Computers That Jam

Computers That Jam 08/17/2004 01:29 PM
While many musical purists dislike electronic music for a variety of reasons, one big thing is the "programmed" feel to it. However, the latest software is trying something different: it will let the computer jam with a real musician. The software takes the music the live musician plays, and tries to riff off what's actually being played. It's not clear how good it is, but realizing that computers are only getting faster, it's only going to get better. Some will still question how well a piece of software will be able to improvise compared to human musicians, but it may not be long before your favorite jam band adds in some computerized solos.

All Your Computers Are Belong to Us

All Your Computers Are Belong to Us 12/19/2004 03:12 PM

Susan Crawford's provocative blog post about the broadcast flag brief recently filed by the FCC and Justice Department just got
Slashdotted .

The issue is whether the FCC has legal authority to mandate that manufacturers of digital television receivers incorporate "broadcast flag" technology to limit copying of digital content. As Susan points out, the government's position in court is quite expansive. The FCC is essentially claiming the authority to regulate any device that incorporates certain communications capabiliites, which includes a huge segment of the computer industry.

I'm actally working on a paper looking at the FCC's regulation of computers. It turns out that, contrary to popular belief, the FCC has been regulating computers for decades. The rhetoric about "keeping the government's hands off the Internet" is overblown. But the broadcast flag represents a dangerous exansion of government involvement in computer hardware markets. The important question isn't whether the FCC is involved in the computer industry, but why and how.

Mainframes are computers too

Mainframes are computers too 04/16/2004 05:05 AM

A picture named apple.jpgI was talking up the Person al TV Networks idea last night with Jim Moore. He asked what they are. Well, they don't exist yet. But think about mainframe computers, centralized beasts, controlled and owned big faceless corporations, and how all hell broke loose when people could by a personal computer for a couple of thousand dollars. Same idea. More and more, the media is owned by big faceless companies who can be manipulated by the government. Blogs are great, they're like personal magazines. This is no longer a vision, it's reality. So if you want to publish an idea, go ahead. You don't need to sell it to a publisher. The next step, which we're on the cusp of, is video production and distribution using RSS and BitTorrent, and perhaps other P2P methods. Adam Curry, who began his television career working for one of the behemoths, has become the visionary for the personal television network of the future. Of course that's one of the BloggerCon sessions tomorrow afternoon at 1:30PM, Pound 200.
