Tart cards: illicit ads from London,
chronicled in new book
12/08/2003 02:20 PM
A fine stocking stuffer idea for literate, wired pervs. On sale for under $20. Warning: do not confuse tart cards with tarot cards. Any attempt to read your future with tart cards may bring about truly hazardous results.

"This amusing, enlightening, and beautifully designed book explains the history and graphic/technical development of tart cards with over 400 examples in color. Tart cards are the means by which providers of sexual services advertise in London, and they have become as ubiquitous a symbol of that city as the red telephone boxes where they are found. The book also contains an eye-opening, comprehensive glossary of the suggestive and coded language they use. 128 pages, trade paperback."

Will the election be compromised by
Technology?

Will the election be compromised by
Technology?
09/01/2004 04:25 AM

I am very political and yet I try not to mix politics and technology, the topics just don't mix. Over the past 6 months or so I have watched the drama unfold surrounding the Diebold voting machines. I vote via absentee ballet and I am not worried about the accuracy of my vote, but I am concerned that the 1000's of machines out their could be targeted by Hackers and Activist who wish to disrupt and manipulate such machines. Being they can literally be hijacked in several seconds I wonder if they machines will be targeted?

Municipalities and States that own these machines need to have the balls to stand up and say hey we have a broken system lets fix it. As in all government contracts it's simply boils down to dollars. Local governments have laid out millions of tax payer dollars to automate the voting process and most are to scared to admit they have a problem.

I have a solution. My Grandmother who is 93 years old and my Mother (age not divulged) have worked in our district to count votes when we did it the old fashioned way on paper. What is so wrong with paper when the technology behind diebold voting machines has been proven not to be secure. Sure you may have a few spoiled ballots because someone forgot their glasses or did not take the time to read the instructions. Voting technology is only as good as the programmer that designed it. But one thing is for sure it does not take a programmer to design a voting ballot and there is no chance anyone is going to be able to hack it. [Dan Gillmor]

Kids' craphoundery compromised by

Kids' craphoundery compromised by
commercialism
01/02/2004 05:58 AM
Fiona Romeo writes about a BBC program about children and collecting, and the way that the commercialization of collectibles has changed the experience of collecting for kids.
Finkel argued that the commercialisation of collecting, through products like Pokémon cards, has devalued the experience: "What's really exciting about collecting is looking for things that you can't find when you want them. All you need to find [mass market collectibles] is the money. The real thrill is lost."

And, that these products might be branded as 'limited edition' or 'rare' but this is manipulated rather than spontaneous. I noticed this recently in Forbidden Planet, which has lucky-dip style vending machines for pocket-money priced toys, and trading cards on the counter. Reading both the pitches and disclaimers reminded me more of gambling than collecting.

Founded in April 1989 by eleven companies, the Object Management Group™ (OMG™) began independent operations as a not-for-profit corporation. Through the OMG's commitment to developing technically excellent, commercially viable and vendor independent specifications for the software industry, the consortium now includes approximately 800 members. The OMG is moving forward in establishing the Model Driven Architecture ™ as the "Architecture of Choice for a Connected World" ™ through its worldwide standard specifications including CORBA ®, CORBA/IIOP™, the UML™, XMI™, MOF™, Object Services, Internet Facilities and Domain Interface specifications. The OMG is headquartered in Needham, MA, USA with a subsidiary in Japan. The OMG has international marketing offices in Bahrain, Brazil, Germany, India and the UK, along with a government representative in Washington, D.C.

The OMG was formed to create a component-based software marketplace by accelerating the introduction of standardized object software. The organization's charter includes the establishment of industry guidelines and detailed object management specifications to provide a common framework for application development. Conformance to these specifications will make it possible to develop a heterogeneous computing environment across all major hardware platforms and operating systems. Implementations of OMG specifications can be found on many operating systems across the world today.

The OMG's series of specifications detail the necessary standard interfaces for Distributed Object Computing. Its widely popular Internet protocol IIOP (Internet Inter-ORB Protocol) is being used as the infrastructure for hundreds of technology companies. OMG specifications are used worldwide to develop and deploy distributed applications for vertical markets, including Manufacturing, Finance, Telecoms, Electronic Commerce, Real-time systems and Health Care.

Tricks of the Trade

Tricks of the Trade 08/27/2004 01:33 PM

The Morning News has a fun article on "tricks of the trade": documenting little tricks used in various professions. Great stuff.

This year, for instance, a programmer can always tack the phrase "and I'm thinking of incorporating some XML functionality" onto a project summary to explain why he'll need an extra week, account for a missed deadline, or impress a superior. In this respect, the gap between software engineers and birthday clowns is almost negligible.

Lieberman on trade

Lieberman on trade 01/07/2004 02:40 PM
So I've taped but not yet watched the Democrats' debate yesterday, but thanks to Jim Garrison for pointing me to this exchange. According to this Washington Post transcript, Lieberman had this to say about trade:
I think we've got to reject the extremism of George Bush and the extremism of Democrats who would put back walls of protectionism. And what's the extremism of George Bush? He just sits back and lets foreign countries break the rules of trade, rip off patents, copyrights, take American jobs, play with the currency.
Now I too am one of those rare free-trade Democrats, and one of those not so rare critics of the President. But letting "foreign countries" "rip off patents, copyrights" is not one of things one might criticize this President for. The USTR has been brutal in forcing nation after nation into more stringent bilateral agreements with the US to strengthen the protection of IP. There is, of course, something that you could criticize the President for -- farm subsidies -- though not if you're running for President in Iowa (General Clark?). Here again, Lieberman was the only one to mention subsidies. His words: "So yes to subsidies as they are now, and yes to trade."

RepCheck™
http://www.repcheck.com/

Los Angeles-based RepCheck™ is the most comprehensive source of information regarding the opportunities and risks of interacting with any individual…..anywhere. Established in February 2000 RepCheck employs an interactive and searchable database of reputation files - RepReports™ - which allows the public to post and view information regarding the personal reputations of themselves and others. Those postings are then transformed, via a rating scheme that weighs the credibility of the source, into a numeric indicator of overall reputation - RepScore™.

The system, initially conceived out of the founder's frustration at not being able to quickly access information regarding the reputations of individuals in his business and personal life, features a patented technology designed to mimic the actual process that most people go through in the formation of opinions and value judgments. Opinions of those on your "Trustee List" - those people whose opinions are most meaningful to you - are more heavily weighted in the final RepScore calculation. Additionally, RepScore factors in all other scorers' credibility, based on their RepScore and their history of postings to the RepReports of other individuals.
