occur when large, well-connected nodes abruptly disconnect from the network. A researcher from the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Germany has shown that it might be possible to suppress cascade…

Selective Webliography for Health Sciences Authors by Mark A. Spasser
http://www.istl.org /04-summer/internet.html

This selective webliography for health sciences authors is intended to gather together useful web-based resources that will facilitate the publication of professional materials. Authoring resources and tools are no exception. In fact, "lists" have been used since the beginning of literacy itself to order, reorganize, and store knowledge in a more useful, more 'logical', way (Goody 1977). It is important to remember that the web is loosely regulated and extremely fluid. Even resources from reputable publishers invariably come and go, depending on changing organizational missions and on who is charged with maintaining them. Information must be checked regularly for timeliness; while rules and procedures -- information -- change, sometimes web pages do not. All that being said, exercising a little common sense and considerable diligence, the web provides an unparalleled universe of high-quality resources literally at the fingertips of any enterprising health sciences author. This has been added to Healthcare Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This will be added to Healthcare Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide.

Blogging Behind the Firewall

"Our internal use of Weblogs has greatly accelerated, and we’re beginning to see more tangible benefits as we’ve begun to reach a critical mass of internal contributors....

Since then, my team has been using the blog-driven IT roadmap in weekly staff meetings as a platform to discuss the initiatives we have completed and to look ahead to new ones. Our meetings no longer have agendas or redundant handouts, because we don’t need them. Of course, some items have dropped off our master plan altogether, and new ones have been added, but the important point is that our master plan is always updated and readily available on our intranet, and any changes are distributed via RSS to anyone who wants to see them. Aside from the public Weblog, we maintain our own Weblog for more technical documentation, which has raised our level of internal documentation by several orders of magnitude already.

Our internal use of Weblogs doesn’t stop there. Software Engineer Kevin Varley has created “Varley’s Project Notes,” his own Weblog to keep notes on his development projects. Kevin makes inventive use of the comment functionality available in Movable Type. After outlining coding and debugging tasks in posts with titles such as “Taxonomy Terror,” Kevin uses the comments feature to make additional notes about how his initial assumptions ultimately played out.

Weblogs are not just for the hard-core techies. Our editorial staff recently started its own Weblog to share updated style guides, edit calendars, and other tools of the trade. I’m looking forward to seeing what unexpected points of leverage they achieve with their Weblog. It’s amazing how a system so simple and easy can produce such profound results." [InfoWorld, via Tomalak's Realm]

I hadn't thought to use the comments in this fashion, but it's a great idea. I think I'm going to set up my own personal blog for the next two months' worth of my projects for our upcoming merger.

Logging Off The Internet

Logging Off The Internet 01/23/2004 02:23 PM
Steve Cisler is getting some publicity for his decision to log off the internet for a while and drive around the country trying to figure out how people get by without the internet. While some of his friends think it's the equivalent of committing suicide, others say they envy him, as they're sick of being inundated with spam and adware and such. My guess is that he won't have that much trouble going offline. People spend a lot of time online because it's there, and it's very very useful for a lot of things, but I still don't think that too many people absolutely rely on the internet for being able to exist.

Logging the documentary

Logging the documentary 02/12/2004 12:51 PM

I'm happy to report that loggnig the documentary happens pretty much at live speed. I just run the tape and log as it goes. So 20 hours of tape means 20 hours of logging. Not too bad.

I created a table in Word. The first column has the timecode (0:25:41), the second the scene ("plane"), the third details ("old man looking"), the fourth comments ("nice image - bad sound"). I only use the comments for 1 out of every 5 rows, more or less. A 1 hour tape turns into about 2 pages in Word. I just run the video on the TV and type in my Word doc as it goes.

Zorn Whups Chicagoist’s Ass

“In the wee final moments of Thursday night, Chicagoist received an e-mail from Chicagoist's favorite professional blogger and columnist Mr. Eric Zorn.

The subject line: ‘whup ass report -- Nexis

Seems Chicagoist may have inadvertently overstated things yesterday when we said getting the phrase ‘can of whup-ass’ into the pages of the &lsq uo;stuffy and stodgy Tribune’ signaled a ‘hope for tomorrow,’ as Zorn uncovered at least four previous occasions when said phrase has appeared in the Trib. Using his trusty Lexis-Nexis, Zorn found the mentions and they go clear back into 2001.

While one Chicagoist staff member was heard to say that if Zorn wants to lend us the cash to get a subscription to Lexis-Nexis we'd be happy to check for such things, and while two of the references are found in the pages of Red Eye, Chicagoist knows when we've had our asses handed to us and we can admit it….” [Chicagoist]

I was going to leave a comment on the Chicagoist site to the effect that while they may not have access to Lexis-Nexis, they most certainly have access to a far wider range of materials that most definitely includes an archive of the Chicago Tribune, all for free, thanks to their local public library. Except that in this case, that local public library is the Chicago Public Library. In order to prove my point, I searched for a list of the databases to which they offer access. Guess what? No list. Just a link to “Chicago WebFeat Remote Authentication.” What on earth do you suppose is a WebFeat Remote Authentication, much less a Chicago one?

That’s when I realized that Chicagoist doesn’t know the answer to that question, either, and really, why should they? So to Chicagoist, trust me that your search would have gotten you what you needed if the page had been labeled something that made sense and provided any type of explanation or list at all. Bookmark that page, because there’s a wealth of information available to you from it (assuming that you have a library card, and I feel pretty confident that you do). And to CPL, rename that page ASAP and add a list of all of the databases available in order to highlight your assets, not hide them!
