10th Anniversary of
photo.net/philip.greenspun.com
01/07/2004 03:36 PMIt was 10 years ago this month that I began to build my personal
Web site, which eventually grew into photo.net and
philip.greenspun.com. In December 1993 hardly anyone cared about
the Internet or World Wide Web. Hal Abelson, one of our
professors, thought the Web was interesting. My friend Brian
LaMacchia got motivated to set up an HTTP daemon on our Unix file
server. Our classmate Jonathan Rees built a CGI library so that
we could write Web scripts in Scheme (a dialect of Lisp). I
began playing around in the hopes that I'd be able to write
collaborative networked computer applications without having to build
user interface code for every possible operating system. Zak
Kohane, a professor at Harvard Medical School and doctor at Children's
Hospital, taught me enough SQL that we could build a Web interface to
the Children's Oracle clinical care database. Nearly everyone to
whom we mentioned our little obsession said that we were wasting our
time and that nothing especially interesting was going to come out of
the Web protocols.
And now, after just 10 years, there are 30+ Internet cafes in
Ushuaia, Argentina, the capital of Tierra del Fuego and
the southernmost city in the world (54 degrees south
latitude)...

iTunes Celebrates First Anniversary
04/28/2004 10:25 AMiTunes has exceeded our wildest expectations during its first
year, charting a new direction for the music industry, said
Apple CEO Steve Jobs. In its first year, music fans have purchased
more than 70 million songs, making it the number one online music
service in the world with more than 70% market share of legal
downloads for singles and albums. iTunes customers are currently
purchasing 2.7 million songs per week, a rate of 140 million songs per
year. To kick off its second year, Apple today launched the third
generation iTunes Music Store, featuring the industrys largest
online music catalog of over 700,000 songs from all five major music
companies and over 450 independent music labels, as well as
groundbreaking new features. [Apr 28]

04/14/2004 02:21 PMNewburyOpen.Net, a commercial free community network, celebrates two
years of operation: The brainchild of Michael Oh, the network offers
free service subsidized by businesses that promote themselves through
the offering. Oh is also known for some of his stunts, like pulling up
a Wi-Fi equipped, Internet linked car in front of a Boston Starbucks.
The network is open in several senses, including offering these white
papers that describe how to create your own, similar network from
infrastructure to marketing. The idea that Oh started hasn't spread
too far yet: there are few other business areas offering the
marketing/advertising/Wi-Fi combination that NewburyOpen.Net is. But
the idea of free Wi-Fi in business districts, sometimes funded by
municipalities and associated businesses, is a meme that keeps
spreading....

Helsinki, May 5th 2004 -- The Midgard Open Source Community celebrates
the
5th anniversary of the Content Management Framework project. Midgard
1.0.0
was launched in May 8th 1999 by Jukka Zitting and Henri Bergius.
There will be a Midgard developer meeting in Poznan, Poland on May 8th
2004 to celebrate the anniversary. However, as the members of the
Midgard Project are spread internationally it is impossible for many
to participate. Instead, everybody can raise a beer glass on Saturday
for Midgard and the community that made it possible.A special "5th
anniversary" shirt is available in the Midgard CafePress store, thanks
to Tony Lee.The original Midgard 1.x code base is starting to show
age, and the developer meeting will host debate on the future
strategy, code named Ragnaroek. People unable to participate are
welcomed to join the discussions on the developer mailing list and
Midgard IRC channel.
About MidgardMidgard is an Open Source Content Management System
integrating world's most popular Open Source web development tools —
MySQL, Apache and PHP — providing an environment for deploying
powerful Internet based content management solutions. The Midgard
environment includes a component framework and several web-based
authoring and administration tools. Midgard has an install base of
thousands and powers solutions ranging from simple organizational
websites to huge eGovernment portals.

Arabeyes celebrates third anniversary
with IRC 'evolution' party
07/29/2004 08:21 AMThe date is 7/29, 1200 - 2359 UTC. The place is irc.freenode.net,
#arabeyes. Arabeyes is self-described as "a Meta project that is aimed
at fully supporting the Arabic language in the Unix/Linux
environment." Since Arabeyes began, there have been several Arabic
Linux distributions released, KDE has become usable in Arabic, plenty
of work has been done on Mozilla and OpenOffice.org, and Linux has
started to become recognized as a useful operating system in
Arabic-speaking countries, at least among the geek-cognoscenti crowd.
This year's IRC event celebrates all this. 17 guest "speakers" are
scheduled, and you may want to drop in and meet one or more of them
even if you don't speak Arabic; Linux and open source transcend
linguistic, cultural, and geographic boundaries, and it's good to
support advocacy efforts no matter what language or country they're
in.

01/05/2005 04:34 AMNetBSD is widely known as the most portable operating system in the
world. It currently supports 52 system architectures, all from a
single source tree, and is always being ported to more. NetBSD 2.0
continues the long tradition with major improvements in file system
and memory management performance, significant security enhancements,
and support for many new platforms and peripherals. To celebrate the
release, we've asked several well-known NetBSD developers to comment
on some of NetBSD 2.0's new features.
