New AOL Service Eliminates Passwords
09/21/2004 12:54 PMFor some AOL users, passwords have just become the computing
dinosaurs. America Online has partnered with RSA Security to create
AOL PassCode, a premium service that secures and manages AOL
ScreenNames. AOL PassCode utilizes RSA's SecurID two-factor
authentication scheme where a random six-digit numeric code is
generated in intervals of 60 seconds from a keychain sized device. AOL
claims that this added safeguard provides a second level of account
protection. The service is primarily directed toward small business
and customers who pay bills and manage funds online. PassCode costs an
additional $1.95 USD a month with a one-time service fee of $9.95 USD.

Asiva JPEG Deblocker eliminates pixel
blocks
09/23/2004 06:07 PMShapiro Consulting Group Inc. has announced the release of Asiva JPEG
Deblocker, a US$49 plug-in compatible with Adobe Photoshop versions
5.5 through CS. It supports 8- or 16-bit RGB or CMYK files and uses an
algorithm that attempts to preserve as much detail as possible in a
picture before the use of filters or other color corrections that may
bring out previously hidden pixel blocks. Asiva JPEG Deblocker
smoothes out the pixel blocks in low saturation, brightly lit areas
and preserves the color information everywhere else in the image,
keeping those blocks from appearing during subsequent changes. Shapiro
recommends using it on a JPEG file before performing other
operations.

“Continuing its history of technology leadership and industry

AP200 Access Point with Dual Speed WLAN technology, which delivers
maximum performance for any client on a hybrid wireless LAN
(WLAN).” This unit eliminates the “speed penalty”
that Wi-Fi networks encounter when using mixed 802.11b/g clients. That
makes upgrading easier, as you can do it piece by piece. Myself, I
just bit the bullet and did it…
Reactionary school-boards' block-buy
eliminates sex from text-books
Reactionary school-boards' block-buy
eliminates sex from text-books
03/26/2005 05:13 AMCory Doctorow:
Southern school board buy their textbooks in a block, lead by the
purchase decisions of Texas's board. "Liberal" school boards make
individual purchase decisions. That means that reactionary anti-sex-ed
and anti-evolution agendas dominate the editorial decisions at
textbook publishers, which has led to the elimination sex-ed from
every current health text in America and will shortly do in evolution
as well.
There is a substantial buying bloc--namely, school boards in southern
states--that follows suit with whatever the state school board of
Texas does. These states buy textbooks uniformly, statewide. Most
"blue states" buy district to district, so there is no unified bloc
per se to counterbalance the southern states where points of politics
are concerned. So this bloc of southern school boards has an
unrivalled power to influence the choices of the major textbook
publishers in the country--of which there are only like four, anyhow.
Basically, they don't publish anything the school board of Texas
doesn't buy.
You can see where this headed, but it's already shockingly total.
Right now, a sex ed textbook that isn't "abstinence only" cannot be
bought in the United States. Not a current one, not from any major
publisher. There are inroads against evolution as well, but sex ed has
basically been exterminated.
