Apocalyptic Focusing on the epiphanic quality of apocalyptic
insight, Dark draws on the wisdom of popular culture-including
The
Simpsons,
Beck, and
Coen brothers' films-to expose
the "moral bankruptcy of our imaginations."

But everyday is Halloween!
But everyday is Halloween!

David Pescovitz:
An idiotic principal at a middle school in Kansas is cracking down on
goths, sending them home if they dress in a way that may "disrupt the
school environment or impede learning in the classroom." Principal
Cherle Crain's quotes in this MTV.com article are amazingly asinine.
Here's my favorite:
"Last week, a parent told me her two
kids were talking about this at dinner," Crain said. "And one of them
said 'I'm so glad Ms. Crain did this, because a Goth sat behind me
last year and every single day he'd hiss at me like a snake.' And that
impeded his learning."

Everyday is Monday
Everyday is Monday
02/01/2005 10:11 PM
I had a week of Mondays last week and Friday had an added bonus of
being both Friday and Monday at the same time due to the holiday on
Thursday. From Monday onward, I seemed to fumble everything from the
complex to the simple. I patched the system a bunch of the CPAN sites
run on, as well as this blog, only to have it come up perfectly but be
unable to log in to the system because sshd decided it didn't want to
run so I have to wait until Ben can get to the console and start it
for me, hopefully soon. I spent the weekend away from computers to try
and change my system karma. :)
I've scanned all the pictures from Tunisia and have been sifting
through them and whenever sshd comes back online, I'll put them up on
the system.
Blogs in our everyday lives
Blogs in our everyday lives
04/23/2004 01:25 PMToday my Oregon State Primary voter guide arrived and totally blew me
away. It's funny how these silly things have gone from a diversion
for web designers into a tool to help shape elections.
Also, I love that there's a bonus "b" in the term "web blogs."

PHPlist: Not your everyday Mailman
08/27/2004 01:37 PMLike many (if not most) open source developers, I use Mailman, the GNU
mailing list manager, for all of my newsletter requirements. Recently,
however, I began playing with a different one-way announcement-type
newsletter mailer. It's called PHPlist, and as you might guess, in
contrast to Mailman, it's not Python powered. Beyond the language
difference, it adds a number of useful default features, including
email from RSS feeds and sophisticated user management that really
extends the power of an announcement-based mailing list.
"Everyday Hackers" in the Boston Globe
"Everyday Hackers" in the Boston Globe
04/19/2004 12:24 PM
A Boston Globe article,
"Everyday Hackers" by Robert Gavin, talks about the
phenomenon of bringing hacks home to the citizen engineer. The article
is nice enough to weave into the story the O'Reilly
Hacks series I spend much time
on, our new
Hacking Projects for
Geeks series, Paul Graham's
"Hackers & Painters",
and
Ready Made magazine.
Today, a growing hacker culture is not only reclaiming the original
meaning of the term but also applying its can-do ethic far beyond
computer code to embrace everything from home electronics to home
improvements. Just as the first hackers looked at behemothcomputers
and rudimentary programs and insisted, "We can make them better," so
are modern-day hackers looking at a wide variety of products,
services, and materials and saying, "We can make these better,
too."
...
Said Dornfest: "The difference between a hacker and consumer is a
consumer says, 'I wish it would work this way.' A hacker says, `I've
got a screwdriver and a few minutes.'"

New "everyday neuroscience" book from

01/16/2004 11:35 AMSteven Johnson, the guy who wrote the brilliant
Emergence (a book whose lyrical description of
emergent phenomena in ant-colonies inspired both my forthcoming
novella Human Readable and the ants that crawl over Appeals Court, the
sequel Charlie Stross and I wrote to
Jury Service, which will be
published as a fix-up novel by
Argosy
in just a couple weeks), has a new book out:
Mind Wide Open: Your Brain And The Neuroscience Of
Everyday Life, which he describes as:
...an attempt to look systematically at the question of what brain
science can tell you about yourself as an individual. There are a
number of great books that ask questions like: How did the brain
evolve? Or: how does the brain work? This book asks a related, but
more intimate question: how does your brain work? In what ways can
science shed light on your own personality traits, emotional habits,
mental blindspots or strengths? In the book I've set myself up as a
kind of guinea pig for this experiment: I take a number of tests that
evaluate different cognitive faculties; I do a number of explorations
with neurofeedback; I help design a series of fMRI experiments on my
own head. I also have conversations with some of the world's leading
brain scientists, who function as guides through this amazing inner
landscape.

03/19/2005 02:22 AMOver the past week I have been really sick with the Flu, my doctor
sent me home for 3 days bed rest, and yet I felt I needed to complete
my podcast in the middle of being absolutely miserable. I will
probably someday listen to those 2 shows and say what was I
thinking.
With that being said I knew the shows were about 50% of were they
should be quality wise and the perfectionist in me said don't release
them, but hey I said their are thousands of people out their counting
on my show to come out Tuesday and Friday mornings so no mater what I
better get myself behind the Mic and do a podcast.
Is it worth it, I say absolutely, I received over 200 e-mail's from
listeners wishing me well, and you know that is powerful in it's own
way.
This morning I received a particular nice e-mail from a
listener/reader who just happens to be a Mac user, heck even I can say
that I am a mac user, the old habits die hard and I temper that with,
I use both operating systems with equal pleasure.
This note made me realize that people are starting to get to know
Todd the Geek here at Geek News Central. It has become apparently
obvious to me that not only is the weblog important but as equally
important is getting all of you to know me better, and I think thru
the Podcast that is happening. But for the special
person out there today that made my day, Thank you I really
appreciated it.
Never fear though I will be back in prime form on Tuesday with more
personal highlights and stimulating news commentary. Back to the
normal record and post no more editing out coughing and all that other
nasty stuff..
